I could hear the tonal pattern and pitches dead clear IN MY HEAD, but as soon as I tried to render it into vocals, I didn't know HOW to do it - therefore it APPEARED as if I was tone deaf.

So the next time you discover a singer that you would pronounce as "tone deaf," think again. They probably just don't know how to use their voice.

Singers Must Learn Correct Posture

The correct posture is fundamental for every singer who wants to be taken seriously. Realize that when you sing, your voice originates from your body, which is the ultimate source of the voice. Singers must always think of the way they inhale and exhale, keeping an upright posture with relaxed shoulders, and they must connect to the audience through eye contact.

To become a good singer, you must have good posture. When a vocalist starts to sing, the stance and the location of the feet with the way the knees are placed is very important for proper sound production. Also, if the posture of the chest and shoulders are correct this will enhance the voice while singing.

Posture and breathing support are dependent on each other, so voice students should be made aware of the significance. Voice instructors tell their students to stand up straight so that they stretch out their spine and lower the chin as if to tuck it in. By doing this they will make room for air to flow through their lungs more readily as they inhale and exhale.

Poor posture encourages back pain and tension and it could spread from the neck to the shoulders and to the back if the person is not completely relaxed. Keep in mind that the vocal cords are in the neck. So if the vocal cords are tense, it will hard to sing well with expression during a performance.

What about the role of the spine when you are ready to sing? If the spine is stretched out correctly with the singer leaning forward, it will help the diaphragm support the voice. With good posture, singers look more self-assured and give the audience the impression that they are good.

How should you stand while you perform in front of an audience? Try to stand with each foot firmly on the floor. Make sure each knee is not straightened as this can create problems with balance and can even disrupt air flow. Your feet will help ground you and work with your good posture as you perform.

When someone is standing with an upright spine with shoulders held back, they look as if they are in charge and very confident. If the singer locks the knees it could create some problems with muscle tension and even breath control. It might help a beginning singer to look into the mirror occasionally to check on the correct stance when preparing to sing.

Remember that the voice is an extension of the body as you use it to express how you feel and think. And when you perform, it is doubly important because how you hold yourself and your spine will help you look like you really are a performer. Posture and breath support do work together, and will help you sound like a singer if you practice regularly.

1. Have your child make a drawing or select one from your collection. Some children go through drawing phases, where they will constantly draw the same character, such as a mermaid or a dinosaur. These drawings are great for remembering these times. For special occasions such as your child's birthday, you can choose their favorite animal or character.

2. Select and lay out the material for the soft toy. You can use or re-use any material, such as leftover scraps, an old blanket, table cloth, linen, an old favorite piece of clothing, etc. The softer the fabric, the softer the plush toy will feel. Kids are enticed with bright hues so use "pick-me-up" colors such as yellow, red, pink, green, blue, and so on. If you use felt, there is no need to hem edges. The important thing is to keep shapes simple and to find the right materials to help lend character to your creation. 3. Trace your child's drawing onto the tracing paper, or redraw your child's drawing to a larger scale if desired. Put aside your child's drawing, and use the tracing paper drawing as your pattern.

4. Transfer the pattern to the fabric, cut out and sew the pieces together, right sides together. Leave a gap in the seam to flip it inside out and then stuff with fiberfill. The more you stuff the better. After stuffing, sew the gap closed.

5. The stuffed toy is now ready for you to sew on the eyes, mouth, nose and any other details that were drawn by your child. You may use buttons, colorful sequins, rhinestones, beads, etc. You can also embroider the details using thin wool or embroidery floss.

6. If you would like to further personalize the doll, you can add a little photo on the doll. You can paste the photo on a separate fabric and frame it using ribbons or fabric scraps before sewing it on the doll. If you are good at embroidering, you can embroider your child's name on the doll. Another good idea is to embroider a message on the doll. Sew "I love (your kid's name)" on the doll's body and see your kid's face instantly light up!

Overexposed Images and Photoshop

With Photoshop you have the ability to fix almost any flaw at the tips of your fingers. Overexposed photos are no exception. The simplest way to correct this is to open the photo in Photoshop and select Image> Adjustments> Shadow/Highlight (this is for CS-only, for pre-CS look below). You will notice an immediate and probably extreme change in your photo, but just use this setting as a starting point. Photoshop default settings are often way over the top. Simply adjust the Amount Slider and the Tonal Width Slider in both the Shadows and the Highlights until you find just the right balance. That's all there is to it!

Fixing Overexposed Photos, Pre-CS - The Layer Sandwich Trick If you don't have CS, then this trick will help you accomplish similar results.

Step 1 - New Layer Open your photo and make a copy of the Background Layer by selecting Layer> Duplicate Layer, or by dragging it to the New Layer Icon at the bottom of the Layers palette.

Step 2 - Change the Blend Mode From the Layers palette change the Blend Mode of the new layer from Normal to Multiply. This will darken the photo uniformly.

Step 3 - Repeat Now repeat the entire process again. Create a new layer, change the blend mode to multiply, and watch the result. Continue doing this over and over until you go from "it's almost just right" to "it's awful!"

Step 4 - Lower the Opacity Now leave the last layer active even though it is much too extreme and lower the Opacity using the slider at the top right of the layers palette. This lowers the strength of the effect. Once you have found the right amount, you can flatten your image.

Step 5 - Flatten And Save Choose Layer> Flatten or use the palette's flyout menu and choose Flatten Image. Now you are done! Don't forget to save your file (File> Save).

The world is a dangerous place and one of the most dangerous places is the television room. You see, television made my house collapse.

I was watching one of those renovations shows on television: Someone buys this little bungalow for a song then spends some money and some elbow grease renovating it. Then he or she sells the place for a huge amount of money. It looked so easy: Within an hour, the house is purchased, gutted and back on the market with nary a splinter or banged thumb. How hard can flipping houses?

Well, I'm no dummy. I know there is a lot you don't see on those shows. You don't see how long a project actually takes in terms of work hours. There are whole teams of people coming in on the shows, in some cases round the clock. Plus they are professionals who know every little trick to save time and money.

I also know that these shows don't show you everything that happens during the project. Sure, you see them taking the first swing of the hammer and the strain of moving out the heavy furniture. But they don't show you how they accidentally broke the china cabinet. Or how the "burnt sienna" paint looked closer to "hunter orange" on the wall.

They also don't tell you that the person doing the flipping has been doing this for 20 years or more and knows how to do every task in the project. Or that he has friends who can do the parts he is less familiar with. Or that the show's staff has all the connections needed to make the project sail swimmingly along.

No. They don't tell you all that. They make it all look so easy. And at the end, the family stands at the end, all smiling and happy. They don't tell you about the arguments that took place when the wife found her kitchen all torn apart. Or when she was told it would take "a little extra time" to fix it.

Well, I'm telling you about all these things now. So you don't have to go through what I did. I was watching one of those shows and I thought, "Well, if they gut a whole house. I sure can expand our kitchen a bit."

I had always thought that by removing the wall between the kitchen and dining room, the whole area would be so much more open. I thought it would be a big surprise for my wife. So one weekend, when she was out with the girls, I got started.

I took a sledge hammer and took out that wall.

Another thing they didn't mention on those shows: Taking out load bearing walls can make the house collapse. I'm telling you now.

And that's how television can make your house collapse.

This has caused belly dancing to lose its standing because of the lack of a standard choreography associated with the dance.

Uniquely Awesome Piano Covers

Having been in the piano cover business for several years, I have had the opportunity to listen to and help produce covers of some very odd types. Most of the crazier ideas come from people wishing to cover something not related to a piano but there have been some great requests for pianos as well. I thought it might be interesting to write some of those ideas down to get people thinking about other great ways to reinvent piano covers.

Dog House Cover. A woman in Wisconsin called and asked if we could make a custom fitted, waterproof cover that could fit the specifications of her dog house. She and her husband were having a disagreement about their ability to keep their dog as an inside dog because of the damage the dog had done in recent weeks to their belongings when they were both at work during the day. The solution was to leave the dog outside all day but she was concerned about the winter weather (both cold and rain) and wanted us to make a cover that would enclose her dog house. We were able to talk her out of it and to get her to upgrade her dog house to one that is more weather appropriate and we did not hear back from them again.

Logos of Your Favorite Team. Piano Covers are great places for team logos and over the years we have received quite a few requests to bring your favorite team right into your living room. We can place team logos directly above the piano keys, on the side panel, or, my personal favorite, right on the top of the cover in the middle of the piano. The logos are relatively easy to have come out looking great because it is easy to get such great artwork. Sometimes we get asked to do some odd tasks like dyeing the complete cover the same color as the logo. To accommodate those requests we have dyed piano covers white and red, yellow and maize and even gold and green.

Match the Decor of a House. The number one reason people ask for a non-traditional piano cover is that they want to match the decor of a part of their house. There are no budget issues for these clients, they just want to get a piano cover that exactly matches their environment. I have worked with green and pink, some family plaids that were pretty cool, some great designs for very hip music rooms and of course, had the requests to match a piece of furniture.

Place a picture on the piano cover of a loved one who has passed. This request has come up a handful of times over the last several years. Technology for photos has advanced to the point where a picture can be taken and blown up to fit on a piano cover. The image then is woven right into the fabric. Each time you place a drink on the piano, your aunt will be looking at you to keep you in line. Hopefully she is laughing as she does it.

We can accommodate special requests but the customers need to remember that these custom piano covers take additional and many times will cost five to eight times the cost of a traditional piano cover. Personally, I am partial to a traditional black or brown vinyl cover, but I have never been considered a trendy kind of guy.

Getting to grips with Digital Photography

There are certain features on modern digital cameras that you can live without. Two closely related features in that category are digital zoom and interpolated resolution. Both rely on the same principle, and it is definitely something better left to the editing software on your computer. When on the subject of digital cameras, interpolation is just a term for a computer's best guess as to what should happen when you try to turn one large pixel into more than one smaller pixels. The computer (whether it's your home PC, a dedicated graphics machine at a photo lab, or the chip in your camera) uses mathematical formulas that try to guess, based on the colors of surrounding pixels, what the new substitute pixels should look like. For example, if a series of black pixels in a line on a white background are doubled, the pixels added between the black pixels will be black, and those between the white pixels will be white.

You can use your photo editing software or even many picture viewers or dedicated programs, to view and copy EXIF data. It can also be used by specialized software provided by the camera manufacturer when loading pictures into your computer to record information about camera settings and even provide editing options. One of the things these transfer programs can do is to change the timestamp of the newly created file to match the time the photo was taken. That's another good reason to set the clock on your camera to the correct time. This data can be used to record a log of photographs for a variety of purposes. The time a favored shot was taken may be referred to later in duplicating light conditions. You can keep track of settings for experimenting with changes in settings, and never get your pictures mixed up because the data is stored as part of the file itself. You can export or copy the EXIF information and not have to manually enter information in your log.

What is it that is actually capturing the image? Where film cameras have a roll of film exposed behind the aperture, digital cameras have a sensor. Most digital cameras use an array of photo sensors under a filter matrix which results in the sensors each recording red (8-12 bit), green (8-12 bit) or blue (8-12 bit) light intensities. These separate sensors or channels create what is often referred to as the Bayer matrix pattern where every other sensor records green with the alternating cells recording in red or blue. Each pixel in a conventional sensor only captures one color. This data is typically 10 or 12 bits per pixel, with 12 bits per pixel currently being most common. Most cameras now provide the option to instantaneously store the captured material in a RAW file while alternatively the camera's processor can weave the RAW data using all three color channels to provide an instant 24 bit full-color JPEG or TIFF display image. RAW is not an abbreviation but literally means "raw" or "unprocessed". A RAW data file contains the original image information as it comes off the sensor before in-camera processing so you have a variety of choices in processing the data on your PC using one of many editing software programs available.

Analog or film cameras use the term ASA speed, however it is important to remember that a single digital camera can capture and store images at several ISO speeds. Amplifying the image signal in a camera can also amplify noise and thereby higher ISO speeds may produce progressively more noise in the photo. The character of an image in a photo can also change noise. Where lighter areas in analog or film photos tend to have the most noise, it is the darker areas of digital photographs that have the largest amount of noise. Digital cameras produce three types of noise called random noise, fixed pattern noise and banding noise. Random noise describes the abnormal intensity of color fluctuations compared to the rest of the photograph. It is most influenced by the ISO speed however the pattern of random noise may change even if exposure settings remain the same. Random noise may be the least objectionable, but the most difficult to remove where the noise is too often mistaken for true image characteristics. Fixed Hot pixels or fixed pattern noise describe pixel intensity that far exceeds that of ambient random noise fluctuations.

You can create beautiful special effects that will really make your digital photo stand out in a crowd, too. As you can image, the tools to create the perfect picture can cost a lot of money, if you have to purchase them. If you are on a budget, or just like to save money, anything you can find for free is a bonus! Well, there are free photo editors out there, you just have to look for them. Since the introduction of the Internet, there are literally thousands upon thousands of pages of information that are geared specifically toward helping you achieve the pictures of your dreams. You don't have to spend one penny to edit your photographs. All you need is access to a computer and scanner and you are well on your way. Just log onto any one of the number of free photo editor applications available and a whole new world of editing possibilities will be right at your fingertips. Don't let your money, or lack of, keep you from making the best pictures, just download some freeware and start editing your own pictures!

As it turns out, there are a few times when such a feature is quite handy. While it can be handy to have dedicated lighting, or even a slave flash unit linked to your camera, there are good reasons why such items do not come standard with most cameras. Fill flash (also known as "forced on" or "anytime" flash) is a feature found on most digital cameras that allows the user to trigger the built-in flash whenever a picture is taken - no matter the light level. This is handy when natural light is behind the subject, but also to fill in shadows anywhere in the frame. While your eye can see the detail in these shaded areas, often the camera cannot. Many outdoor pictures are spoiled by excessive shadow or loss of detail when natural light seems adequate to the eye.

Memory Sticks are used only in Sony products, and Sony is serious about keeping the technology in use. Unfortunately it seems like no one else is. They're available up to 4 Gigabytes in capacity, have good speed, but if you're using a Memory stick, it's probably because you're using a Sony camera and you don't have a choice. The newest common storage media are xD-Picture cards. Developed by Olympus and Fuji as a replacement for the older Smart Media cards, xD cards are compact and durable, with a heftier shell than older designs. They are stable in the market and likely to be around for a while, but they are gaining neither market share nor size rapidly - currently the largest xD cards are 1 Gigabyte. This is probably because only Olympus and Fuji now use this standard. Wide and wafer-thin, Smart Media cards define "legacy technology." Available only as large as 128 Megabytes, this is one technology I would have expected to have been "voted off the island" by now. Alas, they were used in tens if not hundreds of millions of cameras and smart phones, so they are still being made and will be available for some time. You won't find them in any new cameras, however.

Digital Photography: Your key to success

Why modify this digital camera setting? Experiments in exposure time can produce dramatic effects. For example: Take a photograph of a roaring waterfall in a well-lit area and adjust your digital camera's exposure speed to take pictures as quickly as possible. In great lighting, and with some modern digital cameras, you may be able to see the individual drops of water falling!

Most higher-end digital cameras support a histogram feature that can be displayed before or after you take a photo. Though it looks like a complex chart, a histogram is merely a representation of an image's brightness, and whether or not it has rich shadow and highlight areas. Without going into science or a lot of details, here's how you can use your histogram while taking pictures. If the histogram is weighted towards the left side with vary little if any curvature near the right, your photo will most likely be underexposed (too dark). Use your exposure compensation tool to brighten the image. Consider a slower shutter speed to allow more light to enter the camera lens. Note that there are exceptions. Are you taking photos of fireworks in a night sky? Since most of the picture will be dark your histogram should naturally be weighted towards the left.

If you are out and about in everyday life with your camera and there is a picture that you absolutely cannot miss but you don't have a tripod, what do you do? Obviously you can't carry your tripod everywhere you go: Change the ISO film sensitivity to allow your digital camera to take pictures with shorter exposure times. This can result in grainier images, so you'll need to experiment. Refer to your camera manual for details. Use your digital camera's portrait mode to reduce camera shake. Set your camera to take a picture 2 or 10 seconds after holding and releasing the shutter button, and you'll eliminate camera shake that would have normally resulted. Just remember to keep the camera as still as possible while waiting for the picture to be taken.

If your digital camera has an optical viewfinder and not an electronic one, you should never, never use this when pointing your digital camera towards the sun, especially for sunrise and sunset photos! As your digital camera's optical viewfinder is not tinted, it's almost as bad as just pointing your head and looking straight at the sun. This could cause serious eye damage. Looking through a viewfinder versus the LCD helps you hold the camera sturdier and closer to your eyes, thus reducing camera shake. However, in this instance, you should use your digital camera's LCD. If you're worried about camera shake, use a tripod. However, especially with the sunrise, due to the brightness of the sky, your digital camera should normally be able to take very fast photos, minimizing any camera shake.

During travel you could experience and might want to go to places that are cold. When the weather gets much colder, especially as it gets below freezing, take care to not breathe on your digital camera. Tiny water droplets in your breath could form condensation on your digital camera lens. If this happens, immediately wipe the moisture off with a lint-free cloth, lest it completely freeze and possibly cause damage.

It will allow you to transform a photograph completely. However, its tools are aimed at creative professionals. Even experts struggle to master it! If you have outgrown lesser photo-editing programs, Photoshop may be for you. There are no other programs in the same league. The first thing you should look for is ease of use. Try editing one of your photos. With any program, there will be a learning curve. But, you should be able to find the controls you need fairly easily.

New and expert photographers alike have experienced it. You take an otherwise perfect picture of friends or family but there's one major flaw: glowing red eyes. Here are some reliable tips for avoiding red-eye in the first place: whenever possible, try not to use a flash. If you have to use a flash, ask your subject to look toward the camera, but not directly at the lens. Also, use additional light sources in the room. You can also take pictures during the day, because at night the pupils will dilate meaning red-eye will be a certainty. Lastly, you can stand farther away from your subject.

Cropping is a good tool to use when you have a picture that has too much going on, or perhaps too little. In the former, you would want to cut the image down to just the subject of your picture, essentially eliminating all the distracting surrounding objects. In the latter, you would do the same thing, in order for your subject not to look too solitary. Once you begin cropping, you'll find there are many different creative ways to crop your pictures; every picture is different, and you'll find different ways to improve your pictures with cropping.

If you have a rather plain photograph, or a black and white picture, there are ways to manipulate the colors to make the picture more interesting. Your editing program will probably have a way to enhance the color of a picture, or you can completely change the color of an object. If you learn to use the tools well, you could be able to convert a black and white picture to color. You can also create aged effects, or make a picture grayscaled. Experiment with your program and find out what you can do to improve the coloring of your pictures.

When you upload your pictures from your digital camera to your computer, most of them will probably be a little blurry. Probably it won't be enough to make you want to change it, but if it's not, there's always the UnSharp Mask that you can use to sharpen the image. Most cameras don't apply any kind of sharpening filter to pictures they take, and so they won't always look as crisp as you might want. Most likely if you have a basic editing program you will be able to sharpen your pictures successfully, and you can sharpen them as much or as little as you want.

What's the "right" size for a picture? Well, that depends on the photo. Most monitors display at 72 dpi (dots per inch). So, if you want the picture to be 5 inches wide (probably about the biggest you would want for an e-mail message), the picture would be 360 pixels wide (5 inches x 72 dpi = 360 pixels). Pixel is short for "Picture Element" and is the smallest unit of visual information used to build an image. If you have ever zoomed in on an image, Pixels are those little squares that you see. The more pixels in an image, the better the resolution.

Saving your pictures in the appropriate format is very important to ensure the best quality. If you are planning to continue to work with a certain picture, save it as a TIFF image, as it will retain all the detail of the picture. However, if you want a compressed image and you are done working with it, you can save it as a JPEG. Although a JPEG is a lossy file format, it does not lose enough data to be noticeably visible, and it is a good compressing format. This means it will make the size of the file smaller. As long as you don't keep opening, editing, and saving a JPEG image, you won't get too much degradation of the photo.

Survivor the TV Show - Big Premier

CBS launches its 17th season of Survivor from the spectacular country of Gabon Africa. Nicknamed "The Last Eden" the West African country is right on the equator. Gabon has a beautiful coastline set against a country that is 85% rain forest. The diversity of wildlife including gorillas and elephants could make for an interesting season.

The Survivor reality TV Show decided to start with a two hour season premier, which means that two tribe members were voted off on the first night. Both members came from the Fang tribe which already appears to be severely outmatched. They lost three out of three challenges and are already down two players to what appears to be a much stronger Kota tribe.

Michelle was the last player picked to be on a tribe and the first player voted out by the Fang tribe. She didn't fit in at all in a tribe that she called "the dumbest people on earth", and seemed to be the obvious choice at the first Tribal Council. The same tribe then went on to vote out Gillian, the oldest woman in the game and seemingly the weakest player. Although there was some hint that it wasn't her lack of physical strength but her snoring that got her booted.

Dan was the first member sent to the infamous exile island. Survivor has added another new twist this season in offering exile island visitors a choice between a more luxurious stay and the opportunity to search for the hidden immunity idol. Unfortunately, Dan chose to search for the hidden idol with no success.

Randy, a 49 year old Wedding Videographer, was the first injury of the season. He hit his head in the dark of night and had to call in the medical support team to look at the resulting cut. The injury produced a lot of blood and required some stitches but doesn't appear as though it will affect Randy's standing in the game unless it gets infected.

The apparently superior Kota tribe wasted no time forming alliances. The first alliance was formed by Charlie and Marcus. Charlie, a gay lawyer, made no attempt to conceal his crush on Marcus, a straight doctor. Marcus, although not interested in a romance, was interested in an alliance. Before the end of the evening, Jacquie and Corinne joined the alliance.

Survivor Gabon looks like it will be another successful season with all of the reality TV we have become accustomed to. It's already shaping up with the usual helping of fighting, romance, back stabbing, and shrinking bodies barely covered in "buffs".

Down In the Lab: Frankenstein

When you think of the Frankenstein movies, names like Boris Karloff, Colin Clive, Mary Shelley and James Whale come to mind. But have you ever heard of Kenneth Strickfaden? Long ignored in the annals of horror movie fame, Strickfaden is the man whose electrical designs made Frankenstein the movie that it is. He was called "Dr. Frankenstein's electrician" and was directly responsible for all of the electrical effects used in the monster creation scene. He also created all the electrical effects for the following Frankenstein sequels. He was even a stunt double for Boris Karloff, who was deathly afraid of electricity.

Strickfaden was meticulous about his special effects, concocting various laboratory equipment, as well as securing the use of a Tesla Coil built by the legendary scientist Nikola Tesla himself. Rest assured, all the electricity in the film was real, and the equipment he used to produce them became known, in fandom, as "Strickfadens."

He was responsible for all those breathtaking electrical devices Frankenstein and Fritz, in various movies, clutched, clung to, and recoiled from. Strickfaden also coordinated the memorable lightening bolts that shot across the lab. Without the aid of Tesla's coil, those fantastic discharges would be impossible to create.

It should be noted that Tesla coils are a resonant transformer created by Serbian-American scientist Nikola Tesla around 1891. These coils create very high voltage, low current and high frequency alternating current electricity. The electrical discharges produced those lighting-like plasma filaments that were wonderfully used in the film. Believe it or not during the early 1900s Tesla coils were used to apply high frequency current directly to the body in what was then considered therapy!

Kenneth Strickfaden was heralded as an innovative special effects genius, especially in the 1930s and 1940s. He worked on movies from "Frankenstein" to "The Wizard of Oz" to "The Mask of Fu Man Chu." In his later years, he worked on various television series, including "The Munsters." With more than 100 motion pictures to his credit, he still managed to give 1500 traveling science demonstrations and lectures across the U.S. and Canada. He remains one of the lesser known heroes of early film and television, where the lightening bolts were real, the laboratory dangerous, and stuntmen walked into electrical storms.

When you think of a mad scientist, you're bound to imagine images of a be-speckled, manically laughing, slightly hunched over crackpot in a laboratory surrounded by beakers full of bubbling, fizzing solvents and crackling electrical machines. The mad scientist is always obsessed with ranting monologues about being misunderstood by the world. He's not mad, he's misunderstood and now the world has to pay for not supporting his megalomaniacal wish to play God.

Every culture has its distinctive mad scientist: Victor Frankenstein, Doctor Jekyll, Rotwang, Dr. Steel, Griffin, Doctor No, The Invisible Man, Dr. Phibes and, of course, Dr. Moreau. They have all been exiled form normal science and are forced to experiment in secret until that fateful day, when they will unleash their creation on the world. A multitude of bad experiments and bad special effects could have been kept from the world, if only reasonable scientists had listened to their stark, raving mad associates.

For our lack of understanding, we have been inundated with a multitude of Saturday matinees and worn, thumbed-through paperback novels chronicling their exploits. Comic books and posters alike encapsulate famous line like, "They all laughed at me. But I will show them. One day it will be the one who laughs last!" And so the ride to the center of madness continues, with us, the audience, grinning from ear to ear.

There have been numerous great actors who have made their names playing mad scientists. Luminaries like Bela Lugosi, Charles Laughton, Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee and the indomitable, Vincent Price have all reinforced that powerful archetype. Price, in particular, surprised audiences with his depiction of the disfigured Dr. Phibes, in The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971). So twisted and entrancing a tale was woven by the filmmakers that audiences demanded a sequel, Dr. Phibes Rises Again (1972).

In "The Island of Doctor Moreau," written by H.G. Wells in 1896, our mad scientist is the eponymous Dr. Moreau. He uses a variety of medications and solvents that turn animals into humans, which have managed to populate his hidden island. Moreau is lord of these man-beasts, and though he has caused pain and suffering, he has no intention to stop his experiments. As the story unfolds, the protagonist, Prendick, the embodiment of the English upper-class, slowly begins to understand that indeed Moreau is onto something concerning the nature of man. Indeed it seems that something is our never-ending fascination with the misunderstood and the incomprehensible.

So karaoke songs are just like any other songs right? Well yes and no. They have the same tunes but they are not by the same artists. There are many factors that people consider when they are picking the song they want to sing at a Karaoke and often is not based on whether they have the voice for that song. History Customs of Halloween

Have you ever questioned why on earth we celebrate Halloween and where the idea came from? If you are like most of us, you simply enjoy the fun and games, and of course treats, and haven't really given the roots of the holiday much thought. But the history of Halloween is a truly cool story in its own right.

Very Far back in the day, about 2000 or so years ago, there lived a people known as Celts. They inhabited the area we call Ireland, and there were also some in France and the UK, too. In fact, the oral communication that is spoken in Ireland is not Irish, as you may think. It is Celtic.

In Any Case, the Celtic people had a different New Year's Day than we do here today. Their new year began on November 1st; this is probably because November marked the end of the bountiful, glorious, harvest season and the start of the cold, dark winter. Hence, it seems like a perfect time for branding a new year, right?

So, the Celtic people had a theory that their New Year's Eve, October 31, was the night when there was the perfect chance for the spooks of dead people to return to earth, and so the worlds of the living and the dead joined for a night. On this night, the Celtic people turned to their Druid priests for insight into what was to come in the New Year. And some theories of the history of Halloween include the priests' power to recognize the future by determining it from the dead who came back to earth.

So, the early interpretation of Halloween, called SamHain ("sow-in"), was born. The Celts ordinarily built these vast bonfires and dressed up in the skins of animals. They accumulated around the bonfires in these "costumes" and sacrificed some of their crops and animals to the Celtic gods in the hopes that the gods would be good to them in the following year.

Later, the Romans overran Ireland and the other Celtic lands, and they bestowed their own twist into what we now recognize as Halloween; subsequently the history of Halloween was changed a bit. They added a couple things into SamHain. First, they added a day called Faralia, which was a day the Romans had set aside as a day to recollect and honor those who had died before us. Then, they also included a day to delight Pomona, a goddess whose symbolic representation is the apple. Remember those days of bobbing for apples as a kid? You can thank Pomona for that tradition.

And Then, Christianity came to the area, around the 800s. The Pope at the time, Pope Bonaface, stated November 1st All Saint's Day, which is still renowned as a Holy Day by the Catholic Church. The Church often times attempted to substitute pagan holidays with associated holidays in order to quell the pagan people who wanted festivals, but also to make Christian-based celebrations. The night before All Saint's Day, SamHain to the Celts, began to be called All Hallow's Eve or All Hallow's Mass. Eventually, it became acknowledged as Halloween.

Overcome Your Fear Of Public Singing - Karaoke

Are you afraid of public karaoke performance? Before you start singing, you must: Memorize your songs - Discover the tune, the language, and practise the actions you are going to use. It is also really essential to learn and know precisely where to come in at the opening of the song.

Breathing - Deep respiration is proposed to assist you with performance anxiousness. The more you sing the better it gets. Yet, this does not happen with everyone. Some people proceed to fight with anxiety. The main thing you require to remember is to never give up. Don't let the fearfulness stop you from doing what you enjoy.

Dress to impress - When you are going to perform make sure that you dress fitly. It is better to be over dressed than under dressed.

Make up - Stage lights can make a person look washed out or really sick. So a bit of colour will help you to avoid this. Age appropriate make up please!

Hair - Make it look good!

Warm up your voice before you sing - Do your vocal practices, breathing and warm ups.

Arrive on time - You could get disqualified or a replacment might be found if you are late.

Enjoy yourself - Masses will savour your public presentation more if you are involved in what you are singing.

Mistakes - If you happen to make a error pretend as though nothing materialised and keep going. Don't say sorry, whoops, wind your eyes or start laughing. Most people won't have a clue that you have made a error.

Recognise and pass along the message of the song - During performance it is very fundamental to commune the substance or narrative behind the song. Dont just stand like a statue. Learn about your character. Rehearse this at home when you sing your songs. If you do not practice beforehand you will not be able to make it materialize on the day of your performance.

Applause - Stand and receive the applause as it's being given and then walk off the stage. Constantly make sure that you hold back until the music stops before you leave. Remember that walking on and off stage are several fundamental parts of your performance.

Reward yourself - After singing try not to remember about the negatives. A performance is rarely perfect in every way. Don't permit errors or letdowns halt you from singing once again. A person who never produces any slips doesn't do anything.

Free From Adobe Photoshop

Recently Adobe announced that it will release a free online version of its popular Photoshop image-editing software within six months. The online version of the program will be a stripped-down version of the application that has become an industry standard for graphics professionals.

The move is part of a larger effort by the company to bring key aspects of its software portfolio - which includes audio, video and graphics applications - online to draw advertising dollars and lure users into buying software upgrades. Until now, Adobe's business has been based primarily on packaged software.

A sneak peak at Adobe's photography's future: Currently the company offers four versions of its Photoshop software, beginning with the high-end CS2 package which is targeted to creative professionals all the way to the free Album Starter Edition which is used by the casual photographer. According to Adobe, the online offering will be more like the consumer products.

Last month, the company announced that it would enter a partnership with image- and video-hosting web site Photobucket to give the site's 35 million users free access to Adobe's web-based video editing tools.

The company has also said that it is planning to announce more partnerships with Internet companies over the coming months, and that the undertakings would be driven by its desire for increased advertising revenue and boosted software upgrades from existing customers.

Plan on Photobucket features to become available to the site's users sometime in March. As mentioned earlier, Adobe's shift to free online applications follows similar moves by other software makers. Google (Charts), for instance, has released online word processing and spreadsheet software under the Google Docs banner

Movie Review: An American Carol

When Democratic presidential candidate, Barack Obama, can raise $9 million in two days in Hollywood this month, it's fairly clear that the entertainment world is heavily skewed to the left. Not being on the left makes it hard for me to stomach anything coming out of Hollywood with any sort of political spin. That's why I was pleasantly surprised with David Zucker's "An American Carol." Set to release in early October, this is one of the rare conservative films jam packed with star power. It's cast includes giants and its message is clear: Freedom has meaning is well worth fighting for!

Zucker's comedy is a frontal assault on several key liberal issues, focusing on the war on terrorism, the clash between the West and Islam, and even something near and dear to the socialist soul...government-run healthcare.

Michael Moore's documentary, "Sicko", was an extremely contentious critique on the American healthcare system, going so far as to compare it to Cuba's Communist model...according to Moore's radical logic the Communist system scored superior compared to ours! "An American Carol" begins with a spoof on "Sicko", showing a smug "Malone" (Moore's double) strolling past long lines of "common people" awaiting care, empty lines for "party officials," and well-armed soldiers keeping order. The scene finale shows a mad rush of Cubans fighting each other to get aboard a far-too-small boat to flee the country. The take-away: let's not forget that Cubans routinely flee for America and there's a reason for that!

The core of the story centers around Islamic jihadists plotting to attack America. The first scene with jihadists takes place in Afghanistan, where a small group of fanatics is attempting to randomly kill a crowd of people lining up to vote. Moral: let's remember that we freed Afghanistan from a criminal regime, comprised of thugs who held their own population hostage and orchestrated the devastating assault of 9/11.

The clincher for me was when a Rosie O'Donnell character rises to the defense of Islam, showing a made-up video of "radical Christians," arguing that they are just as much a threat to the West. The scene had me on the floor cracking up as nuns detonated bombs on public buses and priests hijacked airplanes. Yet there are special occasions, like family reunions, when you will probably want to pay a professional to be sure it is done right. Of course, it will cost more than taking it yourself and having your own pictures enlarged. But the enduring quality of a good portrait will be worth it. After all, you are investing in the future by recording a memory of the past. Therefore, selecting the right photographer will be important. Consider these eight principles in making a wise choice.

1) Location- Is the studio within a reasonable distance from your home? You won't want to drive hours to get the picture made, then return to get it. Then too, does it have sufficient parking and is it accessible so that you don't have to wait long in traffic to get there?

2) Facility- One family got up early on a Saturday morning to meet their appointment for a family portrait only to find the studio was too small to get everyone in the picture. Is the studio large enough to accommodate the group you want photographed?

3) Punctuality- You will want to be on time for an appointment. Are they? Are you allowed all the time promised to get the picture right? Are the proofs and final prints available when they say they will be? It might be good to check with others about the reputation of the firm in these matters.

4) Personality- Do the employees look sharp? Is the receptionist and/or photographer friendly? Do they treat you with respect? Are they personable? Are they patient with small children and babies? Are they willing to accommodate special needs people? Usually portrait time means the whole group has been under stress to get clean and dressed and there on time. That means smaller children may show it by refusing to smile. The photographer should be able, under most circumstances, to overcome these everyday occurrences.

5) Skill- The poorest part of home photography is usually lighting. Is their lighting professional? Is the photographer skilled at arranging the scene so key people are highlighted, the picture is balanced, and everyone can be seen clearly? A skilled photographer should know how to set the scene quickly so that the picture will be attractive.

6) Choice- A good photographer will take ample pictures so that you have plenty of choices. Are the proofs ready to view immediately or will you have to return? Will they make recommendations that are in your best interest and not just their pocketbook? Are they able to present the various packages without putting you under pressure?

7) Integrity- Is the company honest? If they promised you one free picture or your unchosen proofs, do they keep that promise? Do they have the pictures ready when they promised? How would you estimate your overall experience in working with them?

8) Price- Professional photography may seem expensive but remember that they must pay for quality cameras, staff, and facilities. But be sure their price is competitive. Call at least three establishments, describe what you want and ask the cost before deciding.

From personal experience, getting a good family portrait can be stressful. Yet it is worth the investment. If you honor these rules in selecting a photographer, the record of your special event will indeed be an investment for a long time to come.

One of the most popular cartoon characters of all-time is Donald Duck. Donald is a character in the Disney family and was first introduced as a follow up to Mickey Mouse. He appeared in his first cartoon on June 9th 1934. His initial cartoon was "The Wise Little Hen." Walt Disney first came up with the idea for Donald Duck when he heard Clarence Nash recite "Mary Had a Little Lamb" in a duck voice. Clarence Nash became the voice of Donald until 1983, when he trained Tony Anselmo to take over the voice. The voice of Donald Duck is perhaps his most beloved characteristic.

Donald was created in part because Disney felt that he had explored all of Mickey Mouse's foibles and wanted an edgier cartoon character. He knew that he couldn't display any negative traits in Mickey because he was the flagship of his franchise. However, a new character could become whatever he wanted. Donald has always been known as a character with an explosive temper and has been put in several hilarious situations as a result.

Donald was featured in an assortment of cartoons. During World War II, he was featured in eight different films depicting him in the Army. Disney used these films to entertain and to inspire patriotism. Subsequently, Donald became a more popular character than Mickey Mouse. The audience hadn't outgrown Mickey completely, but they were looking for something new, and an ill-tempered, funny-voiced duck was it.

After the war, Donald was put into even more shorts and features. During this time, Disney introduced several of Donald's relatives. His nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie were introduced during this period, as was his uncle, Ludwig von Drake. A popular spin-offs in recent decades was Duck Tales, which featured Donald leaving his nephews with their rich Uncle Scrooge McDuck. While Donald had a limited role in the series, his family still made up the bulk of the characters. Daisy Duck has been the love interest of Donald for many years also. She is another character that was made as a result of the Donald Duck success.

Here are some thoughts as to why the Daytona Rolex Sport Model is hugely popular, fashionable, and functional:

1. The Paul Newman Factor - It must be stated that Paul Newman has never publicly endorsed the Rolex Daytona, and Rolex has never officially used Mr. Newman's name in any literature for this or any other Rolex model. Nevertheless, Mr. Newman's name has been associated with the model for almost 40 years, and to all but the most discerning collector, the mention of one is immediately followed by the other. The reasons for this eponymy vary.

Some say that Mr. Newman wore this model while appearing in an Indy racing car movie called 'Winning' in 1969. Others say he wore it on promotional posters and Italian magazine covers at the time. The Initial Scarcity of the Model - The Rolex Daytona was introduced in 1961 in a very limited production run inspired by their sponsorship of the Daytona 24-hour auto race in Daytona Beach, Florida. The need for a wristwatch with a built-in stopwatch for time trials dovetailed very nicely with Rolex's need for a new marketing strategy, and thus a legend was born. However, the model didn't take off in popularity until it became a must-have for Italian watch collectors in the early to mid 1980s. Other collectors noted the trend, and it became a sellers? market where few prices were deemed too astronomical for authentic 'Paul Newman' Daytonas.

3. Style - Style is very much in the eye of the beholder, but the clean simplicity, distinctive triple sub-dials, and bold, masculine design of the Daytona are inarguably part of the model's enduring allure and popularity. The adjustable bezel features logical graduations for tracking units per hour and the dial comes in a variety of striking configurations including the true Paul Newman model with an exotic cream-colored dial with black registers.

4. Functionality - Above all other considerations, it was the need for functionality that inspired designers to introduce the Rolex Daytona. Of course, it had to be pleasing to the eye, but the Rolex name epitomizes practicality and the need for form to follow function. In addition to the accurate stopwatch capabilities, the Daytona also introduced features like the screw-down pushers and crowns to ensure that a measurement was not accidentally reset by an inadvertent bump. Other innovations included pushers that were waterproofed with rubber o-rings and waterproofing was increased to a depth of 100 meters.

Although Rolex introduced new Daytona models in 1991 and 2000, these Rolexes continue to be highly prized by collectors and other Rolex aficionados for the reasons listed above and probably many more. Which of these attributes is most important depends largely on the owner and their motivations for wanting one, but if there is one constant thread that connects them all, it would be the pride of wearing a Rolex and the joy of owning a legendary Rolex Daytona.

In fact, that's just a few of the many alternatives editing software allows you. Modern day photographers unanimously assert the use of editing software in creating their fabulous works of art. And the best part about editing digital photography is that you can do it by yourself, with as little or as much time you wish to dedicate to the task, once you understand the software you've chosen to use as well as the possibilities it offers.

Editing software programs have now been developed to accommodate the needs of users from almost every walk of life. Whether you are a novice who just wants a few slight retouches on his vacation snaps, or a seasoned professional who needs that cutting edge over his competition, there's almost nothing you can think of that editing software won't allow you to do. Many modern versions of editing software can slice your image in several parts, which you can then use as singular images, or juxtapose them against others with a seamless finish. If you opt for a more advanced version, you can also avail of the revolutionary feature called 'Layering' which segregates your image into layers to allow you to experiment with a plethora of effects on individual portions of the image and them superimpose them on your image. You can even foray into different effects for each layer to come up with a unique combination of effects each time you work on the same image.

It is essential that you choose the software you wish to buy as per your requirements. If you aren't going to do anything more than a few retouches to your vacation pictures, then it doesn't make a lot of sense to invest in a more advanced version of software like Adobe Photoshop or Corel Painter, which will cost you a lot more money, plus time to learn the nuances. You will find tools like Google Picasa or paint.net a lot more suited to your requirements. Many amateur versions can be found free on the internet which will allow you basic features like cropping, rotation and red-eye reduction. However, if you are looking to home your skills on a professional platform, then it would be wise if you took the time and did your research on the internet to find one that suits you the best. So, the next time you're about to upload an album to photo bucket, or even creating a magnetic PowerPoint presentation, spare a few more minutes to edit the pictures you're using. Choosing Karaoke Songs For The Different Age Groups

Almost every age group we have, has karaoke lovers, and they all seem to enjoy the karaoke songs no matter what age group they are most applicable to. Having said that, every age group pretty much has its favorites though. If you are a Karaoke Disc Jockey it might be beneficial for you to know what songs would fit in best or be most popular with the general age group of your audience. Here are just a few examples of how you could categorize your music according to audience age group.

Suppose you are doing a birthday party for pre schoolers or entertaining a family group. Here is where your job is really going to get challenging, trying to please such a wide diversity of age groups. Perhaps at one time the little ones would have run off to play while the adults did their little sing along. Not anymore these little ones want in on the action. Most likely if they have learned how to talk then they are ready to sink karaoke songs. Often these songs that are favored on the nursery rhyme or kindergarten songs such as, Baa Baa Black sheep, Oh Susanna, or old MacDonald had a farm. Think back and you'll remember how much you enjoyed them as a kid.

Only problem here is if parents are present then they might not be too happy at their pre teeners belting out some heavy metal music. Try and find a happy medium here. You just might convince the kids to sing out some Daddy A Go Go karaoke songs. They may or may not be their favorites but they do find them amusing.

For all the in-betweens now is going to be your easiest part. For the teens you are going to need a selection of the most current karaoke songs, in rock, heavy rock and rap. Then for the parents you're looking at songs from the 50's up to the 80's. Oh yes there's a bit more that has got to be included here. For each of these eras you need a selection of rock and roll, country western, jazz, and perhaps some blues.

For the senior there something sad about their music, and that's becomes it comes from a time when so many of their loved ones were killed in the wars. So the music they seem to play and love the most is what is called the old war songs. To your best to have a selection of Karaoke songs to fit this age group. Such as the white cliffs of Dover, or I'll take you home again Kathleen. One only needs to look at the face of one of the seniors singing these songs and you will see a flood of memories pass across their face.

So doing a karaoke party for a mixed group can be pretty challenging when it comes to the music. After all you do want to be popular amongst all age groups. If you have a tight budget however, you might want to stick to entertaining the age group that you have the most music for.

Summer Road Trip Songs

Choosing Summer Road Trip Songs

Your songs don't have to actually involve road trips, but it sure lends a fun air if they talk about traveling and cars, which is why most of the tunes on the majority of song lists are all about being on the move. This just seems appropriate for a car full of people whizzing down the highway and they are also usually songs that you already know and can sing along to.

Look for songs that are upbeat and will keep you bobbing your head and tapping the steering wheel . . . the last thing you want is to fall asleep to some slow ballad that doesn't inspire anyone in the car to sing. Songs that are easy to sing along to are an excellent way to draw fellow passengers out of their stupor and get them bouncing around and air-strumming to the music.

When you do find those songs for a road trip, it's a good idea to put a lot onto your disk or MP3 player. This is because a long trip will quickly exhaust your options. You don't want to be listening to the same ten songs over and over again every hour! So consider putting at least 50-100 songs together for your road trip compilation. This will give you a good 4-8 hours of music and you won't have to get bored of any particular song, unless, of course, you want to and hit repeat over and over.

If you are having troubles finding enough songs for the compilation, recruit your passengers. Get them to each chip in 10 or 20 songs that they enjoy and you can all be introduced to some new tunes while also enjoying your own favorites. Mix the song order up a bit so you won't have each person's favorites all in a row . . . this way it will be more interesting for everyone and if there is something you don't really like, it's only one song long.

Important Notes for your Camera

Experiment with Exposure: Both digital and even film cameras work best in sunlight, but once you move indoors or into dim light, it gets more difficult. Experiment with exposure to best handle any lighting situation.

Try all sorts of variations. Shoot your subject from different angles with different lighting if you can. Try turning off your camera's flash in some shots. Try 'fill flash' if your camera will allow it. Sometimes fill flash can make a perfectly exposed picture better. Sometimes you can add drama by turning off your flash and leaving your subject somewhat underexposed.

Every once in a while, you'll take the same picture three different ways, with three different exposure options, and get three radically different pictures -- and all of them will look good. But you've got to experiment.

Bracket your shots if you can, with one shot slightly underexposed, one slightly overexposed, and one "just right." Even though some digital cameras will do this automatically, you still need to practice. The last thing you want is two of your shots to look as if they were taken accidentally or by a surprised photographer who was expecting only one shot instead of three.

Special Features: Many digital cameras now come equipped with a variety of special features. Some of these include allowing you to take short QuickTime clips and the ability to record sound annotations. Even though some allow you to experiment with effects such as black and white or sepia-tones, focus on mastering the basics first before taking on the special effects.

Many of the special effects offered by digital cameras can be done without them. Software such as Photoshop can quickly and easily change your normal color image into a perfect black and whit or sepia toned copy. The reality is that if you can do it easily in Photoshop, concentrate on taking a good color photo and let the program take care of the special effects.

This does not mean that you shouldn't try out some of the other special effects. For example, if you pan your camera to track a car moving at high speed, the car will be in sharp focus but the background will be blurred, creating an interesting picture. Or you can do the opposite: focus on a particular stationary object such as a child flying a kite, or a freshly-painted fire hydrant and let a speeding car to enter the frame. You'll then have a sharply focused center of attention with the added advantage of motion.

Silhouettes are another nice special effect. Try taking a photo with your subject in shadow, eclipsing a brightly-exposed object in the background. The reverse -- a brightly exposed subject against a dark background -- can be just as interesting. Getting a good silhouette with film is expensive: you shoot a lot of frames with little or no reward. With a digital camera, however, the only cost is your time and patience, and your patience will be rewarded.
