Trends Show Retailers Going Green Rising To The Top

By Rick London

As I predicted in an article several years ago, retailers, including the big guys, have gone eco-friendly. I saw it coming. I wrote about it. And, of course, it is a welcome change. The Ralph's, Targets and Sams Clubs of the world, most likely, will never go fully earth-friendly, and merely offer sections in their stores rather than become another Trader Joe's but that's alright. It's a very good sign.

Why? The obvious part is that anything one person or a group of people do, in even a small way, to leave shorter "carbon footprints", the better. The signs of a "planet in trouble" have been with us for awhile. It is nothing new. Today, one does not need to be what was commonly referred to as a "tree-hugger" to do their part in pitching in to help in their own small way to help the earth, hence us, live longer and healthier.

I am a cartoonist and online retailer. I sell licensed images of my cartoon images on a myriad of products such as Tshirts, mouse pads, coffee mugs, and others. When I told my friends I was planning to open a 100% organic cotton (using nontoxic dyes) T-shirt shop as my latest online venture, a good many of them laughed. And not at my cartoons. Some felt I was "losing it". The truth is, I am finding it. Though I don't know if I will ever become 100% earth-friendly in my entrepreneurial pursuits, that is my goal. I still have many existing customers at other stores who have supported us all these years, and they are a completely different market. It is imperative to cater to them and provide a product and service that they have come to appreciate. It does not make them "bad" or me bad for providing that.

I would have considered it a negative, given the opportunity to get into the "green sector" of business, not to have taken it. And finally I did. Actually, I had been attempting this for years, but I could not strike a deal with a manufacturer that suited me. I wanted to find one in which I could provide an extremely high quality fabric, and have my cartoon images imprinted with natural dyes that would not harm the skin. Easier said than done. There were a few our but there was always an issue or minimal purchases, quality control, and the like. It was "always somethin'" as Gilda used to say.

Because of the good works of several fine firms such as Zazzle.com, and contracts they have with American Apparel and Edun Organics (two of the best), I can offer the quality green tee and have it printed and drop-shipped anywhere in the world within 24 hours. And price-wise, I am now competing with the bigger dogs, and often beating them.

From Portland to Miami and everywhere in between, tees remain the rage. According to a study, the average American has at least thirty designed tees, and almost one hundred percent have a "favorite one". In addition, it is apparent we are becoming more health-conscious people these days. We try to eat healthier foods, take organic vitamins, eat less red meat, consume less trans-fat. The skin is the largest and most absorbent organ the body has. We use dyes that have no toxins. And wearing premium ones, paying a few dollars more than one would for a regular cotton or cotton blend tee is even smarter. It looks softer and sexier and feels better on the body. And one is doing their part to help the planet a little. To me, that kind of peace of mind is worth a lot more than a few packs of gum.

Tattoo- The Origin of Tattoos

By Mike Wamoult

Any look through history with the appropriate research into facts will inform you that tattoos have a great and interesting history. Sailors who travelled to Polynesia witnessed the locals with tattoos and adopted the practice among themselves as a consequence. It was from the islands of Polynesia that the idea spread to Europe and the West in general, However, the discovery of tattoos in Polynesia was relatively recent and had nothing to do with the fact that Egypt was reputed to have pioneered the art of tattoos more than 6000 years ago.

Of course during the Egyptian times people were not getting tattoos to display on their bodies in the form of artwork but the earliest tattoos were given on women's legs as a symbolic but preventative measure to avoid dangers of childbirth. From Egypt tattooing was later spread and shared with other parts of Africa, into Asia, and Pacific islands through trade lines and travelers.

Archaeologists and Anthropologists discovered the mummified figure of a man in ice who dated back to the year 3300 BC and he had markings on his body similar to tattoos. These scientists believe that this is the earliest recorded evidence as to the existence of tattoos. More common tattoos were found on both Egyptian as well as Nubian mummies from the 2000 BC era.

Ever since this period, different cultures have used the art of tattooing in one form or another for different purposes. Some of the purposes of tattooing include religious and superstitious reasons. Others have chosen to bear tattoos for historical reasons. Tattoos have also been more than an indication of such reasons and have also played a role as symbols of pride. Polynesians allowed both men and women to bear tattoos but in various other cultures only men were allowed to bear tattoos. In Japan the art of tattooing even goes back earlier than the period it was discovered in the West and was used for various purposes.

Thomas Edison created an electric engraver in 1876 and it later evolved to become the machine which would bring about the popularity of modern day tattooing. Ever since this period various design revisions were undergone and newer machines that were more advanced and capable of tattooing came into play. Samuel O' Reilly used Edison's original blueprints to create an electric pen which played a large role in revolutionizing the tattooing industry.

The machine we use today was first patented by Charlie Wagner, which was called a dual coil reciprocating engraver, especially made for tattooing. Circuses also played a big part in the history of tattooing. The modern circus always has a freak show exhibit has always been the heavily tattooed man or woman. This was the introduction of tattooing into America.

Pope Hadrian banned tattoos as far back as 787 AD and for that reason there has always been one controversy or the other as far as tattoos are concerned. Because of an outbreak of Hepatitis in the 1960's which was blamed on tattoos, a lot of states outlawed the practice. Tattooing has become synonymous with rebellion, gangs, dirty sailors, and motorcycles.

Today, centuries after the origination of tattoos they are becoming less taboo and more accepted as cleaner, more professional shops open up and the artistic boundaries are pushed with the medium of tattoo art. Also, the advances in color and other tattoo equipment have made tattoos more than just a symbol or a testimony, but a real piece of art on skin.

The Healing Stages Of Tattoos

By Mike Wamoult

A fresh tattoo is more or less an open wound so it requires the right aftercare so that it can heal properly. Each stage of the healing process means that the tattoo will need a different sort of caring method. Tattoos should be kept clean at all costs and should be exposed to the least amount of germs possible. Healing stages tend to be unique to various individuals so this is something you will have to consider as well.

Lots of factors tend to play their respective roles in the manner which your tattoo will heal. Some of these factors include the type of skin that you have, where the tattoo is located on your anatomy and the tattoo artist as well as the methods involved in creating and engraving the tattoo.

Any tattoo artist who finishes your tattoo will usually put a bandage over your tattoo along with instructions that you should leave it in place for a number of hours in order to reduce the amount of exposure your fresh tattoo has to the external elements.

Getting a new tattoo is similar to having a minor surgery so if your tattoo tends to bleed out a little for a day after you get it, this is normal. Your bandage should do a good job of absorbing any bleeding that results from your tattoo immediately after the procedure. You should take care when removing your bandage and you shouldn't allow too much blood to dry on it. When it is time to remove the bandage from your tattoo, take your time and do it with the right amount of care. Some amount of blood may have dried on your tattoo and ripping it off abruptly may affect your tattoo as well.

As soon as it is time to get the bandage off from your tattoo, you should do it rather carefully. It may be possible that some amount of blood has dried on the bandage and ripping it off suddenly could ruin the look of your new tattoo.

The first healing stage of your new tattoo is experienced almost initially so expect that your tattoo is going to be sore, red, and possibly a bit swollen. You may also experience a slight stinging sensation that is similar to the feeling of sunburn. Tattoo artists will tell you that getting a tattoo feels like strong sunburn; the truth is that a healing tattoo will often feel like sunburn.

It is also common for a new and healing tattoo to feel dry, tight and itchy as well. In order to minimize this feeling and promote your comfort, it might be advisable to continue applying tattoo aftercare lotion in order to moisturize the tattoo and alleviate the symptoms experienced. Small particles of colored skin may drift off your tattoo as it heals as well and this is a rather normal occurrence too.

Different healing stages tend to be linked with new tattoos and they follow from the first week to the third week. In the first week, you should expect to feel a little soreness or redness accompanied with slight bleeding which may occur within a day after the procedure. In the second week you should expect your tattoo to flake or peel and perhaps become itchy. Week three is more or less the final week and the scabbing and peeling will have reduced although the area might still feel rather sensitive as well.

Health Risks and Your Tattoos

By Mike Wamoult

The health risks that tend to be associated with commercial tattooing are usually overblown and people have gone to all lengths to castigate the art of tattooing and its practitioners. Despite this aversion by some to the issue of tattoos and their practice, tattoo studios and enterprises are opening up all over different neighborhoods in recognition of the fact that they are becoming more popular.

Due to the fact that tattoo shops are growing rather quickly and in spots that would ordinarily not play host to any such establishment. Some examples of such locations are various middle-class cities and towns across the United States and the world.

In past times media has suggested that there are serious health risks related to tattooing. These suggestions include that tattooing may involve unusually high risks related to the transmission of such diseases as HIV/AIDS and hepatitis.

In reality, there has never been a real documented case of HIV transmission occurring via tattooing anywhere in the United States. On the other hand however, more than five cases of HIV transmission through dentists and dental workers have been experienced.

With respect to hepatitis and tattooing, more than 14,000 cases of the condition are reported on an annual basis. 12 or so of these cases have been associated with tattoos but more than 43 of these cases resulted from a trip to dentist. Tattoo studios follow stringent safety regulations laid down by law so health risks which are related to tattooing are more or less obsolete.

Tattoos may also get infected without the right aftercare. Certain people are also known to have various reactions to different tattoo inks and while a number of these inks used tend to have the approval of the U.S Food and Drug Administration authority, this authority is in no way responsible for the regulation of what goes into the tattoo inks.

Infection usually occurs with new tattoos when there is no proper aftercare. A number of people also experience allergic reactions to various tattoo inks. Though most of the inks used in tattooing have approval from the U.S Food and Drug Administration, the FDA is not responsible for the regulation of tattoo inks. The artists themselves must take safety measures such as the use of gloves and the inspection of hands to determine whether they have any cuts or sores and to close up these sores. Hangnails should be removed and fingernails should be kept short and trimmed in order to prevent the gloves from puncturing. You should stay away from tattooing when you are experiencing lesions, dermatitis as well as allergic reactions.

Because of the nature of the rules and safety regulations which usually apply to the practice of tattooing, tattoo parlors tend to be very careful with the issue of providing these tattoos. The health risks described under most circumstances are those which occur in cases where the proper procedures required are not adhered to. As far as the United States is concerned, getting a tattoo is something safe which you should not bother about as long as you a dealing with a safe and reputable tattoo salon.

Guitar Tabs: Stairway to the Rock Gods

By Fabian Toulouse

Got great dreams of taking the stage with a guitar and inciting screaming fans into convulsions and mesmerized teens into virtual hero worship? It's a hard road to the top, but every rock star started with that same dream; they all had to begin at the beginning when it came to learning music.. Guitar tablature, or tabs, is a type of universal music notation for stringed instruments.

Unlike traditional music notation for piano and wind instruments, picking up guitar basics is not that complicated. Tablature is more visually representative of the instrument, for one thing. Think of it as shorthand compared to dense written prose. Once you understand how to translate the style of notation, guitar tabs make it easy to pick up the music you love most. Later, when your own creative juices start flowing, this style of notation makes transcribing your own music simple and painless.

For guitar purposes, tablature appears as six lines, each one indicating a string on the guitar. The top line indicates the first, or slimmest string; the bottom line is for the sixth or thickest string. Between the lines are small numbers. These tell which fret should be pressed upon when playing that note. Sound simple? Once you put it in practice, it is a breeze to figure out.

After you understand the basics, the sky's the limit. Lots of guitar tabs for awesome songs are found online. There are lessons from real pros, videos of all sorts of groups and rock star dreamers, and detailed instructions on how to perform lots of guitar licks. You can even submit your own tabs, if you want.

Nothing compares to the feeling of finally mastering a favorite song, even if you never perform in front of thousands of adoring fans. Rocking out in your own garage is pretty satisfying, too, and it has never been easier to pick up guitar than now, with the aid of the internet.

Solving Some Concerns in Digital Macro Photography

By Dan Feildman

We have always found that looking at objects from another perspective is fascinating. This is because of the fact that we often discover new things just by looking at a familiar object from a different angle or focus. This might be the reason for people's fascination with digital macro photography.

Without a doubt, digital macro photography is a form of art. Only the imagination of an artist can transform something commonplace and elevate it into an expression defining a facet of life. That is the essence of art itself. Art is the reflection of the world as seen by the artist. By viewing an art piece such as digital macro photography, we see a glimpse of the world through the eyes of those around us creating an emotional and powerful bond.

Another thing about digital macro photography you should know is that it is not easy. You need to consider a lot of factors in order to produce great photographs. What are these factors?

Skills - You need to have the skills necessary for digital macro photography. This includes the ability to see those fragments of beauty within the world that would be shared with those that would view your work. You also need technical skills such as a steady hand. When taking digital macro photographs, even hardly perceptible movements of the hand can spoil your picture.

The proper camera skills are a necessity. You need to be able to adjust the camera in order to capture the picture that you want. Although you can edit a digital macro photograph through your computer, knowing how to take the picture correctly from behind the lens will save you time and work later.

Some people have the necessary skills naturally. However, it is still important to hone these skills by taking classes or attending workshops. Remember that digital macro photography is all about showing things in different ways. Because of this, you need to accept the fact that other people may see your work differently from the way you see it. A fresh eye never hurts.

Equipment - You will also need the right tools. The proper tools will go a long way in helping you to achieve the results that you want. Although there are tools today that declare themselves usable for any photography type, try to find equipment especially designed for digital macro photography. The right camera and gear can most certainly bring out the best in your abilities.

There is a lot of effort and work behind digital macro photography for the perfect result, so the correct tools are important. With the right equipment, your goals in digital macro photography are one step closer to being a reality and portraying the message you want to send.

3) Subject - everything is interesting when viewed in different ways. However, some subjects are more interesting than others. Some objects, when you choose them as subjects of digital macro photography, manage to amaze you with the amount of things you do not know about them. Great subjects of digital macro photography reveal worlds beyond what you can see with the naked eye. So choose your subjects wisely.

How to Frame Your Picture

By David Peters

Framing your photograph can turn what would otherwise be a boring picture into a visually pleasing one. Often times an element in the foreground can be used to create the frame. Some examples of framing include using an overhanging tree branch, a window frame, a door, arches, a fence, rows of trees, etc.

Frames serve to isolate the main subject of your photograph and create an interesting composition. When framing your photograph it is oftentimes the feeling of depth you're after. At times you may decide to retain the detail of the frame (as in a wall, fence or branch), or let the frame go completely dark (as in a window frame).

When you are organizing a photo, look around the foreground (and sometimes, even middle or background) and find objects that can be used as a natural frame. At times you may need to physically back up a bit, kneel down for a more pleasant composition, or even zoom in to include your subject within the frame that you have chosen.

You can use image editing software to creating framing after the fact by combining two or more pictures. There are some very dramatic effects which can be accomplished this way and you are truly only limited by your imagination.

A word of caution is necessary here, however. While there is nothing wrong with combining different images to create a separate one, please be very careful about employing artificial frames on identifiable scenes and landscapes.

This is an extreme example of this warning; don't frame the Statue of Liberty by the St. Louis Arch. The picture will not look right unless your purpose is to create dissonance within your viewers' minds.

So, the next time you are ready to take your shot, look around and see if there is an object nearby that you can use as a natural frame. I recommend that you try to take a picture without the frame, and another one with the frame, and then compare the two. Chances are, you will like the one with the frame better!

What to Look for in iPod nano Holders

By Lydia Vaughn

Congratulations on your new iPod nano! You're going to enjoy it. There's a couple accessories you'l want though, and the first is usually an iPod nano holder. Here's some tips to help you get started.

There's a wider variety of nano cases then you might expect, in a variety of stiles. You might find choosing a case more complicated than you planned.

At the low-price range you'll find silocone film coverings, faux leather flip cases, and all sorts of plastic belt clips. Beyond that you'll see workout holders, fashion beauties, and wind/weather protectors.

How will the iPod nano fit into your life?

Take a minute to think through your day. When do you want your nano? Would you like background music in the house when you're starting your day? Maybe you want music for your workouts. Do you plan to listen to podcasts on the bus (train, plane)? How about when you'r driving? Will you be outside much? Are you (like me) likely to drop the nano and want it protected?

Most people actually need a couple types of holders. I have an armband I wear while working out that I love, but use a different holder the rest of the day.

The Workout:

When working out you need to protect it from drops, bumps, and bangs. You'll want easy access to the iPod nano without it getting in the way. Most exercisers use an armband.

I prefer a sweat-resistant armband, to protect it from moisture. My Belkin neoprene armband has a clear film over the display and a clip-on cord keeper. The only problem is I can't easily see what I'm doing when I change playlists.

If you don't like armbands, make sure your holder has a slip-proof cover. I like a silicone iPod nano exterior, especially one that's thick enough to progect against bumps and drops.

Commuting to Work

I used to be a consultant for a Fortune 100 company. Appearance was important, and details mattered. If you need a put-together image you should go for a leather cover. They come in flip-top or wallet fold styles, and look sleek and professional. My favorite is real leather, fits the nano tightly, and has a velvet lining to protect against scratching.

If a conservative image doesn't matter, I'm jealous. Read the next paragraphs to decide what level of practicality or style is right for you.

Being Practical:

If you'll be outside much you might consider waterproof cases. Also think about whether you need a belt clip or perhaps a snap to help you keep track of the case.

If you travel, have a hectic life, or will be dropping the iPod nano to the bottom of your purse/briefcase/bag you should consider a hard case. You could also get a softer case with reinforced corners to protect the nano.

Going for style:

Most nano owners are more worried about practical stuff. Some of us like to look good with the nano as well. You can get designer cases, cases with Swarovski crystal accents, even cases made with high-energy prints. My website has a review of designer iPod nano holders to give you some ideas.

Know what you want now? Go forth and buy! If you're still not quite sure, stop by my website for a few ideas. Whatever you decide, you'll enjoy your new iPod 3G nano.

Photography: Skills For the Future

By Fabian Toulouse

Most people think that photography did not come about until the mid-1800s, and in a sense, they are right, but many discoveries that made today's photography possible came far earlier. The first camera invented, in fact, was a pinhole camera made by Ibn al Haytham (965-1040). The important discovery of silver nitrate by Albertus Magnus came in the 13th century, followed later by silver chloride. In 1694, the photochemical effect of light on chemicals was earliest described by Wilhelm Homberg.

All of these contributions led to the development of photography in the 19th century. In 1826, the very first enduring photograph was made by Nicephore Niepce. Just in time for soldiers going off to the American Civil War, commercial photography was in its infancy. All the boys going off to fight wanted to leave behind a tiny tintype or ambrotype for his family or special girl. Though there are only very rare action photographs from the war, the Civil War has the illustrious distinction of being our first conflict with a photographic record.

As photography advanced, more careers opened up, and it also became a hobby for thousands of curious folks worldwide. Newspapers needed photographers, magazines were inaugurated to showcase photography, photographers were always wanted for family portraits. In the 21st century there are any number of careers for photographers, from crime scene investigation work to news to work in NASA or other scientific arenas. Photographers circle the globe capturing every facet of human culture as well as animal and plant life. They witness natural beauty at which the rest of us can only sit home and marvel.

Anyone with an interest, however, can practice photography for themselves, today. With distance education courses, education is fun and convenient. The coursework can teach you all aspects of the field, whether you use a digital or 35 mm camera.

You don't even have a career in mind, you can simply pick courses that will help you take better pictures of your kids or photograph the spider webs that cover your garden in the morning light. Whatever your intent, photography is a good skill to learn.

How Liquid Dancing Came To Be

By Chris Channing

Much like the name would suggest, liquid dancing is a dance form that simulates a very fluid type motion. Liquid dancing often incorporates funk, interpretive dancing, and even some aspects of the breakdance moves that have become popular over the decades.

It has long been debated as to what exactly liquid dancing is. Many claim that it is just other styles of dances with a few tricks mixed in. Others say that the dance type is a style in all its own, as it originates from the club era and has true roots in dancing history. Either way, the dancing style is defined as borrowing moves from other styles, so in effect both sides of the debate could be true.

Liquid dancing is simple enough to get down in theory, but actually going about doing the dance when in the midst of others can prove to be a task in itself. Liquid dancing focuses on being in tune with rhythm, in which case just reading about the dance moves will do little for those who wish to practice the acclaimed dancing style. Without the rhythm in check, it's said that liquid dancing is not being performed.

Out of all the moves in liquid dancing, there are a few that hold to be the most popular when practicing a common liquid dance routine. The "build" move, for instance, is much like the mime type moves that incorporate interacting with abstract objects. Other moves such as the "wave" makes use of the arms and body to simulate the same moving motion found in sporting event crowds, albeit less obnoxious.

For those who don't seem to gain enough attention from their dancing routine via liquid dancing will often accommodate their dancing style with lighting- such as glowsticks. Although it is quite popular among liquid dancers to incorporate glowsticks into their routines, many modern clubs and the like will not allow such items for fear of injury and dispute concerns. Glowsticking has thus become less common in the club scene, but it still remains to be a very popular rave and party dance style.

When it comes to actually learning about the ins and outs of glowsticking, liquid dancing, and the dancing styles that are used in liquid dancing, it is important to consult videos of some nature. Videos will allow one to repeat steps and moves that are very visual oriented. Simply reading about such moves will do little to give hopeful liquid dancers a healthy introduction into the dancing style. Getting online videos or videos from the local rental store can prove to be a cheap and yet effective way to learn an entire dancing style within days.

Final Thoughts

In the end, the common rave party or trance scene wouldn't be what they are today without the smooth moves obtained in passing on the techniques of the liquid dancing maneuvers. There is much to learn in the technique, but much will be found on one's one as creativity and inspiration comes from the rhythms in music, others around the person in question, and the lighting environment of the party or club. Keep in mind that to truly master the dancing style, practice makes perfect.

Tattoos And The Prevention Of Infection

By Mike Wamoult

While a person is getting a tattoo, the skin secretes a fluid that forms droplets on the surface. Now, normally the blood particles in the fluid would dry on the surface and would look like black specs. If left alone and no bothered or picked at they will attach themselves along with particles and then they dry and form what you know as a scab. Eventually though the skin will heal in spite of the obstacles created. If this process gets disturbed then you are going to have to deal with healing an infected tattoo.

If the damage that occurs to the skin is minimal in nature, then the rate of healing will usually depend on the level of moisture present in the area. Certain healing ointments can create the needed atmosphere for proper healing and they are: Bacitracin Zinc, A & D Ointment and Petroleum. The petroleum content in these products means that neither air nor water penetrates to the skin surface and this then creates the optimal healing condition.

When a tattoo has just been finished, no oozing occurs and the skin surface is still dry one way or the other. The application of a petroleum based product would mean the appearance of droplets of fluid because of the body's production of exudates. Exudates are needed in order to create an environment which tends to help with the quick healing of tattoos. Wounds which are maintained in a moist environment with exudates tend to suffer lesser chances of getting infected than dry wounds.

It was formerly thought that petroleum based ointments affected a tattoo in a negative manner by causing the ink to dissolve from the skin but scientific research has proven that this fact is not true. The constant application of antibacterial medication is also not good for the healing process. You can apply ointment and plastic wrapping to your tattoo when you go to sleep or go to bathe for a number of days as this will help protect your tattoo under these circumstances.

Sometimes tattoo infection tends to occur for various reasons. Some of the symptoms which may mean that your tattoo is infected are listed as follows: Increased pain, swelling, redness, heat, or tenderness around the tattoo, red streaks extending from the area, pus coming from the wound, swollen or tender lymph nodes, or fever. These are all indications of the presence of an infection.

Infection usually starts at the tattoo and the usually clear or clear-yellow fluid which tends to drain from an infected tattoo may change to creamy yellow, brown, or red or look or start to smell like pus. It is also possible for infection to occur deep inside the wound without any signs on the surface. However pain and swelling may develop and this will be a definite sign that you have to heal the infected tattoo.

In certain other cases, the skin over a tattoo could heal but an infection could still reside in the depths of the wound thereby creating more serious situations such as an abscess. Neglecting to take care of this abscess properly may result in it becoming septic and infecting the whole body.

Antibiotics are usually needed to heal an infected tattoo but a doctor might also recommend blood tests as well and suggest that the infected tattoo be kept as dry as possible. Water tends to affect healing tattoos adversely.

The Areas Where Tattoos Are Least Likely to Hurt

By Mike Wamoult

Most people who want to get a tattoo consider the area of the body where they would like to get a tattoo and where it would probably hurt the most and where it wouldn't. This is a rather usual consideration and it isn't that easy to answer because people differ in terms of how they are structured and how they handle pain.

Most agree that the arm is the absolute easiest place to get a tattoo. Basically places that contain the most muscle will absorb the needle better and as a result will be the places which will hurt the least. The places that hurt more than usual are areas of either high nerve concentration, erogenous zones like inner thigh or areas right over bone like the ankle.

Some areas which hurt a lot such as the ribcage are usually chosen by those who have a lot more experience in getting tattoos, if it is your first tattoo and you are rather uncomfortable with the prospect of having to bear pain, you can stick with getting tattoos on fleshier locations such as your arm or your leg. When getting tattoos, you should try your best not to concentrate on where tattoos will hurt the most but how great your artwork will look on you when it is finished.

Whether a tattoo will hurt or not is due to a number of factors but usually the less sensitive the skin in the particular location is, the less the tattoo will hurt you. Those who get tattoos tend to describe the experience as one which feels sort of irritating due to the fact that it feels like repeated pin pricks. In terms of pain , those who have the experience claim that these less sensitive areas are those which are usually exposed more to external elements.

Sometimes the amount of pain that you will experience while getting your tattoo will depend on the artist. Some are heavy handed which will make the pain more intense but others are so graceful when giving a tattoo that you walk away thinking you went for a walk in the park.

Some people might find one experience hurtful but others might just find it only mildly irritating. The amount of pain experienced will also largely depend on individual pain tolerance levels and some people are more likely to be sensitive to pain than other people.

A lot of people have compared the pain of getting tattoo with a case of bad sunburn or being stung by bees but it is important to not that the pain does not necessarily last as long as most of these conditions. The way you feel physically as a person will determine the way you take the tattooing process.

If you are having a bad day you might want to hold off the idea of getting a tattoo, the thing is that if you feel distracted or aggravated, you are really going to get pissed off when you get started with your tattoo.

Exposure Factors For Beginners in Photography

By Robert Sullivan

Whether it's a snapshot or fine art photography, exposure of a picture is depends on how much light registers on the media (film or digital camera sensor) that gathers that light. The correct exposure of a picture is a product of the three factors that control how much light is gathered: aperture, Iso, and shutter speed. When these three variables are in the proper ratios, the proper exposure of pictures will result.

The measure of how sensitive the film or digital sensor is that is collecting the light is referred to as ISO. If the ISO number is lower, this means that the sensitivity is lower, and if the ISO is a higher number then the media is more sensitive to light.

The size of the hole that light passes through in the lens is called the aperture. Just like the pupil of the eye, the larger the hole, or aperture, the more light can enter through the lens and onto the media capturing it. Aperture is epressed as a ratio of focal length the size of the hole as adjusted by the diaphragm and is stated as f/(aperture value). If the aperture is f/2.8 it means that the focal length of the lens is 2.8 times the opening of the diaphragm. The smaller the aperture number, the larger the hole in the diaphragm. The larger the aperture number is, like f/8, the smaller the hole in the diaphragm.

Shutter speed is the easiest of the three variables to understand. It is as simple as it sounds. This is the amount of time that the shutter is open to collect light. The longer the shutter is opened, the more light is allowed to pass through the lens to be collected.

These three variables have other implications associated with them that can be a hinderance or can be used to your creative benefit when they are understood and properly applied.

The ISO setting is usually the first variable that is set and is normally the last variable to be changed because of the increase in film grain or digital noise the higher the ISO is set. For this reason, photographers usually use the lowest ISO possible to keep the noise and grain to a minimum. Sometimes, however, digital noise and film grain are used purposefully to create a desired outcome in the photograph.

Changing the opening in the diameter of the diaphragm changes how much light passes through the lens and onto the light catching media whether it is film or a digital sensor. When changing the aperture the focus in the image captured is also changed. Smaller apertures such as f/8 and f/16 will result in more area in focus between foreground and background. Called depth of field, this is very important in the capturing of an image. Bigger apertures like f/1.8 and f2.8 narrow the depth of field so that most everything in the final picture will out of focus. This helps to highlight the subject in a dramatic way by leaving the subject in focus while distracting foreground and backgrounds remain out of focus.

Varying the length of time that the shutter is open will control how much light passes through the lens opening. This is called shutter speed. The longer the shutter remains open the more light will be collected by the sensor or film. Shutter speed also affects motion blur or lack of. When the shutter is open for longer periods, the moving parts of the image will begin to blur and the amount of blur increases the longer the shutter is open. Otherwise, opening the shutter for a shorter period of time results in freezing everything in the image in place. Faster moving objects require faster shutter speeds to capture them without motion blur, but less light is allowed through the lens when the shutter is opened for less time.

When these three variables are set properly, a properly exposed image will result. Once set properly, a change in one of the variables will require a change in at least one of the other variables to compensate. This is because changing only one of the variables will increase or decrease the amount of light that lands on the film or sensor or affect the sensitivity of that film or sensor. Increasing the sensitivity, or ISO, of the sensor or film will result in an overexposed photograph if the light landing on that sensor or film is not reduced by increasing the shutter speed or decreasing the aperture. Increasing the shutter speed to freeze a rodeo rider will result in an underexposed photograph unless the size of the aperture is increased to allow more light in or the ISO is increased which results in more sensitivity to the decreased amount of light.

These three variables determine the exposure of the final photograph. And because of the side effects associated with these variables, a knowledgeable photographer knows what his desired result is and will determine each of these settings prior to pressing the shutter release button.

Music & Guitar

By Elijah Fynn

One of the most recognizable instruments in today's modern culture is the guitar. It is not surprising then, that it is also one of the most commonly available instruments to play.

Also, this music forms the base for many different kinds of songs in the modern music culture of today. The guitar has been in the culture of humanity as early as the 1500's.

Some guitars have a thicker string on the fretboard, such as a bass guitar. There are also acoustic, classical, and electric guitars. Some guitars have a hollow body while others have a solid body.

There is even a great variation in the sounds of a guitar, depending on which guitar form you are playing. You shouldn't decide the lead based on the guitar, but rather on the way the guitar is being played.

The rhythm in a song is usually played by a bass guitarist. You can refer to the rhythm as the beat of the music. Next to this, is the melody.

This is what gives the music a particular character. This is the part that you would normally remember and later identify with. This is usually done with the help of the lead guitar which is most commonly an electric guitar.

There are different ways that a lead guitarist can produce the melody. It may include fills or even riffs. These are terms you will be familiar with as you progress in your guitar skill.

If you are new to guitar, this may be your first set of lessons too. Your teacher, be it on a DVD set or in person, may ask you to follow along and try out some chords.

Your guitar playing ability will improve with practice. Just think of all the people around the world, who take up lessons each and every day.

Some of the best music we know, consists of a guitar melody. How would you like to be that guitar player? If you stick with your practice, you will be a great player.

If you are a lonely kind of person, you may find comfort in playing a guitar. It is something about the strings on the instrument which make people feel better. Being able to play a song can truly help your mood.

Photography Courses: Improve Your Shots

By Fabian Toulouse

From a pretty early age, most people enjoy taking pictures. It is fun to capture the the people and places you love on film. Most people never get serious about photography. They are satisfied to have a camera that lets them take decent shots, and they take it in stride when a head gets cut off or an image is too bright. Others, however, are perturbed with their inability to make their shots turn out like the rich photographs in coffee table books. They want more from their cameras, possibly even a career.

Photography is a great career that affords a wide variety of jobs. Magazines and newspapers need photographers. Photojournalists work on stories all around the country and the best go around the world. There are jobs in police departments for photographers with an interest in forensic science. Lots of photographers love shooting gorgeous portraits or photographing weddings. Still other photographers raise their skill to an artistic level.

Taking classes in photography is a logical place to begin, but such classes are not only for those who want to work professionally. Lots of people take classes just to learn how to work their sophisticated cameras, to figure out how to take incredible pictures of their kids, or to learn how to use software programs for working with digital images. A lot goes into taking high quality photographs, and a photography class is beneficial to anyone hoping to improve his or her skills.

A photography school can teach you about the elements of lighting, framing, form, and structure. You will learn what all those knobs on your camera do, and if you like digital photography, you can study how to use software programs. You do not even have to leave your home to take classes--there are classes offered through the internet. The course material is richly illustrated with professional, you get great feedback on your photographs, and you can learn curled up on your couch with your dog.

If you are not satisfied with your photographs, or if you think it would be cool to be a professional photographer, why not look into photography courses? The results can be beautiful!

And You Thought Becoming Famous Was Hard? Think Again!

By Rick London

When I got home last night I grabbed the remote and turned on a cable news program. I was busy in the kitchen and couldn't see the screen but I heard a voice that I remembered always sent chills down my spine. I walked into the living room and sure enough, staring me in the face, swastika on forehead, cigarette in hand, was Charles Manson.

I had to look twice. I shouldn't have been so surprised they had given him yet another Andy Warhol 15 minutes; I worked in news for nearly two decades before saying "enough is enough" as I saw it going in a direction in which valuable camera-time was being handed over to the infamous, rather than the famous; and often the famous had worked hard and been productive all their lives to get where they were. In other words, sensationalism was winning out over positive broadcasting. I am not saying stories of such notorious characters should not be mentioned or remembered. It is important to remember the Holocaust. It is important to remember Hilter; and for obvious reasons. It serves the educational process. Media can have a powerful effect on teaching a government, a citizenry, an entire nation on how not to repeat the errors of the past.

So I said to myself, "Okay, maybe it is time for Charlie to show his mug to remind us what we don't want to be. The problem I had with the program was he was given an entire hour of nothing but his predictable rambling. He was having a blast. The media was showing the world, "Look, doing something crazy like brainwash people into killing other people, and you two, a half century later, can still be a big celebrity." And that is exactly what was happening. I kept thinking to myself, why couldn't this cable news program dedicate a full hour to a captain of industry such as Bill Gates or Michael Dell or the founders of Google who do so much good in the world. I could have even tolerated another Donald/Rosie fight over Charlie's mug; or pretended like I cared about "Barbara Walter's torrid sex life" now being broadcast from here to eternity due to her new kiss and tell book. But I digress.

Manson was allegedly driven by fame. Did you know he (and Steven Stills) both tried out for the 60's band "The Monkees" when they were forming?

Manson, I do not believe, was on Andy Warhol's mind when he was telling us how to get our 15 minutes of fame. He knew the steps, and none of them required any evil or violence.

Do you want your 15 minutes? Do you want fame? Freud said something drives everyone. What drives you? Maybe it is not fame. Maybe it is money. Maybe it is doing good in the world. Maybe it is having money and doing good in the world with it. Whatever it is, chances are, you are willing to work for it.

As a cartoonist and writer, I have had way more than my 15 minutes, and I am grateful for it. I have been able to help other people, animals, and environmental causes, and do things I never dreamed I could do.

Hard work is the key. If you come to expect that, the steps are simple.

What is your dream? If you are not sure, write down several and choose one that seems to fit you best.

Ask questions of others who have already achieved similar dreams. Take notes. Take more notes. Ask more questions. Act. Act more. Take yet more action. Keep open to learning.

Use the Internet to accelerate that dream. Andy Warhol and his friends Marilyn Monroe and so many others did not have the luxury of the Internet. Norma Jean never had a blog and Andy did no social networking. You can. You can learn article marketing. Do it. Don't stop with just a few articles. Find the top Ezines and stay at it.

Learn this work habit and repeat it daily. Don't slack up when you see a little success come your way. Work that much harder. Suddenly you are a name brand. You should pat yourself on the back. Hard work but well worth it, eh?

Issues That Abound With Confederate Flag Tattoos

By Mike Wamoult

People see confederate flag tattoos in different lights; some see it as a source of pride, especially those from the Southern part on the United States. Other people see it as a symbol of racism and a symbol of shame but it really is a matter of choice. The first rebel flags of the Confederate States of America were flown between 1861 and 1865.

For a person proud of the Southern Heritage and who doesn't feel that such flags are racist in any form, you might want to get rebel flag tattoos as an indication of your pride. These tattoos will also share your feelings and beliefs with other people in a way that wearing a traditional Stars and Stripes tattoo would.

It is often normal for most Confederate Flag tattoos to be of the simple kind but different individual styles as well as innovations in design have allowed people to make them more complex and personal. Incorporating personal elements in your Confederate flag tattoo may have to do with lettering or design.

You should think about some things before you decide to get a confederate flag tattoo because it is very possible that it could be on display often due to the location of your body you get tattooed. It may also be possible that your tattoo is misconstrued in a racist light. Most people find Confederate images highly controversial and link them with the death of many Americans as well as slavery. While Southern Pride may be on your mind, others might not share your views.

If you seek a beautiful Confederate flag design for personal use, you have to be absolutely sure that it is something that you are ready to live with for the remainder of your life. Whatever your decision, tattoos always seem to be attractive to the opposite sex , if you really decide to get the tattoo anyway you might want to visit a tattoo parlor and look at catalogs to see the designs they have available.

As soon as you have made the decision on the particular Confederate flag tattoo that you want and where you want to place it on your body, you should be prepared to face the controversy that surrounds it especially if your tattoo is located in a prominent place. It would usually be advised that you apply a bit of common sense before you place this tattoo in a prominent location.

A tattoo of a cross usually indicates a strong religious conviction except when it is depicted in a manner contrary to this view. The tattoo of the American flag usually connotes strong pride for America and a patriotic spirit. A Confederate flag tattoo usually symbolizes a person's pride in the South and might be seen as an indication of prejudice against African Americans.

If you seriously do intend on getting a Confederate flag tattoo, it would be wise to take notice o the listed tattoo advice here and this will ensure that you get a tattoo design that you are really sure of in order to mirror your patriotism and love for Southern history.

Taking the pain out of buying a musical instrument online

By Niki

Today, savvy buyers are looking online for places to buy everything from groceries to musical instruments. Here's some help in making wise decisions regarding your online musical-instrument purchases.

Today's Internet-savvy buyers are heading online to purchase all manner of goods and services - ranging from buying birthday gifts to getting their weekly groceries delivered. Even musical instruments. Looking to buy an instrument (either for yourself, a loved one - or as a gift)? Then you should be aware of a few things before you get out that credit card.

Know your instruments - The first thing you need to know is what kind of instrument you want: are you looking for a stringed instrument? Woodwind? Brass? Percussion? Before you buy, it's important to know what you're getting. You may want to do some research before you buy - and learn which features you can expect in each instrument you're considering. After you've decided on a type of instrument (for instance, a stringed instrument), it's time to narrow it down to a specific one. Stringed instruments include violins, violas, cellos, bass, banjos, mandolins and guitars.

Using the example of a guitar Are you looking for a six-string guitar or a twelve-string model? Do you want acoustic or electric? If Pete Townsend's your guitar-playing idol, maybe you want a guitar with a whammy bar just like Pete's. The choices are practically endless.

Be brand aware - As you're researching prospective instruments, don't overlook various brand names. Know what you want; or, if the instrument you're buying is a gift, it's a good idea to know what the recipient wants.

Maybe Junior's been wishing for a simple Walden D351 acoustic guitar. If so, you don't want to assume he'd be just as happy with the Schecter Hellraiser C1 electric. That puppy might be more guitar than he can handle. It's best to know beforehand what Junior really wants - to avoid the hassle of having to return the unwanted item and then order the one he wanted all along not to mention disappointing the little tyke on his big day.

We've touched on guitars, but suppose you're looking for a different stringed instrument, like a banjo, mandolin, ukulele or harp - or a less-common instrument, like crystal flutes or piccolos or hand drums. With these, the same rules apply: Be aware of various brands of musical instruments available to you; know the intended recipient - and know which features you're looking for in an instrument.

Know your dealer - When buying online, you should work with a dealer you can trust, especially if you don't know a Walden from a Schecter or a Schmidt. You need to have a dealer on your side, one who won't steer you to a higher-priced model simply to make a few extra bucks.

Reliable merchants know a few dollars' profit isn't worth jeopardizing a potential long-term relationship with someone who might end up being a repeat customer. Find yourself a knowledgeable and reputable dealer who'll help you find just what you're looking for.

And remember: if you've got questions about a particular brand or model of instrument, ask. A responsible dealer will welcome the opportunity to educate and inform you about the different options available to you. Even if you think it might be a stupid question, ask it anyway. The truth is, there are no stupid questions, only unasked ones. And unasked questions don't ever get answered. And that doesn't help anybody.

When looking online for musical instruments, you can't do better than the pros at Fortuna Music Mart. They carry a full variety of stringed instruments (banjos, bass, mandolins, guitars and ukuleles), a selection of crystal flutes and piccolos and hand drums - as well as Kustom-brand amplifiers. For more information about Fortuna Music Mart, visit them online at www.FortunaMusicMart.com.

Guitar & Its Types

By Elijah Fynn

A large number of people around the world play different musical instruments. It is a passion that people have taken up as a profession or just a hobby. This differs from person to person.

You may have started playing as a child or perhaps your interest sparked due to seeing someone else play. Whatever the case may be, there are many instruments to choose from, including piano, guitars, drums, etc...

If you want an instrument that is easy to play, then you want a guitar. Keep in mind that it is also difficult to learn though. You can get the basics down, but advancing in skill will take lots of practice.

Your first guitar lessons may include a quick overview of chord theory. From there, you will be able to strum a few different chords.

Guitar has a few different pickup types. They include:

1. Acoustic Guitar: this guitar is used when you want to increase the sound output and not have any true tone. The choice selection doesn't offer much.

2. Hum Bucker: these types of guitars are well known for producing powerful tones. These guitars are well suited to play any type of tone. You can easily play hard rock or blues music with the help of this guitar type.

3. Single Coil; a great beginner's guitar for sure. The Stratocaster by Fender is a perfect example of this.

There are thousands of websites which can help you narrow down the best choice of guitar for your own needs. Picking the right instrument isn't rocket science, it just takes a bit of time.

I would suggest that you try learning the blues scale if you are new to guitar. It will help your finger movement and also help you get a sense of tone and how it works together. Most people who play guitar like the blues scale.

If you are stuck on the blues scale, seek some help from others. Ask about hand position as this is where you may be lacking.

Mary Poppins, An Oscar-Winning Classic

By Steve Collins

Mary Poppins is the much-loved musical produced by Walt Disney and starring Julie Andrews. Released in 1964, the film was based on the best-selling children's book written by P.L. Travers and illustrated by Mary Shepard. It enjoyed extraordinary success when it was released, and was ranked by the American Film Institute as the 6th best musical of all time, just above A Star Is Born and below Cabaret.

The plot centers on the title character, the magical nanny, Mary Poppins. It's Spring, 1910, and Mary, played luminously by Julie Andrews, has come to the aid of the Banks family. She hopes to be the last in a long line of nannies for the Banks children, Jane, played by Karen Dotrice, and Michael, played by Matthew Garber. Soon the children are whisked away on magical adventures that include a countryside adventure and a tea party in midair. The plot thickens when Mr. Dawes, the employer of the Banks patriarch, tries to persuade Michael to invest his money with the bank. Michael refuses, causing a run on the bank and endangering his father's position at the bank. In the ensuing hullabaloo, the children flee into the East End, where they meet with Mary's long-time friend Bert, played to the hilt by Dick Van Dyke. The children eventually apologize to their father, and Michael offers to give his tuppence to Mr. Dawes, causing the reserved and distant Mr. Banks, played by David Tomlinson, to soften towards his children. Needless to say they all live happily ever-after.

The first story by P.L. Travers was the inspiration for the film's plot. Walt Disney personally tried to secure the right to the book as early as 1938. Travers originally refused, believing an animated version of her books would sully her creative work. In 1961, he finally secured the rights when he offered Travers final script approval.

The film was released on August 27, 1964 to rave reviews. In fact, it garnered 13 Academy Awards nominations, winning Oscars for Best Actress, Best Film Editing, Original Music Score, Best Song, and Special Visual Effects. To this day, Mary Poppins is considered by many critics to be the best Disney live-action musical ever made.

This was Julie Andrews' first Oscar win. She was first passed over by Jack Warner for the lead in My Fair Lady, a role she made popular on Broadway, but was swiftly given the role of Mary Poppins. Her co-star, Dick Van Dyke, was cast as Bert because of his ability to play broad, near-slapstick comedy. Though he is much loved in the film, he has long been criticized for attempting the worst Cockney accent in film history. Van Dyke acknowledges this fact on the 2004 DVD commentary track.

Digital Photography an in depth Look

By Dan Feildman

Digital technology has been the reason for the ease of access in a number of areas made available to people today. Many noteworthy inventions were designed to make it easier for people to complete whatever their jobs entail. One example of this extraordinary breakthrough is in digital photography, through better ease and comfort in capturing pictures of any type.

What digital photography means? Digital photography connotes different things depending on how the people interpret it. Some people perceive digital photography as something which converts a traditional photo into digital format by simply using a scanner. Others interpret it as something that is done by means of a traditional picture taken from film and digitize it through the computer. While others see it as something captured digitally by means of a digital camera.

Typically, digital photography simply defined is a type of photography that does not necessitate film. The fact that you do not have to wait for the picture in order for it to be printed is music to the ears of the one taking the photo. Once you take pictures using a digital camera, the image can be transferred quickly from the camera to the computer. Right away you can view your picture on the monitor and preview the image to make sure the image quality is good and the color is precise. All you have to do is delete the image and retake the picture if at first you do not get the photo you want.

Because of the great features of digital photography, many people now are considering buying a digital camera. Why are there so many people turning to digital photos? It's simply because digital photos allows you to use your imagination. You can modify the look and feel of the image without much effort. You can change the background or add a text to the picture to make it more personalized. Whatever it is that you want for your photo, you can have it when it's digitally captured.

Digital cameras allow you to repair or enhance the image quality of your photographs. You can edit, or restore your photo according to what you want your picture to be. Plus, all of these can be done efficiently at home.

How can digital photography fix the image quality of a certain photo? To guarantee that your photo gets the best image quality, check the setting of your digital camera before snapping your shot. If the image is already in your computer, simply check out the image on the computer screen to confirm if your image has the highest image quality.

Repairing the image quality of a digital photograph frequently involves quite a few elements such as the colors and the contrast. The contrast is significant if you want to get the finest result in your photos. To add life to your photos, you can improve the image quality by adjusting its colors. There are endless options offered by digital photography to ensure beautiful pictures.

All of the capabilities of digital photography are yet to be discovered. Some of the issues being perfected involve the ideas of the image quality, cost of production, the options of digital cameras and other features. All of these are being developed in order to make digital photography obtainable by everyone.

Black and White back in Fashion

By David Peters

Black and white photography has always been powerful and it has stood the test of time, even against its contemporary color counterpart. When working with black and white, you must incorporate a different set of rules and techniques. With the lack of color the balances of shape and contrast are made to work harder in order to convey the story or set the mood. However, once this is achieved it is striking.

While some digital cameras have a black and white mode available, if yours does not, black and white is still possible. Many photographers would agree that it is actually easier to make the shot in color, converting over to black and white in editing. The Photoshop program has a variety of techniques to make this conversion over to black and white or as the program refers to it as grayscale. The degree to which the subtleties can be altered is dramatic.

The simplest way of changing color to black and white is to switch the mode to grayscale (Image > Mode > Grayscale). While this can work, there are other methods to use. Lets take a look at three other alternatives that will convert color to grayscale (black and white):

Desaturation is the first method.. This is the elimination the observable color information while keeping the RGB status of the file. This would permit you to add a tint at a later time without having to change color mode again. Follow Steps: Image > Adjustments > Desaturate (or press Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + U).

One negative outcome of desaturation is potentially a flat, uninspiring 'shell' of the original picture. This can be improved on however by looking at the picture in parts. You can increase textures in one area by darkening the shadows and midtones, or increase contrast in another to remove haziness. To do this, take a feathered section to work with and press Ctrl/Cmd + J to copy and paste the selection to a new layer. Add a 'Levels Adjustment Layer' to it, combining the two layers as a clipping mask. Drag the Black and Gray point markers toward the right to bring out texture or to the left to decrease. If you see a dividing line after making the Levels adjustment, remove by adding a layer mask to the newly made level (set to Reveal All) and paint on the mask in black until the edge disappears using a soft brush at a low opacity setting.

While a Levels adjustment layer would add contrast, a different method would be: Follow Steps: Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Curves This will add a Curves adjustment layer to the background layer. Apply the curve shown to increase midtone contrast, but at slight decrease to the highlights and shadows, however this lessens the haziness effect.

Imagine a photo of the sky. Going to the Layers palette, click the Channels tab, then click on the Red channel. The image seen be the darkening of the blue-tinted areas the same result that a red filter over the lens would have created. For a comparison, click on the Green channel for a result similar to the Red channel but less pronounced. Last, look at the Blue channel, it will be lighter, since most of the image is blue. With only some simple clicks, we have three different ready-made black-and-white effects.

After choosing the filter effect you desire, use this keyboard shortcut sequence to make it into a new document: Ctrl/Cmd + A (selects all) Ctrl/Cmd + C (copies the selection to the clipboard) Ctrl/Cmd + N (creates a new document of the same proportions as whatever we have on the clipboard. The document will also be a grayscale as we only have one channel selected) Enter/Return (to confirm the settings. No changes are necessary) Ctrl/Cmd + V (to paste the contents of the clipboard to a new layer) You can then use Levels and Curves to fine-tune the result.

Use this method if the automatic setting of the channels are not what you are looking for in order to increase the range of tones or strengthen the color effects. Choose the channel you want and while keeping it active go to Image > Calculations. If the Red channel was active, the Red channel will appear in the Calculations dialog box. Source 1 and 2 are set to the same document, layer, and Red channel, which means they will all be combined for the calculation to take place. Set the blending drop-down to Multiply, working in the same way as the normal layer blend methods. Multiply will darken the image, but based on the red channel. As a result blue elements or elements with a blue cast will become darker than other elements. Set the Result drop-down box to New Document to create a new multichannel file based on the calculated result.

Painting Tools of Photoshop

By Dan Feildman

Both painting and erasing are simple with Photoshop. The painting tools in Photoshop are a fundamental part of just about anything you can do with this program. Not only can you paint in color, you can also make selections, create transparency and much, much more. Let's take a look at just a few of the more widely used tools in Photoshop such as the pencil, line, paintbrush, airbrush, eraser, paint bucket, and gradient tools, their functions, and their differences.

You can't paint without a brush. Photoshop 5, finds brushes in a floating palette, while Photoshop 6, the brushes palette are attached to the option bar as a drop-down menu. Many brushes are available from the standard to additional ones from the Photoshop CD. The shape, hardness, and spacing of the round brushes can be tailored, and you can also create your own custom brushes from any option that allow you to adjust sizing. The brushes palette menu allows you to reset, save and load brushes. What are some basic brush palette functions? Photoshop 5: If you want to make a new brush without changing an existing brush, choose New Brush from the palette flyout menu. Double clicking on a brush permits you to modify the diameter, hardness, spacing, angle, and roundness while it changes that brush in your brushes palette. To rotate through the brushes in the palette while painting, use the bracket keys [ and ] to cycle through the brushes in your palette. Holding the shift key down while pressing the bracket keys will take you to the first or last brush in the palette. Photoshop 6: When you make adjustments to a brush you can click the preset button to add it to the brushes palette. You can also choose New Brush from the palette flyout menu to make a new custom brush. Clicking on the brush preview in the options bar allows you to change the diameter, hardness, spacing, angle, and roundness. To adjust the brush size on-the-fly while painting, use the bracket keys [ and ]. Holding the shift key down while pressing the bracket keys will adjust the hardness of the brush. Try out the brush options and experiment with them for feel. You can return to the default brushes at any time by choosing reset brushes from the brush palette menu.

Now let's add that color. The most frequently used tools are the paintbrush and the airbrush. The airbrush tool works more like a traditional airbrush or spray paint. Its shortcut key is J. The airbrush puts paint on lighter than the paintbrush tool, but when you hold your mouse button down without moving the cursor, the paint builds up just like it would if you were to hold the nozzle down on a can of spray paint. Instead of adjusting the opacity for the airbrush tool, you set the pressure. The higher the pressure is set, the thicker your paint will go on. The airbrush is useful for painting delicate shading and highlights. Paintbrush is most likely the tool you will be using for most projects. The shortcut key is B. The Paintbrush tool applies color to your project much in the way a conventional paintbrush would paint on paper or canvas. Other options in paintbrush include wet edges that applies paint more in the manner of watercolor paint or markers, a fade option in the options palette that can fade the opacity only in Photoshop 5.x, but can also fade the size and color of brush strokes in version 6 and a paintbrush options palette (Version 5.x) and brush dynamic menu (Version 6.0) are where you would go to make changes to the way Photoshop reacts to stylus pressure if you do not have a pressure sensitive tablet (if you do, you'll want to use your tablet's pressure sensitivity to achieve fading).

There are tools offered more intended for drawing. The line tool is used to create straight lines and arrows. In Photoshop 5, the line tool short cut is N and the toolbox location is shared with the Pencil tool. The line width and arrowhead locations can be adjusted through the options palette in Photoshop 5.x. In Photoshop 6, the line tool is shared with the Shapes tool. In the options bar, you can decide whether to create the line as a shape layer, a path, or a filled region. The pencil tool allows you to apply paint color that always has a hard edge (like drawing in color). The shortcut key for the pencil tool is N in Photoshop 5.x. In Photoshop 6, the tool is shared with the Paintbrush and the shortcut key is B. Shift B toggles between the Paintbrush and Pencil tool.

You can "cheat" and fill areas with color at a time. The Paint Bucket is the simplest of these painting tools, used to fill areas with solid color or patterns and works by filling with color based on color likeness chosen by the tolerance setting. The paint bucket has a blending mode menu and opacity control, just like the layers palette, allowing you to change the way the paint blends with the pixels you are painting on the same layer. The Gradient tool allows you to apply graduated color fills that blend from one color to another. Gradients are not just limited to two-colors. You can create custom gradients using several colors and changeable levels of transparency for unlimited effects. The Gradient tool shortcut is G. In Photoshop 5.x, Shift G toggles the five types of gradient fill types. In Photoshop 6, the gradient fill type is selected from the option bar and Shift G toggles between the gradient and paint bucket tools. There are five types of gradients: Linear, Radial, Angle, Reflected, and Diamond. The transparency checkbox enables gradients with transparency; otherwise the transparent areas are filled with the neighboring color. Reverse flips the order of colors in the gradient. You can also use patterns as paint and fills in Photoshop. In version 5, you need to define a pattern every time you want to use a different one. Defining a pattern is simple, just make a choice and choose Edit > Define Pattern. Anytime a pattern is defined, the tools and commands that required a pattern fill will show that option. When you want to use a different pattern, just select it and choose the define pattern command again. In Photoshop 6, pattern fills are selected from a menu of patterns in the options bar. To add a new patterns you just open the image and choose Edit > Define Pattern. Patterns can be used as fills with the paint bucket and the Edit > Fill command. You can also paint with patterns using the Pattern Stamp tool. This tool shares the toolbox location with the rubber stamp tool. The pattern stamp works like a paintbrush, but instead of solid color paint, it paints with the presently chosen pattern. The aligned check box causes your pattern to line up even if you stop one brushstroke and start a new one. When aligned is unchecked, the starting point of the pattern is reset each time you make a new stroke.

Of course we make mistakes, so let's know how to fix them. The eraser tool shortcut is E. The standard eraser tool has four painting modes to choose from: paintbrush, airbrush, pencil, and block. The eraser tool paints in transparency, unless your layer is a background, in which case, the eraser tool paints with the current background color. The eraser tool options are basically the same as the painting tools, with the addition of one new option: Erase to history. When you erase to history, it works just like the history brush. The Magic Eraser works just like the magic wand, but instead of making a selection, it immediately converts the pixels to transparent. The areas to be erased are controlled by adjusting the tolerance and contiguous options. Clicking once erases all the pixels that fall within the tolerance range. If the magic eraser is used on a background layer, the background is involuntarily promoted to a layer. This tool is best for when you have a background that is fairly solid in color. It just takes one click with the magic eraser and your background is gone. The background eraser also erases to transparency, but instead of using only the tolerance range, it continuously samples the background colors in your document as you erase. It's useful for backgrounds that have a range of colors in the background, but where the background colors are still different from the foreground object you want to isolate. It works best with a moderately large brush. The most important thing to remember with this tool is to be very careful to keep the crosshairs away from the object you want to keep. When using this tool, you may notice some bits of the foreground object becoming slightly transparent along the edges. You needn't be terribly concerned with this, because you can always paint those bits back in using the Erase to History option or the History Brush.

There are a few tricks and tips in Photoshop. Photoshop is set to show the painting cursors at the actual brush size. This setting can be changed through your Preferences (under the Edit menu in Photoshop 6; the File menu in Photoshop 5 and earlier.) In most cases you'll want to leave it set to brush size. You can toggle to exact cursors without going through the preferences dialog by locking the caps lock key. Anytime you have a painting tool active, you can press the Alt/Option key to temporarily change to the Eyedropper and pick up a new foreground color from anywhere in the document. You can adjust the pressure of the airbrush tool or the opacity of the other painting tools by pressing the numeric keys on your keyboard instead of going to options. While a painting tool is active you can cycle through the blend modes using Shift -(minus) and Shift (plus). These shortcut keys also rotate through the layer blend modes when non-painting tools are active All the painting tools have the capacity to be faded using the Fade command. In Photoshop 5.x, this command is under the Filter menu. In Photoshop 6.x, it was moved to the Edit menu. After using any paint stroke, fill, or filter, you can select this command to fade it back so it blends with the original pixels. You can also use it to apply a blend mode if you forgot to set the blend mode before applying paint. Now with a little practice, you'll master Photoshop in no time.

Choosing The Right Guitar for Intermediate Players

By Zack R

You are done with your beginner lessons and your beginner's guitar doesn't seem to satisfy you anymore. It might be the time to buy a new one for your new level. It's time to buy a guitar for intermediate players. Buying a guitar for intermediate players is not as nerve racking as the time you bought your first guitar. This is because you already the basics and you already know what you are looking for. However, not because you are already familiar with guitars; you will just grab any guitar that you see from the music store with the thought that you already know how to tune it and play it. Below are some tips to help you with selecting the best guitar for an intermediate player like you:

1. Know what music you would like to play. Now you know the basics, you already know what style of music you are inclined to. The type of guitar that you should buy depends on what style of music you are playing or you would like to play.

2. It should be not too small, not too big. You will probably be playing much more than you did when you were in the beginner level. Thus it is necessary that you feel comfortable with the guitar you are using as you will be using this most of the time. Pick the right size of guitar. You should pick one which is comfortable to play. You probably do not want to mess up with your music just because of uneasiness and discomfort.

3. Listen and compare. The reason why you learned tuning in your basics is for you to learn how to compare sounds. Now you are keener with the guitar sounds so when buying a new guitar, make sure to listen. Try playing different guitars and pick one with the best sound.

Things to Remember

1. Not because you are already in the intermediate level means you will just go for any kind of strings. Check one which will make you feel comfortable playing. Nylon strings are highly recommended.

2. Check if the neck of the guitar is bowed back. If it is, do not buy it as the finger board will be too close to the string. If this is the case, the sound the guitar will be producing will not be pleasing to the ears.

With all the above tips, you are now ready to your next guitar playing level.

HNE Castings requirements to participate in Survivor

By Amy Nutt

It actually takes a little bit of work to get on the list of participants for the show Survivor. First of all, the show announces that it is accepting applications that can be requested through the website and they usually request a photo and a three minute video be mailed in that introduces you to the producers. If they like you, they will call you in for a Hollywood interview, but don't expect them to pay your travel expenses. That comes later if you make it to the semi-finals.

The survivor application that is required for the show is quite extensive and the questions that are asked are very probing. No one knows exactly what it is the producers are looking for. If you look at past shows, you will see that the people are very different from one another, which makes sense. If everyone were exactly the same, then the show would not be the least bit interesting.

Now once in a while there may be open casting calls in some of the major cities around the country. These are casting calls that are open to all members of the public and applications are made available at these casting calls. After the application is filled out, prospects are then placed in front of a camera to see how the camera perceives them. Because of this, it isn't necessary to provide a three-minute tape and it isn't necessary to provide a passport at this point. Many think that they must bring their passport since the show is filmed in various places throughout the world.

Many say the casting calls are fun and that they get to meet a lot of new people. The reason why it is so much fun is because the producers of the show make it that way. As far as whether or not a Survivor applicant needs to meet endurance requirements, that is something that is not a part of the application process. For those who have watched the show in the past, someone may look as if they can endure the toughest of environments when, in fact, they cannot. We've also seen those who may look as if they cannot survive a day, survive for quite some time. That is what makes the show incredibly interesting. What the producers mainly look for are those who look good in front of the camera, can pass a psychological exam enough to be not be deemed a harm to themselves or others, and that they just might be interesting to those at home who are watching.

It is suggested that those wanting to be on the show should be familiar with it since it can be rather physically and emotionally demanding. Watching previous seasons and seeing the types of conditions the Survivor contestants have endured can make or break the decision to be on the show. It is important to know that it is not easy and that it is not an act. When these people are miserable, they are miserable. When it is raining and they are muddy, they didn't go and splash the mud on themselves. When a contestant walks into the ocean naked, they are literally walking into the ocean naked. All inhibitions are put aside in desperate situations and that is something that needs to be realized when filling out the participant application. It is also important to be creative in the application process and get the attention of the producers. If the producers ask what three things you would take on the island with you, "shelter, food, and water" are certainly not the correct answers.

1. Decide on the type of guitar. This is the first thing you should have in your mind before going to the music store. Decide on the type of guitar you would like to learn and master. There are many types of guitar. You can choose from classical guitar, flamenco guitar, acoustic guitar, base and electric guitar. This will shorten your decision time when you are already in the music store. Most people prefer to learn and buy an acoustic guitar simply because it is suited to a variety of music styles. Electrical guitar is best for beginners. It looks more complicated than the acoustic one. However, it is more recommended for first time guitar players as it will be easier to play. The strings of an electric guitar are closer and it doesn't require much pressure to reach the different strings especially when your fingers are not yet familiar with transferring and moving on the fret board.

2. Test the sound. It is very important to test the quality of guitar by checking its sounds. Do this by plucking the strings. A good quality guitar has a clear and crisp sound otherwise you are holding the wrong one.

3. Have the strings changed. If the guitar you have chosen has already strings on it, do not forget to ask the seller to change it. This way, you are sure that the strings are new and that you can use them for a long time.

You may also choose to buy a beginner's guitar. This type of guitar is cheaper than the others however you will need to buy a new one as you progress in your learning. Remember the basic, the guitar you should buy must look good and sound good. You might encounter good salesman that would make you fall for his tactics. Do not give in. Be smart as the guitar that you will be buying shall be with you for as long as you want it to.

A Simple Beginners Guide To Buying A Guitar

By Elijah Fynn

Playing guitar has gained popularity over the past few years with more and more musicians willing to learn how to play guitar everyday. Before learning guitar you obviously need to buy a guitar. When buying a guitar you need to consider a few things that will become the basis of your learning process.

The type of guitar matters a lot. There are three types of guitar available: classical, electric and acoustic. Although acoustic is considered to be the most versatile, it might not be the right choice if you are a beginner. You can master the basics at playing guitar if you learn properly and with complete dedication.

The acoustic guitar normally has steel strings with a hollow body. The body is made of wood. You do not need an amp to play this instrument, although you could if you really wanted too. Some acoustic guitars even involve the use of a pickup.

These acoustic guitars that come with pickups are called acoustic-electric guitars. If your guitar does not have pre-installed pickups you can buy a sound hole pickup at an approximate price of $60. You can also opt for other accessories as well that can help you in learning and producing different sounds.

Classical guitars will normally have nylon strings instead of their steel counterparts that you see in acoustic guitars. The classical guitar is also used primarily for classical music. This isn't set in stone though, as you can use it for both finger picking and Spanish music as well.

If you want a guitar that everyone is familiar with, you will go with an electric guitar. These come with steel strings and a plastic body which isn't hollow. They also require an amplifier to play properly, for there is little to no sound without an amp. You may even want to add accessories such as an effects pedal to produce unique sounds.

When choosing a guitar you should also keep in mind the quality, material, length and size, frets, neck and many more things. A good quality guitar will not only produce good quality sounds but also helps in learning easily and quickly.

Make sure that any custom parts you buy for your instrument are actually compatible. Some users buy capos that do not fit, or the wrong type of pick. It is important to research this before you waste your money.

After you successfully buy a guitar you should focus on learning to play it. You can learn guitar using a number of ways i.e. online lessons, lessons from a nearby music school or even DVD's. Learning to play a guitar can be easy and simple job if you are willing to learn it with all your heart and let it become your favorite time pass during leisure time.

Inward Beauty

By Healthy Wealthy nWise

Akiane Kramarik's paintings have sold for up to $1 million. She has been a guest of the Oprah Winfrey Show, CNN, and Good Morning America. Her two bestselling books are "Akiane: Her Life, Her Art, Her Poetry" and "My Dream Is Bigger Than I - Memories of Tomorrow". Although she has quite an impressive resume under her belt, you might be surprised to learn she's still a child.

Akiane has been drawing since age four, painting since age six, and writing poetry since age seven. She has been featured in the United States, Canada, Singapore and England, and she is a member of both the Kids' Hall of Fame and the World Council for Gifted and Talented Children.

What makes Akiane different from other children? How did she get started? She says the difference is visions from God. She wasn't born into a religious family, but as a small child, these "visions from God" began appearing in her mind. At first, she told no one. Instead, she drew what she saw.

Some people claim to see visions, but Akiane takes it one step further. She believes she actually lives them as if she's able to be in two places at once. She is conscious in both places. Akiane told her mother this was why she decided to paint "Eternity". The feeling of being in two places is so realistic that she calls it "shared self".

Inspiration can be found anywhere. Akiane finds it in the most unlikely of places: the feel of an animal's fur, the scent of a flower, or the echoes of light dancing around objects during certain times of the day. Akiane paints what she sees and feels in such a way that the textures seem to pour from her paintbrush effortlessly.

Stop and smell the roses. It's a bit clich, but it's what Akiane does each and every day. She sees beauty all around her, so she uses her talents of art and poetry to show that beauty to others. She simply polishes what she sees, and she believes anyone can learn to do it whether it be art, writing, or even music.

Each of Akiane's paintings has unique meaning, and there was a reason she painted each one. "Hand of Destiny", for example, is the image of a left hand grasping destiny and a right hand moving helplessly. We need to choose our destiny. "The Quantum World" is just a microscopic piece of Akiane's world, but it shows the many dimensions of her world.

To Akiane, every color has meaning. White means truth, pink means trust, and black means suffering. Each stroke of each painting, and each word of each poem carries deep meaning beyond what many of us have ever thought. Akiane encourages the world around her to see beyond the obvious and find the hidden beauty within.

Symbolic Expression of Emotion in Text

By Heather Simpson

Smileys and emoticons are used in written forms of communication to describe a particular emotion or mood that is within the message that is sent. They consist of eyes formed by colons (or semicolons to show winking) and mouths formed by various letters or symbols ranging from a D to symbolize a large smile or a left hand parentheses to express sadness. Here are several example: : ( ; ) : D.

The difference between emoticons and smileys is that emoticons are not made of text symbols but are instead little pictures that express emotions. You can find them at smiley Central.

Thanks to the use of text messaging on cell phones, instant messaging (IM) and message boards the use of smileys and emoticons for informal written communications has soared.

Since the rise of the internet and wireless digital telecommunication these forms of communication have taken prominence and often youth were the first to integrate these forms of communication in their lives. It is rare to find youth today who are ignorant of the usage and meaning of smileys.

The expressions have evolved quiet a bit since the early development of these symbols. At first they only expressed happiness or sadness, but now they can express nuanced emotions like disbelief, anger, playfulness and surprise.

Emoticons are used more by females than males which may be attributed to females being more adept at using them and possibly to females being more in tune with the nuances of expressing emotions in text.

Those who criticize the use of emoticons as being detrimental to the depth of human communication do not address the benefits of using them for quicker messages with more intimate text messages.

Smileys have all been figured out and do not have the range of emotions that emoticons can express. The future of these symbols seem to have hit a plateau and the future or more nuanced symbols would require a wider range of symbols for longer text messages.

The Story of Country Sensation Dixie Chicks

By E Walker

There's old country. There's new country. Then there are the Dixie Chicks.

Natalie Maines, Martie Seidel and Emily Robison have taken the Texas-bred sound of a fiddle, banjo, dobro and crystal-clear vocal harmonies into whole new territory. They are the rare act that comes along a few times in a generation that is destined to shake things up, rewrite the rules and become the new musical trendsetters.

The public has certainly noticed. The Dixie Chicks' first Monument album Wide Open Spaces has become the biggest selling album ever by a country duo or group - racking up some 6 million sales by the time their second album, Fly, was completed. The tremendous sales only demonstrates that while the Dixie Chicks have established themselves as a true country music act, they have also won over audiences outside the country genre. In a music field routinely known for selling to the conservative 30 and over crowd, more than 60% of the Dixie Chicks sales have been to consumers under the age of 25. Their concert audience is as likely to be comprised of entire rows of young women in their early teens and twenties as it is to include middle age couples and entire families complete with pre-teen girls dressed like their musical idols and singing every Dixie Chicks' song word for word.

The press has certainly noticed. Publications from Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly and People to Harper's Bazaar, In Style, Seventeen and TV Guide have documented how the Dixie Chicks are bending the music world to their will and making country music more 'hip' than ever. With the wrap-up of 1998, numerous national publications named them the "Breakout Act of the Year" and recognized Wide Open Spaces as one of the "Best Of" albums of the year. USA Today credited the Chicks with single-handedly returning the banjo to country radio and Rolling Stone summed it up when they called them "the badass queenpins of country." At a time when much of the press on country music has lamented the 'sameness' of the sound and the artists, no less than the Los Angeles Times conceded that "the Dixie Chicks are the perfect antidote."

The music industry has certainly noticed. The Dixie Chicks' fellow musicians and industry peers, in particular, have overwhelmingly acknowledged their contribution. In a year's time, they have been honored with two Grammy Awards (Best Country Album and Best Country Vocal Performance Duo/Group), two Country Music Association Awards (Group of the Year and the Horizon Award), plus three Academy of Country Music Awards (including Album of the Year), one American Music Award and two TNN Music Awards. On Nashville's Music Row, where the unspoken business strategy often seems to be "if we can make it work once, we can beat it to death," the music industry has obviously been taking notes. It's likely not a coincidence that almost every record label in Nashville has signed a female trio since the Dixie Chicks exploded on to the scene. But clearly what makes this act work is not just that they are a female trio. The difference is this: There simply is no other act in any musical format that sounds like the Dixie Chicks

5 Fantastic Methods for Guitar Solos - Blues Guitarists

By Zack R

Serious blues guitar players aren't really content playing the guitar with the chords given to them. More than ever, they are definitely looking forward to the day that they will be able to have the spotlight to them-or to their music-by going solo. However, what does this mean to you? It means that you can already improvise with the music that you have.

Here are the things that you need to remember once you decide to go for a guitar solo:

1. Don't attempt to create random notes. Why is Santana one of the best blues guitar players of all time? He has countless guitar solos, and yet he never misses to sound so great. The technique doesn't really lie on the random notes. As a matter of fact, this is a completely wrong strategy. What you're definitely after is to create your own template, where you can make your improvisation.

2. Get yourself a blues scale. This doesn't really refer to the blues music. There's no clear explanation why it's called as such, though you can assume that it could be because of the certain random feeling of the music that the blues music has. Nevertheless, the blues scale is the widely used template when you're starting to train yourself for a guitar solo.

3. Practice alternate picking. The way you pick your guitar will matter when it comes to the kind of music that you want to produce. Since you're going to do improvisation, you need to try out the different ways on how to pick your guitar. This way, you can determine if the sound produced is good or not. The bottom line is you should avoid surprising yourself once you get on the stage.

4. Make sure that the notes are clear and even. Again, there should be no random notes in your blues guitar solos. You can accomplish this if you learn how to play the scale in different motions, such as forward and backward. Each note, moreover, should also be played twice before you proceed to the next note.

5. List the notes. Unless you have memorized the different kinds of scales used in guitar playing, or if you are already too experienced in guitar solos, you need to list the improvised notes, so you can bring with you when you're performing, especially when it's going to be your first time to do the improvised chords.

My Pet Calls Me By My Name - Does Yours?

By Carla Hinsey

Do you know what an African Grey Parrot is? African Grey Parrots are becoming one of the all time favorites of bird lovers. These strikingly beautiful birds, that can out talk any four year old child, have charmed their way into many a household across the globe.

The African Grey is truly one of Gods' special creatures. The Grey's have the ability to express themselves in human language and emotion. Whatever language you speak, they can learn and communicate with you.

Skeptics argue that parrots can only mimic back what they have heard believing that even the most highly trained parrot doesn't really understand what it is doing or saying. It's possible that may be true for some species of parrots, but if you live with an African Grey you know deep in your heart that this argument is not a true at all. The African Grey, being a highly intelligent, deeply emotional, and hysterically witty bird would challenge even the hard-line skeptic.

Living with an African Grey takes a great commitment. They have a life span much like a human. If you are going to adopt a Grey into your life, you have to commit to it. As with any intelligent and emotional life form, you have to be prepared to except the ups and the downs that go along with it. We have both a male and a female living in our home.

There are times when it is a huge challenge. They can be demanding and insistent. If they don't get what they want, they can be total brats. Their ear-piercing screams and demanding behavior will surly test even the most patient of persons. This is the most negative of their traits. Their positive traits far out weight their negative ones. On their positive side, I can't say enough about them. The Grey knows when you are sad or upset. They will do everything in their power to make you laugh or change your mood. From their class clown antics to all their hugs and kisses, they will completely wash away a bad day.

The African Grey is best known for their talking and reasoning ability. Some are better talkers than others. Some can imitate sounds so real you can't tell the difference between the actual sound and the bird.

My female is the sound maker. She can talk, but not as well as the male. She is a sweet and loving bird. Her sounds are amazing. I can't tell you how many times I have answered a phone that never rang or opened a door when a doorbell never chimed. I have heard my dog bark when she was soundly asleep in her bed. I've heard doors squeak open that were shut, a microwave oven peep that was never turned on, a police siren and a trash truck backup peeper that was never there. These are only a few examples from a long list.

My male is the talker. So far his vocabulary is around one hundred words. He makes up his own sentences from the words he knows. Studies have shown, that Greys can develop a fifteen hundred to three thousand word vocabulary. When the male can't see me but can hear me, he calls out my name and asks, "Carla, You alright?" I answer, "I'm alright," he says, "Ok." Sometimes, when he starts screaming his head off and the female screams back, he tells her, "That's too loud, stop being a brat." He tells me, "Gonna go night night," when he wants to take a nap. He tells me, "I'm hungry," when he wants something to eat, then tells me what he wants to eat. He makes up things I can't understand and laughs hysterically.

My birds have not been officially trained. Everything they do and say is a direct result of living in the same household with my family. They are members of our family, and as with any other family member they need love and understanding. They need quality time inside the family circle, but also some quiet time to themselves. Do not stick them in a room away from the family hub. It will make them feel isolated and lonely. You will be setting the stage for an unhappy bird. Greys are very sensitive and you can easily upset their emotional well being. This can result in behavioral problems in the future.

Greys are full of life and love to play. If you have to be away from home during the day, make sure you supply them with plenty of toys. In the wild they forage for food about eighty percent of their time. Greys get bored easily, so try to keep a verity of toys around so that they can occupy their time alone. Interchange their toys regularly.

In closing, I highly recommend African Grey Parrots as pets. The only thing I would ask of you before going out and bringing one home, is to do some research on their needs. Make sure you have a full understanding of their housing and diet needs. You also need to make sure your house is bird safe. With all of this in mind, if you can provide for their most basic needs, the African Grey Parrot will reward you with a life time of devotion, affection, and love.

Beauty and the Beast, the Peak of the Disney Renaissance

By Steve Collins

Beauty and the Beast is the 30th animated movie made by Walt Disney Studio. Based on the time-honored French fairytale made popular by Madame Beaumont's story published in 1756, the film premiered at Disney's El Capitan Theater in Los Angeles in 1991. Beauty and the Beast is still one of the best known and beloved films in the Disney canon.

It is the first, and to this date only, full-length animated movie to be nominated by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences for Best Picture. Considered the epitome of the "Disney Renaissance" (1998-1994) Beauty and the Beast would come to influence all following films in terms of blending traditional and computer-generated animation. The launching of this renaissance was the release of The Little Mermaid and ended, by and large, with The Lion King.

The American Film Institute ranked Beauty and the Beast as the 22nd best musical of all time and the 34th best romantic movie of all time. Additionally, the United States national Film Registry deemed the film "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." With regards to the greatest songs in movies, the AFI ranked the theme song from the film at number 62.

In various interviews, Disney executives responsible for the production of Beauty and the Beast felt the climate of the culture in 1990 and 1991 was top-heavy with shallow depictions of women as objects. Moreover, they were enthused to produce a feature that fought the culturally tendency for young men to be pressured into marrying or dating the "prettier girl." They maintained the moral of the film, that looks aren't everything, spoke to the majority of viewers, accounting for its phenomenal box-office success. Indeed, Beauty and the Beast grossed $171 million domestically and over $403 million worldwide. It was the third-most successful movie of 1991, overshadowed only by Terminator 2 and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. It was the first animated movie in history to exceed the $100 million mark.

Critical response was generally positive, indeed Beauty and the Beast was one of the best reviewed animated movies ever made. It was lauded as a return to the classic filmmaking Disney had become synonymous with. Roger Ebert praised the film, "Beauty and the Beast reaches back to an older and healthier Hollywood tradition in which the best writers, musicians and filmmakers are gathered for a project on the assumption that a family audience deserves great entertainment, too."

Bono of U2 Helped Me Launch My Eco-Friendly Business

By Rick London

Bono (of the band U2) and his wife Ali put me in business, and did not even know it. I could have never done it without them. My new cartoon t-shirt business is eco-friendly, thanks to them. The great irony is, they probably will never read this, and will never know what they did for me. But what they are doing for the planet, with Edun Organics is not only a business they launched, of organic cotton textiles to make eco-friendly clothing, but (at the risk of sounding overly-dramatic) a gift to humanity.

After working for twenty years in the corporate world, by the late '90's I faced unemployment due to health issues which would eventually disable me. I could no longer do the work I had been trained to do. I was now officially disabled.

As time went by, I became a cartoonist and freelance writer. I put up a cartoon site and it became more or less a hobby, with eventual small sales to publications. By 2005, I had been doing this from my home like a robot, I never really looked up to see the achievement. But I was now getting requests from major charities to send them autographed cartoons for their celebrity auctions. I was getting requests to buy cartoons from magazine, website, and Ezine publishers. Manufacturers wanted to license my images. I was surprised to see I had over 8000 original cartoons on my site now, over 3 million annual visitors, and highly rated on Google and Alexa among other analytical sites. Now I had thirteen stores yet something was missing. I had always been aware of the environment and how fragile our planet is. Even though my products were selling wonderfully on such items as tees, mouse pads, coffee mugs, hoodies, and the like, something was bothering me.

Now, our population was going green and I felt I was being left behind, even though I had always tried to live my life that way. So I started my search for organic cotton manufacturers and though I found a number of them, the minimum order was just too much. Then I came across a POD (Print On Demand) established firm called Zazzle and noticed they handled men's and women's organic cotton tees that uses a totally nontoxic dye process. Not only that, but all I had to have was the graphic, and place it on the product digitally, and they did the rest, from producing the product to shipping it. No minimum. I could sell them wholesale or by the piecemeal. Win-win for Zazzle, Edun, Rick London Organics, and our customers.

Bono and Ali's company is known as Edun Oganics. Edun is "Nude" backwards. I launched my organic cotton tee store last month and discovered I was the first cartoonist, I'm told, to "go green". Recently, I read that Edun was launched and is owned by Bono (of the band U2) and his wife Ali. Chances are they will never see this article, and that is alright. I will write them a thank you note. They leveled the playing field for me. I finally was able to align my actions with what was/is in my heart, thanks to someone who had already brought me much joy with his music, and his wife, Ali. Thank you Bono and Ali, in case you ever see this. They gave a second chance to a cartoonist/Internet entrepreneur to do what was really in his heart, after all.

The Proper Way To Tune Your Guitar

By Eugene W

Whether you're learning to play the guitar on your own or with a professional, you will surely hear this suggestion: you need to tune your guitar. If you don't, then the sound that you're going to produce will be a total mess. You can't get any sound right, and everything will just remind you of the scratching sound of the chalk on the blackboard.

1. Better listen to the sound real carefully. Tuning is all about making sure that your guitar is on the right pitch. You will never be able to do it properly if you don't try to listen to the sound every time you tune down or up your guitar. It's very important that you can learn to practice how to listen music through your ears.

2. Obtain a reference pitch when you are tuning. A reference pitch can come from another musical instrument. You can also make use of an electronic tuner. However, it would be best that when you're tuning up or down your guitar, the musical instrument where the reference pitch will be coming from should also be the one that you're going to utilize together with your guitar.

3. Tune up, not tune down, your guitar. If you're going to make a choice between tuning up or tuning down your guitar, the best preference will always be to tune up. This means that you have to increase the string's tension. You should do so until the desired tone is achieved. However, if it becomes too tight, you may loosen it and just retune it. Tuning down usually causes wrong pitches for your guitar, and it could be a little more difficult for you to achieve the right tone.

4. Go for standard tuning. The very first thing that you need to accomplish is standard tuning. It means that the notes should be adjusted from low to high. These include, A, B, D, E, and G. You can make use of other tuning strategies, especially when it comes to notes. Nevertheless, if you're still practically new with tuning, it's always best to stick with standard tuning first.

5. Don't try to make any improvisations if you haven't mastered proper tuning. It's normal for guitarists to wish that they can actually go solo with their guitar playing. However, you shouldn't tread in this more difficult aspect unless you really know how to tune your guitar. This is because improvisations usually involve changing notes as well as pitches.

A Short History Of Country Group Dixie Chicks

By E Walker

The Dixie Chicks are a country/rock music trio from the United States comprising Emily Robison, Martie Maguire and Natalie Maines. They are the highest-selling female band in any musical genre, having sold 36 million albums as of June 2006.

The Dixie Chicks was founded by the sisters Martie and Emily Erwin along with Laura Lynch and Robin Lynn Macy. The Erwin sisters have since married and changed their names to Martie Maguire and Emily Robison, respectively. The Erwin sisters provided the instrumental firepower for the band while Lynch and Macy were the lead singers. All four original members of the Dixie Chicks graduated from Greenhill School in Addison, Texas, a suburb of Dallas.

Robin Lynn Macy left in late 1992, for a "purer" bluegrass approach, and remained active in the Dallas music scene.

Laura Lynch was replaced in late 1995 by Natalie Maines, the daughter of producer, steel guitar player, and former Chicks' session player Lloyd Maines. Around the same time, Sony scouted the Chicks and signed them to the newly revived Monument Records label."Wide Open Spaces" (1998), is the first album released after the original lead vocalist Laura Lynch was replaced by Natalie Maines, the album was the biggest commercial success and sold 12 million copies in U.S.

The Chicks also delivered gleeful revenge epics such as "Goodbye Earl," the tale of a woman who murders her abusive husband and gets away with it, or raucous, ribald numbers such as "Sin Wagon," a concert staple rave-up. Both of these tracks contained thematic elements that led to some radio stations removing the Chicks from their playlists, but the group was consistently unapologetic.

The Dixie Chicks became involved in a dispute with their record label regarding royalties and accounting procedures. After the trio quit in disgust, Sony sued the group for failure to complete their contract. The group countersued.

After the two parties reconciled their differences, Home, independently produced by Lloyd Maines, was released in 2002. For tracks not written by the group, outside songwriters were solicited for personal songs that were considered "uncommercial". Unlike the Chicks' two previous records, Home was recorded without drums and is dominated by very up-tempo bluegrass and pensive ballads. In addition, the lyrics of the opening track and first single, "Long Time Gone," explicitly attacked contemporary country music radio, accusing it of ignoring the soul of the genre as exemplified by Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, and Hank Williams.

Maines' remark sparked intense criticism; many Americans believed that she should not criticize George Bush. Maines insists, however, "I said it there 'cause that's where I was."

By the time of the Dixie Chicks' August 3 Atlanta show, Maines remarked that they had not heard any boos for a couple of shows; some were heard that night, but the Chicks felt that it was okay, as they supported freedom of speech.

In a September 2003 interview, Maguire told the German magazine Der Spiegel: "We don't feel a part of the country scene any longer, it can't be our home anymore." She noted a lack of support from country stars, and being shunned at the 2003 ACM awards. "Instead, we won three Grammys against much stronger competition. So we now consider ourselves part of the big rock 'n' roll family." However, in an open letter to fans on the Chicks' website, Maines said Maguire had been misquoted.

In June 2006 an article in the Telegraph quoted Emily Robison on the lack of support from other country music performers, "A lot of artists cashed in on being against what we said or what we stood for because that was promoting their career, which was a horrible thing to do." Robison continued, "A lot of pandering started going on, and you'd see soldiers and the American flag in every video. It became a sickening display of ultra-patriotism." Maines commented, "The entire country may disagree with me, but I don't understand the necessity for patriotism. Why do you have to be a patriot? About what? This land is our land? Why? You can like where you live and like your life, but as for loving the whole country ... I don't see why people care about patriotism."Wikinews has related news:Dixie Chicks show documentary at TIFF

The group's Accidents & Accusations Tour began in July 2006. Ticket sales were strong in Canada and in some Northeastern markets, but notably weak in other areas. A number of shows were cancelled or relocated to smaller venues due to poor sales, and in Houston, Texas, tickets never even went on sale when local radio stations refused to accept advertising for the event. In August, a re-routed tour schedule was announced with a greater emphasis on Canadian dates, where Taking the Long Way had gone five-times-platinum. The tour's shows themselves generally refrained from any explicit verbal political comments, letting the music, especially the central performance of Not Ready to Make Nice, speak for itself. At a Nov. 5, 2006 concert in Calgary, Alberta the Chicks received a thunderous ovation when the song was over, and the band held up a handwritten sign from a fan that read "Nobody likes a nasty Bush."

The music video for "Not Ready to Make Nice" was nominated for the 2007 CMT Music Video Awards in the categories of "Video of the Year" and "Group Video of the Year," however, the video did not win in its nominated categories.

Electrifying Performance with Your Blues Guitar

By Zack R

Electric guitars are what they are-simply electrifying. They can cause your adrenaline to rush and your head to bang. They get everyone jumping and excited to hear the music. Simply put, playing the electric guitar is truly fun.

Here are the basic ways on how to add more zest to your performance with your favorite electric guitar.

1. Teach yourself the theories. Everything should start from here. Oftentimes, wannabe blues guitar players believe that as long as they can play eardrum-shattering music with their amplified guitars, they are already good to go. They are completely wrong. You got to teach yourself the different theories governing music and guitar playing.

There are many benefits you can derive from it. First of all, you should remember that principles remain the same, but strategies may change. This only means that if you know the reason why notes sound like this, or why scales have to be like that, it will be very convenient for you to improvise. The most important thing is you can fulfill the principles of guitar playing. Second, you can learn to appreciate your music more. It will help you add passion to what you're currently doing.

You really don't need to learn everything right away, though. If you're new, then you need to start with the basics. This may include learning the notes, scales, and basic electric blues guitar techniques.

2. Listen to different kinds of music. Don't feel bad if you practically have to start like a copycat when you're still learning how to play. After all, this is one of the most basic steps. You may have to listen to as many songs with electric guitars as their main accompaniment. Your goal is to be able to produce the same sound from your own electric guitar. You can download these songs from the Internet, or you can purchase a CD compilation of greatest singers and bands, such as Jimi Hendrix, Steve Morse, and Mattias IA Eklundh.

3. Learn how to do the blues licks. This is actually an unraveled mystery. One of the greatest techniques in playing the electric guitar is to learn how to do some licking or ad libs. This means blues guitar improvisation. When you know how to do this, you can add more soul, meaning, or depth to any kind of song that you're going to play. Most of all, you can spice your music with a little bit about yourself.

Tattoo Advice and Aftercare

By Mike Wamoult

Getting a tattoo is a very serious choice so if you have any doubts whatsoever it is a great idea to get a bit of tattoo advice before you proceed. Remember that there is going to be aftercare involved and more importantly your tattoo is there for life. Usually whichever tattoo shop that you have decided to have your tattoo done at, they will be glad to answer any questions that you might have.

You can also ask around and check what other people have in terms of tattoo advice. It is quite common to hear someone state that they wished they had gotten a tattoo in a different area of their body or that they had changed something about their tattoos. You should ask them about aftercare when you are at it. They might offer you a couple of great tips before you get a tattoo.

While still on the subject of tattoo advice, one bit of tattoo advice which you have to note is that you should try to avoid rebellion tattoos. Rebellion tattoos are basically tattoos which have been gotten out of anger or some other hasty and unplanned thought and it is quite common to regret such tattoos later.

Included in your tattoo advice should be making sure that you find a talented tattoo artist and go to a reputable tattoo shop. Ask around and find out what other people have to say and who they recommend. Find out in addition if the artists were friendly, informative, and did they allow you to fully understand the aftercare process.

You should think of factors such as how your tattoo is going to look when you grow older and your skin is no longer as elastic as it is now. Are you using a tattoo meant for larger areas of your body and trying to squeeze it into a smaller area that will do it no good at all? Will your tattoo be an employment problem for you?

The best approach to getting a tattoo means thinking logically and in an educated manner. You should also remember that tattoos aren't garage sales where you seek to save money, a good tattoo artist will charge the premium and if you look for a tattoo artist that offers shortcuts, you might wind up with something less than desired for the rest of your life.

During the tattooing process, you might feel a bit hurt but tattoo artists will usually give you advice on how to lessen the effects and pain experienced with the procedure.

This should cover the various areas of getting a tattoo that should be of assistance to you but also remember that if you have friends who have had some experience with tattoos; it would also pay to listen to what they have to say about tattoos and their proper aftercare.

Aboriginal Art in Bali

By Barry Numnagerie

My wife just got back from Bali on Friday morning and the first thing that she had to say was that she was amazed to see some aboriginal art in a store there. She went there to source some huts for the Tourist Park that we are developing. She ended up buying furniture, planter pots, statues, bed spreads, sheets, doonas, tiles, pavers and some huge doors like the ones that you see in mansions.

I was expecting to fill 2 x 40' containers with the Huts, now I fear that we are going to need 6 x 40' containers to fit everything in. I have heard of women who are habitual sale attendees, and get home and tell their husbands how much they have saved by buying this dress or these shoes etc., as a male my answer would be you haven't saved money you have spent it. My wife has never been one of that type, but i fear that now she is.

We are going to have to go into the retail furniture business, because if we don't sell something we aren't going to be able to move in our home. Don't get me wrong some of the stuff is absolutely beautiful but where are we going to put it all.

It is like going back to biblical times when Noah built his boat. She bought 2 of everything, except for hand basins, 12 of them, and 5 Beds, 3 sets of 6 dining room chairs, enough tiles and pavers to do 10 houses, lions of varying sizes, elephants, cats, owls, you name the animal she has probably bought a statue of it.

But back to the fact that you can find Aboriginal Art for sale in Bali, is the demand so high for Aboriginal Art that we in Australia can't keep up with it, so our neighbours have generously assisted us to satisfy this demand. Tourists come to Australia to buy Aboriginal Art, but if you can buy it in Asia, or Europe or the USA, why come to Australia. I'll tell you why.

If you are buying on the Internet there is only one website where you can buy the art of young relatively unknown Aboriginal Artists. If you don't buy from the Aboriginal Art Sale website then the only other way that you can start investing in young Aboriginal Artists, and therefore potentially have a much greater return on your investment, is to come to Australia.

You can spend months travelling around Australia buying up big, and you should, because it will be a long time before you come back. I say spend a few months because there are people who spend all year long travelling around Australia and they still haven't seen it all, it is a big country.

If you are buying Aboriginal Art purely because it is pleasant to look at then why pay a small fortune for a famous artist when you can support a young up and coming Aboriginal Artist who can produce a similar product. Do your sums, spend thousands of dollars buying the paintings of well-known artists and sit on them and wait for years for them to increase in value or invest in young emerging artists and get a more rapid capital growth.

A Short History Of Country Legend Van Morrison

By E Walker

George Ivan "Van" Morrison (born August 31, 1945) is a singer and songwriter from Belfast, Northern Ireland. He plays a variety of instruments, including the guitar, harmonica, keyboards, and saxophone. Featuring his characteristic growl--a unique mix of throaty folk, blues, Irish, skat, and celtic influences.

Morrison is widely considered one of the most unusual and influential vocalists in the history of rock and roll. Famed critic Greil Marcus has gone so far as to note that "No white man sings like Van Morrison."

Sometimes dubbed "Van the Man", Morrison first rose to prominence as the lead singer of the British band Them, penning their seminal 1965 hit "Gloria". A few years later, Morrison left the band for a successful solo career.

Morrison has pursued an idiosyncratic musical path. Much of his music is tightly structured around the conventions of American soul and R&B, such as the popular singles "Brown Eyed Girl", "Moondance", and "Domino".

An equal part of his catalogue consists of lengthy, loosely connected, spiritually inspired musical journeys that show the influence of Celtic tradition, jazz, and stream-of-consciousness narrative, such as his classic album Astral Weeks and lesser known works such as Veedon Fleece. The two strains together are sometimes referred to as "Celtic Soul".

Morrison's career, spanning some four decades, has influenced many popular musical artists. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. In 2000, Morrison ranked number 25 on American cable music channel VH1's list of its 100 greatest artists of rock and roll.

3 Ways To Master The Blues Guitar Like Buddy Guy

By Zack Roberts

Most blues guitarists start out as rock or country guitarists, only developing their interests in blues at a later date. Thus, there are many blues guitarists who don't have all of the necessary education and background necessary to play traditional blues who rely on modified rock licks and scales to sort of "fake" a blues sound.

For the guitarist who's serious about developing his or her skill as a blues musician, there are several things that can be done to enhance and speed this process.

Learn some techniques and methods of playing that are specific to blues music. This can mean learning specifically blues-oriented scales, and licks. Especially valuable techniques that are a bit harder to master, but well worth it are playing with a slide and playing in altered tunings. Many fantastic blues soloists will play in an open chord tuning to facilitate slide playing.

Don't think of just major chords either, minor chord tunings are extremely versatile when it comes to blues.

Learn from the masters. If you're more into modern blues, than start your quest with Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Keb' Mo' and Buddy Guy. Once you've absorbed these giants, than start working your way backward with such artists like Robert Johnson and Howlin' Wolf.

3. Develop your skill with the acoustic guitar. Remember, blues started as an acoustic art form, so to discover pure blues, pick up an acoustic guitar, a glass slide, put on some recordings of the old masters, and take yourself back to the Delta!

Why Cross Tattoos Are So Popular

By Simon Morris

Although tattoos are still considered by some to be against better moral judgment, they have become a part of our everyday lives. Displaying a tattoo on a person's skin has become an art and people will pay a small fortune for the 'perfect' tattoo.

For the longest time now cross tattoos have been the choice for the vast majority of people but very few of these cross tattoos are just two black lines on a shoulder or hip somewhere. Most are elaborate color spectacles and incorporate many other designs with the person's entire back as the canvas.

People who have decided to create works of art with their tattoos very often have some idea of what the entire design will look like before they get started. They will then take their time in having it completed usually based on either what their body can tolerate or on a money factor as some designs can be really expensive.

'Getting inked' is a term used in the tattoo circles to describe the act of having a tattoo etched into the skin. A tattoo can mean so much to the person getting it that it changes their life in some way or another. A tattoo has been known to give a person a sense of belonging.

There are those who would go as far as to confess they have a secret obsession with how getting a tattoo makes them feel. And it's not necessarily got anything to do with enjoying pain.

There are many who make their cross tattoo choice based solely on their religious beliefs. Deciding on a tattoo is a very personal choice. It doesn't take a stretch of the imagination to understand that someone would ink a permanent reflection of their belief, into their skin, for the world to see.

Then there are those tattoos that belong to certain tribes or religious organizations. Some cross tattoos are actually not what they appear and if you look close enough, the crossed lines are actually crossed swords depicting something maybe a little darker. There are also those who may or may not have any religious beliefs but who will have the cross tattoo placed upside down on their skin.

Celtic cross tattoos are a very popular choice and have been for many years. The combination of its mysterious history and the elaborate designs one can choose from make it a preference for unique body art.

It is of not much consequence as to what you take because almost any kind of photo can be sold. The time to find a buyer and the remuneration might be different.

The photo industry does not differentiate your photos based on age or sex. And the photo industry is particularly large composed of magazine editors, travel agents, banks, web designers, students and even chefs. Each one of these people require a particular style or content of pictures and by trial and error and experience you can find out where your line of action falls and specialize accordingly.

Another method would be to build and maintain your own site. This can be done in either of two ways. One, start from scratch and build your own site by yourself. This requires some in-depth knowledge of coding and SEO techniques. The decision on the layout and look of the web site, what photos should be displayed, how long they are to be exhibited are all yours. It is yours to do what you want.

If programming is not your forte, doesn't matter, entrust the job to a professional Web designer. Make it explicitly clear what you expect on the web site and its purpose. Have a few more confabulations, relax and there you have it. Maybe a week or two depending on whether you intend to maintain it for your personal use or whether you intend to let others also use it like a Photo Stock Site.

It is better to start with the stock photo option initially and buyers start trickling in, it is time a web site of your own becomes a reality. A simple variation is to ride piggy-bank on some established web site that caters to just such business. Of course you will have to pay a fee for the use of their services. So, if you have a lot of photos and want to sell them, try the methods outlined above and see what you get. If you do not have photos, go out and get them or get some from your friends or relatives and get started. And Good Luck to you!

A Biography of Country Star Taylor Swift

By E Walker

Seventeen year-old Taylor Swift is the only female artist in Country music history to write or co-write every song on a Platinum selling debut.

Taylor has enjoyed a near meteoric rise to stardom in recent months. One year ago, she was riding around in a rental car visiting radio stations, promoting her first single, "Tim McGraw." By May of this year, she had just been awarded the fan-voted CMT Music Award for Breakthrough Video, and provided one of those "awww" moments during the ACM Awards show, when she serenaded Tim McGraw with his namesake song, then introduced herself to him, "Hi, I'm Taylor."

Other highlights of Taylor's debut year have included:

Tours with Rascal Flatts, George Strait and Kenny Chesney. She is currently on tour with Brad Paisley and will join Tim McGraw and Faith Hill's Soul2Soul 2007 tour for several dates next month.

Taylor continues to sell in excess of 30,000 albums a week--every week, outselling many of the genre's superstars. Taylor Swift debuted on the Billboard sales chart at #3 in October of last year, and has been one of Country's Top 10 sellers for 26 weeks. The CD was RIAA certified Gold in just 13 weeks, and is now Platinum (sales of over 1,000,000 units).

Taylor was named one of AOL's Best New Artists of the Year, was chosen by the Los Angeles Times as "One to Watch in 2007," was nominated by the Academy of Country Music for Best New Female Vocalist, and was honored as a breakthrough artist by Music Row magazine with their prestigious Critic's Pick award.

Taylor's debut single "Tim McGraw" hit the Top 5 of the country radio charts, reaching over 30 million listeners a week. The song has sold more than 500,000 digital downloads and has been certified Digital Gold, one of only eleven country singles to ever reach this milestone. Her current single, "Teardrops on My Guitar," is rapidly approaching country's Top 10, this week reaching #12 with a bullet.

The videos for both of Taylor's singles have received massive airplay on both CMT and GAC, and both clips have topped the country video charts. She is currently the only country artist with a video in the Top 25 on the Yahoo music chart.

Key Features To Look Out For When Buying A Digital Camera

By Ray Lam

Digital cameras have advanced enormously in the last few years with many clever features incorporated into them; the number of functions they now have sometimes confuses potential buyers. When you are ready to buy a digital camera, consider what it is you want it to do. To help you make this decision some hints and tips are discussed below. Probably the most important thing you need to determine what functions are important in the camera you choose.

Do you know what type of photos you intend to take? Even with the overall reduction in cost and improvement in abilities and design during recent years, the cost is still something to factor in. If you are using you home pc to carry out photo editing you will need to think about whether you pc is up to the task. You may want to consider buying your camera as part of a new computer system which would probably include all the software and a printer as well. Editing software is already included when you buy digital camera but other devices aren't.

Special photo printers that do not require a computer are now available and the price of these is dropping slowly. To get the best pictures it will be necessary to set the camera to the maximum number of pixels it can operate at. Although many digital cameras have an inbuilt memory, this is usually very small so an external memory card will be necessary. There are a number of different types of card with storage capacities up to 32 gigabytes (at the time of writing; hundreds, sometimes many thousands of images can be stored on these larger capacity storage cards.

The more 'user friendly' your model is, the more likely it is you will use it. Take note of how easy it is to operate because although functions are important, if it isn't easy to use, it won't be! Digital cameras use a great deal of power, especially the screen so even if they are not supplied, rechargeable batteries should be used; they may cost a little more initially but can be charged 1,000 times so are very cost effective. When buying your digital camera, look for a large LCD screen version which many newer cameras have as standard; some models have a swiveling action, which is great for viewing your pictures and taking those from awkward angles.

Often you will find that smaller compact types are only made without a viewfinder to reduce the size but include a large, by comparison, LCD screen. If you want yours to have a good zoom facility, you should opt for those with an optical zoom lens. If you are serious about buying a digital camera then you should try to avoid purchasing one with only a digital zoom. Remote controls and diopter adjustment are still quite rare but handy if you have them fitted although I would prefer to have a tripod socket if there were a choice. With a little luck this article has cleared up a number of points you may have been unclear on and should make buying a digital camera a little easier.

A Short Look At Funny Movies

By Joseph Pope

Comedy is a discretionary endeavor. The common pitfall of those who chase it is to either go too far or not go far enough. The compromise between these that will appeal to a wide audience is a goal not attained by many.

The history behind the genre known as comedic film is as diverse as the performers who have delighted us through the years. Film has now been around long enough to classify it as an old art form, not some young, silly upstart with no experience under its belt. And as a respectable institution, it's history can now be dissected and marveled at.

The general public first started to recognize films en masse in the early part of the twentieth century. Film makers quickly grasped the scope of what could be done with the medium, and veered away from producing only dramatic works. Realizing the appeal of laughter as a worthy form of entertainment, they gave birth to what we now know and love as the comedic film.

The preferences of movie buffs have always been somewhat of an unstable thing. All forms of entertainment have had to adapt to this through the years. The comedic film is no exception to this rule.

The boundaries imposed by the technology of any given age have also affected the style of movie to be released, and the style of acting therein. In the beginning, films had no sound. The thespians to gain notoriety in this era were forced to amuse audiences solely by means of physical comedy. The unique slapstick of Harold Lloyd comes to mind as example of this.

When it was possible to introduce sound into film, talented performers invented new ways to entertain. Who could forget popular acts such as Abbott and Costello or Laurel and Hardy, both troupes responsible for entertainment legacies. Just say the words, "Who's on first?" in any crowd, and you'll most likely get an immediate reaction.

The next technological innovation to come along and change the way things were done was the television. The 1950s saw many films being turned into episodes to accommodate a weekly television schedule. Who among us who grew up in that era doesn't fondly remember "The Honeymooners?"

The next notable change in the way things were done came about due to new talent, not new toys, when Woody Allen brought about an entire style all his own. Everyone has their own favorite picks out of the truly staggering amount of films this genius has produced throughout his career. His trademark was the use of unusually witty dialogue to exaggerate normal conversation.

As a result of the hard work and dedication of all these masters of the art, and the popularity that they achieved, the modern film connoisseur can track down all sorts of comedic films in their local video store. An endeavor I recommend for anyone, if not for the enjoyment of the film itself, then for a look into the times they were filmed in. There really is so much we can learn by watching films from different eras.

How to Choose the Right Guitar Lessons for You

By Eugene W

The guitar is one of the most flexible instruments in the world. You can play the blues, jazz, rock, and almost any other kind of music. It's no wonder therefore that almost all people want to learn how to strum the strings.

There are some who are truly gifted. After a while of self-studying, they can already play a variety of songs together with their guitar. Others, meanwhile, aren't as lucky. You can actually see them struggling for hours or even months. If you belong to the latter group, you have one more effective option: choose a guitar lesson.

Here are the different techniques in choosing the right guitar lesson for you:

1. Stick with the level you're in. If you haven't played guitar before, then you have to choose the beginner level. If you want to advance with your techniques, you also have to select the advanced level. Choosing one inappropriately will definitely spell disaster for you-unless you're a born guitar genius.

2. Choose self-taught audio and video guitar lessons. If you want to obtain greater flexibility of your time and in a shoe-string budget, then you can simply opt for guitar lessons in video and audio format. Keep in mind that this is not a formal training, which means you really don't have anybody telling you if you're doing things or not. You just have to depend on your gut feel and perhaps the reaction of your audience once you start playing the guitar. The good thing about this is you can bring your lessons everywhere you go, and they are absolutely free.

3. Look for an online guitar lesson program. There are already numerous websites that are offering guitar playing modules to their students. They also have experts with them, who can guide you during difficult periods in your lessons. They may cost few dollars, but if you're truly serious about learning, then you wouldn't definitely mind spending some of your money for it.

4. Download a software. Besides modules, you can also download a number of software that will help you how to play the guitar. They have both audio and video presentations, audio samples, and tabs that you can utilize while you're practicing playing. You can make use of this even when you don't have an Internet connection.

5. Attend a class. If you're still in school, you can ask around if there are special classes for guitar playing. It will save you time, money, and effort as you can participate every time your classes end. It's going to be fun too as you have several people who can offer their opinion about your guitar playing skills.

Why Digital Cameras Are The Future Of Photography

By Ray Lam

In just a short space of time digital cameras have taken over the photographic market place. Storing the information as digital-bytes is how this type of camera keeps the pictures you have taken, safe and ready to view, store or print! With the upsurge of home computers it means that almost anyone can store and then play with the images on their own pc. The term used for how these images are stored is called pixels; a series of dots using one's and zero's in the same way that a computer stores information.

These cameras still use lenses in much the same way that conventional cameras do. However, it is how the digital camera captures the light that makes all the difference because it achieves this by using a special sensor as opposed to film. A feature of the better quality versions is they have a sensor that converts light into electrical charges using a different system to their less expensive cousins. The less expensive capture system called CMOS is generally in lower end cameras and probably won't replace the more expensive CCD although it does an admirable job.

CCD's are much more costly to produce than the CMOS devices, but by using the latter it has brought the cost of many models down considerably. The CCD and CMOS devices used in digital cameras capture light like tiny solar collectors both achieving the same effect but just by differing methods. Shopping for one of these types of camera can be daunting but a few tips can make all the difference. Look for models with over 6 megapixels and you won't go far wrong as they will provide decent images; the higher the resolution of the camera the bigger the photos that can be printed.

By using the CMOS sensor, many models have become more affordable for those users that do not require such a high performance device. Whilst both the CMOS and CCD systems both capture an image using millions of solar cells to make up the whole picture, they perform this in slightly different ways Shopping for one of these types of camera can be daunting but a few tips can make all the difference. Image quality is important or it will be waste of time taking them so look for the highest megapixel model within your price range; the higher the resolution of the camera the bigger the photos that can be printed.

* Special night time shots * Web cam function * Negative image

High resolution cameras require more space to store images so you will probably need an additional storage card. Digital storage has come down in price so buying gigabyte card will no longer require a loan but you shouldn't think of having anything less than this.

For photographers who will keep the camera with them at all time you may want to consider one of the more compact types that can be carried in a shirt pocket. Professional photographers may need heavy, bulky equipment but there is no requirement for a keen amateur to do so! By using this information you shouldn't go to far wrong when you go to buy your camera. Digital cameras have very quickly become the way to take photos and have reinvented photography for those who had no real interest before there introduction.

3 Ways to Choose The Right Guitar for You

By E Walker

There are many kinds of guitars in the world, and finding the one that suits your personality and the kind of music you like to play can be daunting. Nevertheless, as long as you're armed with the right kinds of tips in choosing one, especially if it is your first guitar, you will never go wrong.

Here are 3 best techniques in choosing the most appropriate guitar for you:

1. Complement the size of your guitar to your height. This is very important as you need to be able to reach the notes on the fretboard and strum the right string, whether you are sitting or standing up. A guitar that is extremely large could prove to be quite hard to manage, no matter what hand you are going to use. If the strings appear too far, you have to actually extend your arms more, which, in turn, can hurt your shoulders. You may also feel the pain in your fingers.

If you are a girl, it would be great if you can pick women's guitars. There are plenty of them now, and they all appear chic and yet truly high performing. They are also much smaller in size compared to full-size guitars.

2. Check out the tuning gears of your guitar. When you are going to play, you have to actually make some adjustments on your guitar so you can produce the right sound and the right pitch. You may able to do so by adjusting the tuning gears in your guitar.

This may prove to be quite difficult, though, if you settle for guitar with less-quality tuning posts. Most of them can still be able to create the right kind of sound, but they are extremely hard to manage.

3. Learn to compromise. Bear in mind that not all expensive guitars are of great quality, and not all cheap are the best. There are different factors that you need to consider in buying a guitar, but the bottom line is make sure that what you've chosen is affordable as well as of excellent quality. If the price appears to be low or too good to be true, then there must be something really wrong. It will also be helpful if you can test the guitar before you actually buy them. There are already a number of stores that may allow you to play it for a few minutes.

All about Guitar Tabs - For Guitarists

By E Walker

Whether you like it or not, guitar tabs will play a huge role when it comes to playing guitar. You might as well know what they are, their components, and everything else that make up the guitar tabs.

The Overall Structure of the Guitar Tab

Guitar tabs actually look like a standard staff. They are composed of horizontal lines, each line representing the string of the guitar. It's also through the tabs that you can identify if you're playing a bass guitar or an acoustic guitar: the former has 4 lines while the latter has 6 lines. The highest pitch is represented by the highest line while the lowest represents the thickest string in your guitar. Conversely, if you're going to write notes in guitar tabs, the lowest note should be found at the lowest line and the highest at the topmost.

Meanwhile, every note is represented by the letters in the alphabet, and the lines of the tabs are numbered accordingly, depending on how many lines there are. Every number that is written on the line stands for the fret that will be receiving your wanted pitch.

The Difference between Guitar Tabs and Standard Staff

At first glance, you may assume that the guitar tabs and standard staff notation are the same. The truth is they're not. They have a number of differences, which make it easier for you to determine whether you're dealing with a guitar tab or not.

For example, the tabs of the guitar are highly similar to the fretboard. It's also one of the reasons why it's easier for you to learn guitar even when you're going to deal with various guitar tabs. Moreover, unlike the usual staff notation where you can also see the measure and the beat, with guitar tabs, you can also identify the correct position of your fingers. Each of the fingers is also represented by a number, from 1 to 4. The thumb is not included.

Tablatures can also be converted to ASCII file, or plain text. You can make use of symbols, letters, and numbers. This way, you can at least have a good visual representation of the tablature. This also allows anyone share various guitar tabs of different kinds of music even in the World Wide Web. Most of all, tablatures are more specific to the kind of instrument you're playing. Tabs used in violin are entirely different with the ones utilized by those who are playing the guitar.

4 Basic Tips for Your Blues Acoustic Guitar

By Zack R

Acoustic music is one of the most well-received kinds of contemporary music these days. After all, how can you ever ignore a person who seems to be baring his/her soul with an almost-a-capella rendition of a particular song? There's no other instrument than can go with his/her voice than an acoustic guitar.

There are a lot of people who believe that blues acoustic playing is really easy. Usually, the songs played are slow, which can give them ample time to position their fingers at the right keys. They also don't have to think about complementing other sounds that may com from the drums or the keyboards. But then again, there's also plenty of room of mistake, and one wrong move can eventually destroy the entire presentation.

Here are 4 basic tips when it comes to playing acoustic guitar:

1. Match your height with your guitar. One of the most important things in acoustic blues guitar playing is that you have to be extremely comfortable with it. If you have a constant gig, then you're going to be utilizing the instrument the whole time. You should have no reason to feel sore for carrying it all over your shoulder. Hence, make sure that you pick a guitar that's the right size for you. This will also help you reach out to the keys more easily.

2. Adjust the strings to the proper pitch of the song. It's highly essential that you truly have an ear for music. This will help you determine if the music requires a low or high pitch. Depending on the real pitch of the song, you need to adjust the tuning pegs of your acoustic guitar accordingly. When you tighten the strings, you are in for a high pitch. Conversely, a low pitch is produced if you're going to loosen the guitar strings.

3. Start with standard tuning first. This is considered the default mode in acoustic guitar and thus real easy. If you're a beginner, you better start with standard tuning before you decide to play on some more complicated notes. You simply need to match the tune of your guitar to the pitch of the song. All six strings should be compatible with the sound produced by the singer.

4. Use a pick. You can always make use of your fingers, but if they get burned out for long playing moments, you will surely get distracted, and you won't be able to play as better as before. Moreover, fingers don't really create a much louder sound, which you may need when you're playing in a large crowd. The best solution to this is to use a pick.

Watch Live TV Online For Free - Find Out How Easy It Is!

By Davion Wong

To be able to watch live TV online for free is a dream come true for many. But that is provided that you know how to. You may not know that there are actually a few ways to do that.

There are quite a handful of websites that let you watch live TV online for free. Some stream the TV programs so that you can watch it once you visit their site, while others require you to download and install an application or software in order to be able to enjoy the TV.

As exciting as it may sound, the opportunity of getting free TV channels right on your PC has certain flaws. The beauty of grabbing free stuff comes along with shoddy quality most of the time. Fair enough: you get what you pay for.

If you are not equipped with the fastest internet broadband connection, then live streaming can be rather useless for you. Other than the connection speed, if your graphics card and processor are slow, watching live TV is going to be quite a challenge. Though you can still technically watch live TV online for free, expect disruptions every now and then. If you are an impatient person, forget this.

In terms of channel selection, you may occasionally get lucky and dig out a few channels of your interest. However, what you get in most cases are news, movie trailers, chopped music videos and a few international channels (unfortunately, either too boring or in rare local languages).

While it seems that the other options are all undesirable, the revolutionary PC satellite TV has saved the situation. When you download and install the software, you can practically tune into channels from thousands of TV stations worldwide. The cost of enjoying endless hours of live news, sports games, TV shows, movies, music channels and all is just a one-time charge you pay for the software. There are no recurring bills to worry about.

Rest assured, you will get all these channels and programs absolutely legally as they are Free to Air TV Broadcasts. In other words, satellite stations themselves let you watch live TV online for free. Good quality and easy access is guaranteed thanks to the software application, which will work with any connection speed and computer configuration.

Cable and satellite providers are no longer the king of the game today. With a whole lot more options online, seeing more TV channels online is a reality come true. Take a look at the demo of the software at my blog and see how you can watch live TV online for free using this tool.

Best Way To Change Strings on Your Steel Guitar

By E Walker

I'd like to share my thoughts about steel guitars and string changing. I've found over the years that If you play your guitar (It doesn't matter what brand) 1 hour a day you should change your strings between 10 to 14 days. If you play more often than that you should change every week. If you didn't play a note on your guitar for three weeks you'd still need to change them. Just tuning to 440 and doing nothing stretches the life and flexibility out of the strings after a few weeks.

Professional Guitarists all over the world will agree that the most they can hope for is a weeks worth of use, out of a set of strings, because of the bends they make. This pales in comparison to the bending and constant stretching that pedal steels do. If you are breaking strings or having tuning problems, chances are you're not changing often enough.

I know that it is expensive so if you can't afford to change as often as you need, try changing the plain gauges each week & the wound strings every two weeks. Changing strings compares to changing the oil in your car. You wouldn't go 15000 miles per change and expect your engine to sound and perform right. Steel guitars are machines as well as a music producing source.

I know all the cliche's, "you don't like the sound of new strings" or "I don't change them until they break"! Modern manufactured steels have become state of the art. Strings are still being made the way they were 40 yrs. ago. They can't take the constant stretching from the pedals over a long period, and still keep their sustain and tuning. When I lived in Detroit I kept strings on forever until they either broke or started to have that awful zinging sound. I've been there...done that.

In the studio I change every 3 to 7 days. Guitarists change generally every day. Acoustic guitarists change for every 3 hr session. Sometimes they get a good set that lasts all day. That's how important strings are to the tuning and tonality of the instruments you hear on records.

It's important to have a well tuned instrument. I've seen all the posts about "How we should tune" but nothing about the strings that we are trying to tune.

Here are the gauges I recommend for the E9th:

F#----013 Eb----015 G#----011 or 012 E-----014 B-----018 or 017 G#----020 or 021 plain (I don't know of anyone in Nashville using a wound string here. If there is he would be the exception to the rule!) F#----024 or 026 Wound E-----030 D-----034 B-----036 or 038

Any combination of these gauges have all been tried by the pro's and proven to be equally balanced for the best tone possible.

The Secrets of Blues Guitar Improvisation

By Zack Roberts

The only way to be able to invent as you go is to really know the layout of your fretboard and to be able to access the music anywhere on the neck at any time. There are a few ways to do this, but some are more effective than others, in my opinion.

Learning where all the notes are

It is, of course, imperative that you are able to name any note on the fretboard, to be able to say That's an A or that's a C#. To simply plough away by feel or intuition is a beautiful thing, but if you're serious about playing music, you've got to know what you're doing. Music is a system with rules and regulations, and you must be able to follow them to really make music. However, having said that, knowing where all your notes are at all times is not going to help all that much because music is context. Knowing where all your notes are reveals no context, so don't spend too much time on that task. There's a better way of learning where all your notes are than just memorizing their positions and I'll describe it down the page.

Knowing your scales

Ugh! Scales. How I hated the idea of learning my scales when I was a beginner. Do, Re, Mi... too much like school. Way too boring. I shunned the idea for years, and I'm happy to say that I did finally learn my scales, but from the inside out: from my knowledge of chords. I love chords -- they ARE music, they ARE the context I mentioned before. Scales do nothing for me. I see chords as crystallized scales and now, when I look down at my fretboard, I see my chords first, then, weaving their way through and around the chord, I see the scale. I see it as major or minor, or augmented or diminished or as the appropriate mode. To me, when I'm playing, there's only one scale, the one that belongs to the chord of that moment. If the chord is major, then it's a major scale; if the chord is dom7, then I see it as a Mixolydian mode; if the chord is minor, then I see the scale as minor; if it's augmented, I see that raised fifth there, ready to be incorporated into the music. Not only that, I see the chord/scale everywhere on the fretboard, and I can dip in and out of it at any time, either melodically or chordally or harmonically.

Knowing your chords

This is where to start. If you concentrate your efforts on knowing your chords, all the above will fall into place automatically. The task of knowing your chords, and I mean REALLY knowing your chords, is made easier on the guitar by the fact that you can move shapes up and down and retain their quality. It's much easier than it sounds. I've spent my whole playing life, 43 years now, reducing the amount of information I have to process down to the least possible. That's my thing. I don't want to clutter my thinking with anything that can be incorporated into something else. In a very real way, I see chords as just one "cosmic" chord. It's a major triad: I, III and V. One, Three and Five; if it's minor, the III is one fret flat; if it's sus4, the III is replaced by a IV; if it's augmented, the V is raised by one fret; if it's major 7th, then there's an extra note added: the VII. Etcetera, etc. The trick is "seeing" the pure "cosmic" chord there the whole length of the fretboard so that the modifications can be done to it. Most people see chords as clusters of notes like you see in those little diagrams. I see my whole fretboard as the chord. We all know that there are several positions for the same chord. What I'm seeing is all of them together, all joined up continuous.

The trouble with explaining the workings of music is that by calling different aspects by different names -- notes, scales, chords, double-stops, harmony, melody -- the beginner rightfully thinks they're all separate elements that need to be learned independently. In fact, they're all the same thing. When I hear the words "G seventh", my mind's eye conjures up a fretboard... a G7th fretboard. I'm seeing the I, III, V and flatVII in G. Now my fretboard is ready for action. I can play chords, triads, double stops, melody -- whatever I choose -- and it will all be G7th. If the words were "G minor 7th" then the fretboard adjusts itself to Gm7th. Again, I'm ready for anything. I can see all possibilities.

The chord says it all.

I once had a bit of a debate with a fellow twanger on one of the forums out there. I was advocating that the chord says it all, he was saying that scales/modes were the answer. I asked him to analyse one of my instrumentals and tell me what scale/mode I was using. He wrote back saying something like "as soon as I heard the D9th chord, I knew you'd be using the Mixolydian mode..." My point exactly: the chord said it all. The D9th chord obliged me to play certain notes, in this case a mode. To me, I was just playing against a D9th chord, using the notes relevant to that chord. I have never once thought of "modes" in all my years of playing. All I do is know which key I'm in and follow the chord of the moment, and the mode simply is. No need to think about it, let alone ascribe to it some Greek name.

Once you REALLY know your chords, you'll be able to name every note on the fretboard really quickly AND you'll be able to name the III and V of that chord too. If, for example, I'm asked to name all Bb's on my fretboard, I "see" my Bb fretboard and pick out all the tonics. I can also instantly name and locate all the D's and F's, because they're part of the Bb chord too. Context. Music is context, and the more you can learn about the context, the quicker you'll be inventing and creating as you go... improvising.

How Did Country Music Started?

By E Walker

The hillbilly music of the south is a genre of music that is beginning to grow at an immense rate throughout the United States. Originating in Bristol Tennessee, country music is a type of music that integrates the blues, jazz and originally some "hillbilly folk" with a bit of swing, and just recently some pop has been added to the sound. The lyrics represent the "faithfully charted vicissitudes of the working-class life; as Charlie Rich put it, "life's little ups and downs". The music is nearly 73 years old, and is just now starting to touch people.

In 1927, a man by the name of Ralph Peer signed Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family, who would later set the sound for country music. Jimmie Rodgers was born in Mississippi and his favorite type of music to sing was "nigger blues", which is what he brought to the country industry.

African American musicians wound up having a huge impact on the country music sound. Mainly because on one side there was the "colored section" and the "white trash" section. Because of how close the two communities were, the songs that each would sing would influence the other (Scherman, 1994). A lot of the African American sound can be heard through jazz and blues. Many of the early country artists were "hillbillies", singing their folk music. However, country music is NOT folk music.

When Gene Autry went to Hollywood in 1934 and became "the movies first singing cowboy" the image of the cowboy stuck with the "hillbilly sound" (Scherman, 1994). Gene Autry's biggest rival was Roy Rogers. Roy Rogers starred in over 100 movies and headed his own television show (Walker, 1997). Roy Rogers was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1988.

It was only a few years later when he was on top of the charts once again (Walker 1997). In 1934, Rogers formed the Sons of the Pioneers, an early country western band (Walker 1997).

With the help of Bob Wills, western swing was born. "The style was a blend of big band, blues, dixieland, and jazz among others" (Walker, 1997). Originating in Texas and Oklahoma in the 1930's (Walker, 1997). Bob Wills famous "falsetto cry" of "Ah-hahh" was adopted by the WWII American pilots, whenever the pilots would celebrate a hit. During this time, Southern California became America's western swing capital (Scherman, 1994).

The Shaggy Dog - Disney's First Ever Live Action Comedy

By Steve Collins

The Shaggy Dog is a black and white 1959 Walt Disney movie about a youngster who is transformed into a sheep dog by a magic ring. Aside from its comic merit, it is noteworthy as being the first Walt Disney live-action comedy ever made. A testament to its appeal is the number of remakes and spin-offs based on this source material.

The Shaggy Dog most famously starred Fred MacMurray as Wilby's father, Wilson. MacMurray had entertained a run of success in the late 30's and throughout the 40's, straddling the fence between likeable rubes and hardboiled heels. One of his more unforgettable roles was that of Walter Neff, the insurance salesman in Billy Wilder's 1944 classic Double Indemnity. By the early and mid 50's, however, MacMurray had experienced a dearth of suitable roles. The Shaggy Dog was essentially, and reluctantly, his second wind. The success of the film catapulted MacMurray back into the limelight and led to his being cast in The Absent-Minded Professor, Son of Flubber, and, perhaps most famously, in the long-running television show My Three Sons.

The plot follows the misadventures of Wilby Daniels, played by Tommy Kirk, a teenager perpetually misunderstood by his father, Wilson, played famously by Fred MacMurray. Wilson thinks his son is out of his mind due to the number of crazed, and dangerous, inventions the young man creates. On a whim, Wilby and his cohort, Buzz Miller, played by Tim Considine, escort a new French exchange student, played by Roberta Shore, to the local museum. Once there, Wilby is separated from the others and stumbles upon Professor Plumcutt, played by Cecil Kellaway. The professor informs him about the legend of the Borgia family and their shape-shifting ways. Incredulous, Wilby accidentally finds the Borgia ring, wherein he reads its inscription, and is transformed into the French student's Old English sheepdog. The crux of this transformation and misadventure is the fact that Wilby's father "hates dogs." Wilby and Buzz are soon involved in a case of espionage centered on the French exchange student, Francesca, who turns out to be more than meets the eye.

In 1976, Disney released a sequel to The Shaggy Dog, entitled The Shaggy D.A. It followed the adventures of a fully grown Wilby Daniels, played by Dean Jones. It was a modest success, but never lived up to the appeal of the original. In 1988, this was followed by a made-for-television third installment entitled The Return of the Shaggy Dog.

In 2006, Disney released a very loose "remake" of the original feature with an entirely different story and characters, unrelated to the original trilogy. It met with modest success. As a tie-in with the theatrical release of the 2006 film, the original 1959 movie was re-issued in the United States as a special DVD entitled "The Wild & Wooly Edition." This new edition featured two versions of the movie: the original black and white version and the newer colorized version.

Standard E9th Tuning for Country Guitar

By E Walker

Sometimes it might seem that there are as many ways of tuning a pedal steel as there are pedal steel players. But if you strip the personal touches and enhancements from the guitars of the most players, you'll find a common denominator of 3 pedals and 3 knee levers. In most instructional material, the pedals are called A, B and C, and the knee levers are called D, E and F.

This basic arrangement provides multiple inversions of all of the major and minor chords, all of the fundamental country and blues licks, and a healthy assortment of jazz chords. I've been playing for over 20 years, and I'm sure that there are a lot of positions and licks in the basic 3+3 setup that I still don't know.

Most steel players don't strum chords, but they understand where the notes of the chord can be found on their instrument. The close intervals in the tuning make it necessary to skip strings to get the simple triad harmonies. For example, the open position includes all the notes of an E major chord on strings 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 10.

A long time ago, steel players used pedals to simply change tunings. They would play a passage in an E tuning, for example, and then press the pedals to play the next passage in an A tuning. This technique is still useful in blues and old-timey music, where a more primitive sound is desired.

Modern pedal steel playing includes the use of pedals while the strings are sounding and the bar is in motion. For example, the modern player player may pick strings in the I (no pedals) position, then slide up three frets, activating the VI (pedal A + knee F) position during the slide for a smooth transition up to the next inversion of the triad.

Another modern steel technique involves playing complete melodies using pedals instead of moving the bar. If you look carefully at the tuning chart, you can see that almost two full octaves of the E major and A major scales are available at the nut of the guitar. These scales are of course movable up the neck with the bar. The scale "licks" available using pedals at the I and IV positions are a large part of the modern country sound.

I hope this little article has served to demystify the E9th tuning a bit. It's intimidating at first - all those strings, all those pedals and levers - but the theory behind it is really fairly simple. Where a guitarist uses fingers to play notes on different frets, the steel player uses pedals to bring those notes to the barred fret.

As with any instrument, there's the familiar routine: learn your scales, learn your chords, Practice! If you're a good guitarist, chances are you could be a good steel player. It's easier than it looks, and steel players are always in greater demand than lead guitarists. A word of caution, though - once you start making "that sound", you may never look back. This may just be the world's most pleasurable addiction...

Mastering The Major Scale and Intervals For Guitar Playing

By Zack Roberts

The major scale (or Ionian mode) is a scale that was derived from the C note on a piano, it is all the white keys across the octave from C to C, these being C, D, E, F, G,A ,B , C. This scale is said to be natural, as it contains no sharps or flats.

This scale can be represented as numbers, these are:

Root (1), 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, Octave (8)

The above is the fundamental building block to any scales and chords.

This is the C Major scale in its first position:

E -------------------------------------------------------------- B ---------------------------------------0---1----------------- G -----------------------------0---2--------------------------- D ---------------0---2---3------------------------------------ A -----------3------------------------------------------------- E --------------------------------------------------------------

As you can see from the above the notes are all centralised around the C Major Chord, this is said to be the parent chord, in this case, in the C position. The notes that are in the C Major chord are C, E and G. From the scale in number format we can see that these are the Root, 3, and 5. This is the basis for any Major chord.

This scale can be moved around the neck of the guitar, providing the intervals remain the same.

i.e.

E -------------------------------------------------------------- B -------------------------------------------------------------- G ------------------------------2---4---5--------------------- D ------------------2---3--5---------------------------------- A -----------3--5---------------------------------------------- E --------------------------------------------------------------

The notes are the same, but the position on the neck has slightly changed. From the above we can see that there is still a C major chord underlying, but not the most obvious as indicated above. The C Major chord under this scale would be a barred A Major, shifted up the neck by 3 frets (a Minor Third). This scalar position is said to be in the A position. Although there are 7 different notes within the C Major scale there are only five positions a scale can be learnt in. These are being C, A, G, E and D. As these five chords are the basis for all chords played. I.e. an F Major is a barred E major, raised by a minor second. A B Major is an, A major raised by a major second.

Learning the major scale in this way will give an easy and flawless transition between rhythmic and melodic playing.

Try it, comp a C Major Chord for one bar, then play the C position scale straight afterwards, playing the scale in eighth notes (i.e. 1+ 2+ 3+ 4+) and then repeat the comping of the chord.

This will also help you visualise what intervals create which sounds.

The use of a drone note, will also help you understand the intervals of the major scale, as they will always be played against its parent, this is what you do when you tune your guitar.

E.g.

Try the E Major scale on one string.

The E major scale is:

E F# G# A B C# D# E

Use the open E as a drone.

D ------2----4----6----7----9-----11----13-----14------ A ------------------------------------------------------------- E ---0--------------------------------------------------------

Understanding Camera Resolution

By Barry Craft

Before rushing off to buy that premium photo paper so you can have your digital photos in hand, there are a few things to know when preparing for a digital print. It can be as simple as upload and print. But, if you want the maximum quality, clearest resolution, and the most vibrant and true colors, follow these tips used by professional photographers and graphic artists every time they print.

First of all you may have seen two acronyms, PPI and DPI. Many people believe they are the same thing. Although they both define the resolution of your pictures they are used to describe different processes.

PPI simply means pixels per inch. In other words, this is the total number of pixels in a certain area captured by your camera's sensor when you take the picture. This defines how much digital information is actually contained for that image. You can enlarge the picture or increase the DPI, however the picture which has become grainy or blotchy which is known as pixelation.

Images become pixelated when there are not enough pixels in the image to accurately represent every color and line. Therefore, you get a lot she mosaic appearance. You can tell when the resolution is too low because lines are not as smooth as they should be and colors can appear blotchy.

This is where the quality of your camera is important because the more pixels you have in your photograph from the more options you have regarding size and resolution. The better quality the input the better the outcome will be.

Dots per inch otherwise known as DPI is term used in the printing industry and refers to how small and close together the dots are that make up a color image. Take a look at a magazine or newspaper up close sometime and you will see what I mean.

Learning Guitar Scale Degrees The Easy Way

By Zack Roberts

In this article we will define Scale Degrees, their names and explain them and their relevance in our theory studies. As you have learned in Nathan's excellent lesson on the Major Scale, each note of the scale is different. This trait is inherent to building a scale as no note in a scale may be repeated. In an effort to better understand the differences between the notes, we will explore Scale Degrees.

Will will use the Major Scale as our starting point. There are other scales and this information does hold true for most of them. Later, we will briefly touch on other scales and their related Scale Degrees.

The Major Scale Again, as you have already learned, the Major Scale consists of 7 separate tones. Here is the C Major Scale again as review:

C / D / E / F / G / A / B

Each one of these notes is given a designation through a Scale Degree Name. The names are in order and they stay in that order no matter what Major Scale is being used. Here are the Degree Names corresponding to their notes in the scale.

C - Tonic D - Supertonic E - Mediant F - Subdominant G - Dominant A - Submediant B - Leading Tone

Now, lets review each Scale Name and why it is called what it is. Important to recognize is the fact that the distances referred to here are in reference to the scales in their original mode. Once sub modes are considered, the distances from one note to the next note change. However, this is understood and when one refers to Degree Names, it is assumed that the original mode is being used. Also, in our previous lesson on Intervals, we learned that there are Major and minor 3rds and diminished and Perfect 5ths and that those intervals are comprised of various numbers of half steps. When dealing with 3rds, 5ths and 7ths in scales however, the counting method is used. Later, in this lesson, we will learn that Roman Numerals are also used to relate Scale Degrees. However, for our 3rd, 5th and 7th counting, Arabic numbers will suffice and are used as follows. Again, using the C Major Scale.

C - 1 D - 2 E - 3 F - 4 G - 5 A - 6 B - 7

So, when we speak of the third of C in the C Major Scale, we simply count C as 1, D as 2 and E as 3. Of course, the C - E interval is a Major 3rd (four half steps) however, this step is not required as numbering the Scale works perfectly.

Tonic The Tonic is the focal point of the scale. The scale derives its name from the Tonic, the above is a C Major Scale. Likewise, all of the other scale degrees are so named by their relationship to the Tonic. Any piece of music written using a certain scale will use the Tonic as its focal point.

Supertonic The Supertonic is one whole step above the Tonic. This holds true for the Major and minor Scales.

Mediant The Mediant is a 3rd above the Tonic. It is also midway between the Tonic and the Dominant. The mediant is the 3rd of our scale. 3rds or Tertian Harmony, are that upon which chords are based. It is important to recognize the Mediant or 3rd of any scale. You will see it again and again and your knowledge of theory grows.

Subdominant The Subdominant is located a 5th below the Tonic. This is the first time we have been asked to count backward from the Tonic. Let's review that for a moment. If we start at C and recite the scale backwards we have:

C / B / A / G / F / E / D

As we reviewed at the start of this lesson, a simple numbering of the scale is how 3rds, 5ths and 7ths are found. If we count backward from our Tonic, F is the 5th below the Tonic. While the Subdominant can also bo considered a 4th above the Tonic, it is important to recognize the 5th below element as that is where its name is derived. I will explain further in the Dominant definition.

Dominant The Dominant is located a 5th above the Tonic. Now is a good time to review the Subdominant. Sub meaning below gives us our reason why we counted the Subdominant as a 5th below the Tonic. The 5th or Dominant is so named because of its dominating role in harmony and melody. The Dominant is the 5 in the R+3+5, or Tertian Harmony, method of constructing chords.

Submediant Can you guess the relation and location of this degree just based on the name? Since the Mediant is a 3rd above the Tonic, the Submediant is a 3rd below the Tonic. The same counting method that we used in the Subdominant definition can be used here.

Leading Tone The Leading Tone is one half step below the Tonic. When playing a scale, one often ends on the octave above the Tonic. Since the Leading Tone is only one half step away from the Tonic, hearing the Leading Tone leaves the listener wanting to hear the Tonic as resolution to the scale. The Leading Tone leads the listener back to the Tonic.

Subtonic In minor scales the 7 degree is not a half step below but rather a whole step below the Tonic. This awkwardness of the minor scales is resolved with the different forms of the minor scales but that will be a different lesson. Just note that the 7 degree scale name in minor scales is Subtonic.

The Roman Numerals Scales Degrees are also described using Roman Numerals. While they do range from 1-7, the Roman Numerals serve another purpose. Nathan described in his lesson on the Major Scale the chords that are derived from that scale. When Roman numerals are used to describe Scale Degress, the also describe that chord related to that degree by appearing in upper or lower case. Here is an example:

C - I D - ii E - iii F - IV G - V A - vi B - vii

While it may appear a bit strange to see Roman Numerals in lower case, this is an accepted method of showing Scale Degrees and their related chords. An upper case indicates a Major chord, a lower case indicates a minor chord and lower case with this symbol indicates and diminished chord. The pattern of Major and minor chords is the same for any Major Scale. It will always be.

Playing The Blues Guitar Shuffle Rhythm

By Zack Roberts

So you have understood the 12-bar blues or at least the concept of it and you would like to push your blues playing to higher grounds.

Well your in luck my friend! This article will explain what the blues shuffle rhythm is all about

The best way to liven up up your playing is to learn the blues shuffle rhythm. I am not sure where the name derives from, but the shuffle is a term used to identify the break down of a beat into 2 components where the first is lengthier than the second.

The blues shuffle rhythm is founded on an eighth note triplet rhythm. A triplet is when you use 3 notes in a given time space instead of two. In a standard 4/4 time signature where there is four quarter notes the eighth notes would be counted as...

1-&-2-&-3-&-4-& ... where the &'s are the eighth notes between each quarter. to fill the same time signature with eighth note triplets we'd count as...

1-trip-let-2-trip-let-3-trip-let-4-trip-let ... where the trip's and let's are eighth notes amounting up to 3 per quarter note. So basically...

1-& = 1-trip-let

The blues shuffle is accomplished by playing the first and third notes in a series of triplets. And so if the count is...

1-trip-let-2-trip-let-3-trip-let-4-trip-let ... then you'll be playing on all the down-beats or numbers and the let's. I've indicated the notes you should be striking to better exemplify.

1-trip-let-2-trip-let-3-trip-let-4-trip-let.

To discover what the shuffle rhythm actually sounds like try hearing to Led Zeppelin's - You Shook Me or Grateful Dead's - Truckin

I hope this has cleared up any confusion you may have been having about the blues shuffle rhythm

Learn How To Draw By Looking More Carefully

By Michael Dale

When somebody says they can't draw... Is it true?

In reality, most people draw each and every day.

The basic function of drawing is to make marks onto a surface to communicate ideas and information. Making marks is usually done with pictures and writing.

"If you are capable of writing... you are equally capable of drawing"

Drawing pictures uses the same skills as writing a message.

When you write you don't think about what it is you are doing...

* You are forming lines

* You are drawing circles

* You are creating curves

Writing becomes an instinctive act because you were taught from an early age. Because you have been writing for so long it becomes natural.

When you are drawing you use the same skills as when you are writing...

* You can use a series of lines to draw a house

* You use a combination of curves to draw a face

This means that you can learn to draw. The only thing stopping you is that it will take your time and effort to develop your drawing skills.

Take a pen or pencil and challenge yourself to draw a cat or a dog. Don't be too concerned if the result isn't too good. Your drawing could appear very different from what you would expect.

This is no great surprise to you. You already know that you can't draw.

However, it could surprise you to learn that many artists would struggle to get an exact likeness.

The biggest challenge when you learn to draw is to sharpen your powers of observation.

Take a closer look at a cat and dog. Look at the head...

* See the shape of the head

* See how the ears are placed on top

* See the eyes

* Look at the nose

In seconds you discover a better understanding. The picture in your mind will be strong and crystal clear...

"Now, go and try to draw your cat or dog again and see the sudden improvement in your drawing"

Pedal Steel Guitar with C Scale Tuning

By E Walker

In this article, I will talk about using C Scale tuning for pedal steel country guitar playing. This tuning lends itself easily to most musical forms, including classical, new age, jazz, and adult comtemporary. In modern pop and dance music, it turns the pedal steel guitar into a versatile controller for the latest electronic effects.

Once the tuning is learned, fast scale runs with tight harmonies are nearly as easy on the pedal steel as they are on a piano keyboard. In progressive rock, the steel guitarist can work a level playing field with other band members without fear of accidently "countrifying" the band's sound. The tuning is likewise at home in orchestral music, show tunes and film scores.

On the other hand, it's nearly impossible to coax the Nashville pedal steel sound from this tuning. Country dobro and blues licks are available, of course, but the characteristic full step bend is missing. The western swing style is also compromised because it relies on full step pedal changes within strummed chords. Bluegrass, with its reliance on fast arpeggios and pentatonic runs, is another form that's harder to play in the C Scale tuning than in the standard Nashville E9th.

A scale-based pedal steel tuning has firm historical roots and a solid foundation in music theory. The C Scale tuning in particular can be applied to either inexpensive or professional level instruments for musicians who have little interest in country music but want to play the pedal steel guitar. It permits a wide variety of musical expression and makes it easier to play fast diatonic music in any key.

Mastery of a scale-based tuning can expand a steel guitarist's musical vocabulary. For professional country musicians, it's a good choice for the rear neck of a double neck instrument. For those involved exclusively in other forms of music, the C Scale tuning effectively blocks the accidental use of undesirable country music cliches, especially the "full step bend".

The Birth of the Pioneering Disney Studios

By Steve Collins

The Walt Disney Company was created in 1923 by brothers Walt and Roy Disney in Los Angeles. The Disney brothers started by creating a series of live-action/animated short films communally named The Alice Comedies. Within four months of the first screenings, the brothers were forced to relocate to larger facilities, dubbed "Disney Bros. Studio." According their official website, in 1925 the Disney brothers placed a deposit on a lot on Hyperion Avenue in the Silver Lake district of Los Angeles. This lot would house the Disney Studio for the next 14 years, seeing the beginning of such beloved characters as Mickey Mouse, Pluto, Goofy, and Donald Duck.

In fact, it was Walt Disney's wife Lillian Marie Disney who gave Mickey Mouse his name. Her husband wanted to name his new character Mortimer Mouse. She claimed this suggestion was one of her prouder moments. Representative of Mickey's victory and popularity was the rewarding of a special Academy Award for "Mickey Mouse" in 1932. Mickey was colorized in 1935 and soon his friends were drawn in their own individual series. Donald Duck and Pluto would all get their own series in 1937, while Goofy would get a solo series in 1939. Again, according to the Disney website, of all of Mickey's friends, only Donald Duck would rival the beloved mouse's popularity. The two characters shared the screen first in 1934, in a cartoon called Orphan's Benefit.

The cartoon shorts would make way in 1937 for the pioneering full-length animated feature, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Snow White was met with phenomenal acclaim and success, solidifying Disney's brilliance. This world-wide acclaim prompted Disney to secure 51 acres of property in Burbank and break ground on an entirely new studio dedicated to making animated films.

Walt Disney was personally involved with designing the new studio, right down to the smallest details. From the layout of the buildings to the design of the animators' chairs, nothing missed his keen eye. His goal was creating a self-sufficient, state-of-the-art production facility that could oversee all the sides of animation, from start to finish. He also had separate buildings dedicated to each facet of animation, including Inking and Painting and the Camera building where the artwork was completed and photographed. All of the post-production work was completed in the Cutting building. These buildings were connected together by an complex system of underground tunnels so nothing could disrupt production, including bad weather. To preserve a campus feel, Disney had all the utilities sunk underground to prevent any unsightly views.

It was from this pioneering studio in Burbank that Disney would bring many of its beloved family films, including Fantasia, Bambi, Cinderella, Alice In Wonderland, and Peter Pan.

Use C Scale Tuning for the Pedal Steel Guitar

By E Walker

The pedal steel guitar tunings currently in common use hinder the acceptance of the instrument in musical forms other than American "Country" music. The addition of pedals greatly extends the capabilities of a steel guitar. Just as the logical extension of a chordal tuning is to give the player more chords at every fret, a scale tuning can be logically extended to give the player more scales at every fret.

Elementary music theory teaches us that the C scale can be altered to an F scale by flatting one note (B to Bb), and then to a Bb scale by flatting one more (E to Eb). In a similar fashion, the C scale can be altered to a G scale by sharping one note (F to F#), and then altered to a D scale by sharping one more (C to C#).

A third flat is accomplished by lowering the A to Ab, which in conjunction with the other two flatting changes makes an Eb scale. Likewise, a raise of the G to G# can be applied with the other two raises to create an A scale.

Thus, a pedal steel with 3 lowers and 3 raises can easily produce seven different scales at any fret. Applying these concepts to two pedals and four knee levers on an 8 string version of Jerry Byrd's tuning yields the following pedal steel tuning:

The remaining five scales (E, B, F#, Ab and Db) are available at the first fret. Using this system, the player is never more than one fret away from any key signature at any fret.

This simple extension of Jerry Byrd's tuning to the pedal steel requires a very low level of mechanical changer technology. Each string is altered in only one direction, and by only one pedal or knee lever. This "single raise or single lower" concept makes the tuning easy to set up on inexpensive "student model" instruments.

In contrast, the Nashville E9th requires a "double raise and single lower" changer to set up the standard pedal and knee lever changes. The advanced machinery required by the Nashville E9th tuning raises the price of student instruments beyond what many can afford.

A Justifiable Omission

You have probably noticed by now that the D note is absent from this tuning. This deliberate omission is to accommodate the nuances of just temperment. Many steel guitarists are attracted by the beauty of pure physical harmonies. If the guitar is to be tuned to natural string harmonics, the tuning of the D note becomes a dilemna.

Given C as a starting point, G is tuned to a perfect fifth and F to a perfect fourth. The A string is tuned as a perfect third of the F, using the F string's harmonic point below the 4th fret as a reference. Similarly, the E and B strings are tuned as perfect thirds from the C and G strings, respectively.

The dilemna is that a D note that is in tune with the A string (derived as a third of F) is considerably flat of a D note that is in tune with the G string (derived as a fifth of C).

One of the pedal steel's greatest strengths is its ability to create perfectly tuned (i.e. "just tempered") music in any key. The compromise of the equal tempered scale, required by instruments that have twelve fixed pitches per octave, is not necessary on the steel guitar. While some steel guitarists use an electronic tuner to impose equal temperment on their instruments, forcing the twelve tone compromise as part of the tuning would do a disservice to those players who prefer the "sweeter" sound of just tempered chords.

By omitting the D string, the choice of temperment is left to the player.

Introduction To Pedal Steel Country Guitar

By E Walker

The pedal steel guitar tunings currently in common use hinder the acceptance of the instrument in musical forms other than American "Country" music. An alternate tuning based on the natural C scale is proposed and explained.

Introduction

The pedal steel guitar is a truly amazing musical instrument. It is one of the few instruments that can easily produce any note in the micro-tonal spectrum. Many musical instruments are limited to the notes of the twelve tone musical scale of the piano keyboard. Some instruments can produce notes that fall in between those tones as special effects ("bending" a note), but few can produce those "in-between" notes as easily and predictably as a fretless stringed instrument.

Like the violin, the pedal steel places the precise pitch of each note in the hand of the performer. But even the violin cannot produce full micro-tuned chords - it is limited to two-note harmony (the "double stop") by the curvature of its bridge. The pedal steel has no such limitation. The full potential of the pedal steel includes chordal music subtleties that cannot be performed on any other single instrument.

Why, then, is this remarkable instrument largely ignored by the international music community? The answer lies in the musical tastes of the Americans who invented the pedal steel and pushed the mechanical technology to its current advanced state, and in the large American subculture that appropriated certain pedal steel effects for its own music, called "country" or "country and western".

By and large, the best pedal steel guitarists in the world are the professional players of country music. This de facto association is one factor that works to the detriment of general acceptance of the instrument, but it is not the only factor. The tuning of the instrument makes it very easy to play American country music at the expense of most other musical forms.

The Technical Limitation

The standard E9th or "Nashville" tuning used on most pedal steels today is specifically designed for the country and western genre. This tuning spans an octave in the space of 5 strings. Pedals and knee levers are engaged to produce the remaining notes of a standard diatonic scale. Scale-based runs that include glisses or "bends" to get from one note of the scale to the next are a characteristic effect used in country music. Specifically, the whole tone bend is an effect that is used to excess. It is a recognizable ingredient of the "country sound", even to a casual listener.

Avoiding the whole tone bend effect is a major performance challenge for anyone playing the Nashville tuning. Even for the intermediate level player, fast scale-based melody work remains difficult. Some written passages seem to be beyond the capabilities of the instrument, especially if note bends are not to be permitted. In theory, the pedal steel guitarist should be able to play the right hand part of any piano piece. In practice, the Nashville tuning compromises that ideal.

An Historic Parallel

The pedal steel is a direct ancestor of the Hawaiian electric steel guitar. During its most popular period (the 1930's through the 1950's) the Hawaiian guitar progressed from primitive major chord tunings to tunings based on jazz or swing chords. The sound of those advanced chordal tunings became part of the stereotyping of the instrument in Hawaiian and "western" (as in "country and western") music.

In the 1960's Jerry Byrd, an acknowledged master of the instrument, was approached with a project of difficult Japanese pop music. To accomplish the required degree of melodic expression, Byrd chose to use a scale-based, rather than chord-based, tuning. He called this 7-string tuning a "C Diatonic".

The Japanese album, later released in the USA by the Steel Guitar Record Club, was called Steel Guitar Romantic World. The music profoundly broke the Hawaiian steel guitar stereotype. It did not hint at any Hawaiian or "western" music flavor, because it did not use the characteristic major 6th and dominant 9th chords of those styles.

Within Jerry Byrd's C Diatonic tuning, the next melody or harmony note is usually within easy reach from the fret of the current note. This means that the placement of glisses in the melody can be determined by the arranger or performer, rather than by limitations imposed by the tuning of the instument. In skilled hands, the resultant effect can be a striking departure from the "old timey" flavor most listeners expect from the Hawaiian electric steel guitar.

How To Choose The Right Film School

By Nathan James

Acting seems to be one of the things many people would like to do. It can certainly be rewarding, but it's probably one of the hardest areas of the film industry to break into.

If film and TV are your dream job, there are plenty of other areas you can get into. You could consider directing, producing or even writing scripts, and choosing the right film school is one of the most important decisions you'll make.

The first step towards getting into the film industry is choosing the type of career you want. Almost any job in the industry pays pretty well, so be prepared for lots of competition. You also need to keep in mind that you'll probably be starting from the bottom, commonly as a production assistant (PA) - answering phones, fetching coffee, etc.

You'll also have to think about relocating, since you'll need to move to where the work is. In the film business that may mean you'll be working on location for weeks or even months at a time.

How to Find The Film School That Meets Your Criteria

If you're passionate about becoming an actor, don't choose a film school that specializes in directing. Of course, you need to be familiar with all aspects of the business but you should choose a school that is strong in the area you most want to work.

Look for a school that will let you take specific classes towards your degree instead of giving you a preset course list.

With the way the film industry has been growing in recent years, you'll find film schools popping up all over the place. Make sure you do some thorough research before choosing one so you don't wind up paying a lot of money for a diploma that won't benefit you.

Check to see how long the school has existed and make sure you check their credentials. Some large universities are even starting to offer film degrees, and they are often highly regarded in the film industry so that is another possibility.

Guitar Lessons With The 12 Tone Western Music System

By Zack Roberts

This lesson will cover the names of intervals that we use in our 12 tone Western music system. Also, I will include musical examples as ear training exercises to help you recognize these intervals. Before we proceed, lets review a few musical terms and their definitions.

Definitions: # Western Music System - This is defined as the system that we use to compose music. The basis of which is the 12 tone per octave scale or the Chromatic Scale. # Half Step - This term is defined as the smallest distance there is between two notes in Western music. The distance from A to A# is one Half Step. On the fretboard of the guitar, a Half Step is 1 fret up or down from the current note being played. # Whole Step - This term is defined as the combination of two Half Steps. The distance from A to B is one Whole Step. A to A# being one Half, A# to B being one Half. On the fretboard of the guitar, a Whole Step is two frets from the current note being played. # Sharp (#) - This term and its corresponding symbol is defined as raising the current note one Half Step. A# is one Half Step raised from A. # Flat (b) - This term and its corresponding symbol is defined as lowering the current note one Half Step. Ab is one Half Step lowered from A. # Enharmonic Equivalent - This term is defined as one note or one pitch, that has two different names. G# and Ab are the same note or pitch. The different names are used depending on context. Usually, if one is showing a scale moving upward, sharps are used. If the scale is moving downward, flats are used.

Chromatic Scale The Chromatic Scale is a 12 tone scale from one note to an octave above or below. For example, lets view the C Chromatic Scale: C / C#(Db) / D / D#(Eb) / E / F / F#(Gb) / G / G#(Ab) / A / A#(Bb) / B / C

If you were to play the C note on the third fret of the 5th string and then play every note all the way to the C note on the 15th fret, these are the notes that you would have played. You will probably notice a couple of things right off hand about this scale. First, several notes have two names. These are known as Enharmonic Equivalents. A# is the Enharmonic Equivalent of Bb. Db is the Enharmonic Equivalent of C#. You will also notice that there is no sharp or flat between B and C and between E and F. The reason for this goes back to when our 12 tone system was first being created. If you're interested in music history there are many sources available for further investigation. For now, let it stand that, for the most part, we will not use B#/Cb or E#/Fb. There are times in which you will see these but you need not be concerned about that quite yet.

The interesting thing about the Chromatic Scale and the reason it is included here, is that the scale contains every interval in our Western music system. So, lets take a look at those intervals.

Intervals Intervals are how we define the distance between two notes. Scales and chords are constructed of intervals. An understanding of intervals will help you to better understand the fundamentals of all music. What we will study are the names of the intervals, how each interval is played on the guitar and an example of each interval in music. In the musical examples, the bold face indicates where the interval is in the lyrics. To the right of each interval, you will see the abbreviation that is used for that interval. As a guideline, an upper case letter means Major and Augmented and a lower case letter means minor and diminished.

Unison This interval occurs when the same note of the same pitch is played. Strike the C note twice, that is Unison

Minor 2nd (m2) This interval occurs when two notes are separated by 1 half step. C (5th string, third fret) to C# (5th string, fourth fret) is a Minor 2nd. Examples: The recurring two notes in the theme from the movie "Jaws"

Major 2nd (M2) This interval occurs when two notes are separated by 1 whole step. C (5th string, third fret) to D (5th string, fifth fret) is a Major 2nd. Example: "Happy Birth-day to you."

Minor 3rd (m3) This intervals occurs when two notes are separated by 1 whole step and 1 half step. From this point on, intervals will be described using only half steps, as that is the norm. So, this interval contains three half steps. You will notice, as is logical, that the number of half steps equates to the number of frets between the notes, since one fret up or down is one half step. So, between the two notes in a minor 3rd, there are three frets. C (5th string, third fret) to D# (5th string, sixth fret) is a minor third. Examples: "To dream the impossible dream" and "Oh-o say can you see" (Star Spangled Banner)

Major 3rd (M3) This interval occurs when two notes are separated by four half steps or four frets. C (5th string, third fret) to E (5th string, seventh fret) is a major third. Examples: "From the halls of Montezuma" and "Have your-self a merry little Christmas" and "Well I come from Alabama" (Oh Susanna)

Perfect 4th (P4) This interval occurs when two notes are separated by five half steps. C (5th string, third fret) to F (5th string, eighth fret) is a perfect fourth. You'll no doubt recognize this interval as most of your guitar strings are tuned to perfect fourths! Examples: "Here comes the bride" and "Born free as free as the"

Diminished 5th (d5) This interval occurs when two notes are separated by six half steps. C (5th string, third fret) to F# (5th string, ninth fret) is a diminished fifth. Examples: "Ma-ri-a" (from West Side Story) Okay, maybe not an example that you know, maybe your parent's have it around!

Perfect 5th (P5) This interval occurs when two notes are separated by seven half steps. C (5th string, third fret) to G (5th string, tenth fret) is a perfect fifth. Examples: "Yo-ee-oh" (War chant of the Wicked Witch's guardsmen in The Wizard of Oz)

Minor 6th (m6) This interval occurs when two notes are separated by eight half steps. C (5th string, third fret) to G# (5th string, eleventh fret) is a minor sixth. I don't have an example for this interval.

Major 6th (M6) This interval occurs when two notes are separated by nine half steps. C (5th string, third fret) to A (5th string, twelfth fret) is a major sixth. Examples: "My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean" and the first two tones in the N B C chimes.

Minor 7th This interval occurs when two notes are separated by ten half steps. C (5th string, third fret) to A# (5th string, thirteenth fret) is a minor seventh. Examples: Theme from the original Star Trek (first two notes).

Major 7th This interval occurs when two notes are separated by eleven half steps. C (5th string, third fret) to B (5th string, fourteenth fret) is a major seventh. Examples: The last phrase of "So have yourself a merry little Christmas now."

Octave Okay, well we have made it to the big octave! The interval that occurs when two notes are separated by twelve half steps. C (5th string, third fret) to C (5th string, fifteenth fret) is an octave. Examples: "Some-where over the Rainbow"

So there you have the intervals that make up Western Music system. Practice learning thsese intervals not only by sight, but by sound. Learn to play these intervals and study them in context to chords and scales. See you next time!
