How To Play 12 Bar Blues for Blues Guitar

By Zack R.

Join us as we take a look into some practical tips and advice about mastering blues guitar. We will be examining what the fundamentals of blues are as well as the importance of improvisation, and the benefits of practicing with guitar backing tracks.

Blues guitar is one of the most artistically expressive forms of guitar that exists today. Not many guitarists know this but the blues is the foundation for a variety of different genres that are extremely popular today, including rock, hard rock, metal, and even some hip hop music. There is a lot involved in completely masting blues guitar playing, and it takes a lot of time and dedication to be able to pull it off.

In order to be able to master blues guitar you have to be very familiar with the basic principle of blues music itself. Blues music is one of the only styles of music to actually have a scale named after it. Learning and dominating the blues scale is one of the first key steps to completely mastering blues guitar playing. The blues scale is used in more than blues music. There is a lot of rock music that uses this scale too. So whether you plan on being a blues guitarist or not, this scale is definitely very beneficial to learn and master.

So What Is The 12 Bar Blues?

The 12-bar blues progression is the main foundation and cornerstone of the vast majority of blues tunes out there. As such, to start playing blues, you will need to understand what a 12-bar blues progression is.

The underlying concept of the 12-bar blues is the I-IV-V progression, where I, IV and V represent the chords or notes that you will be using. To this, you will no doubt have two questions that spring to mind immediately, "what is I-IV-V," and how do I use it?"

Let me explain what I-IV-V is all about When you play a blues progression, you will only be required to use 3 chords. The main principle of I-IV-V let you know what are the chords to use, as follows: a slightly oversimplified approach, which happens to work for the keys of A,C,D,E and G, which is enough for right now, is to simply count out the letters of the alphabet starting with the key you're playing in. The first, fourth and fifth letter you count represent the chords that you will be using in your blues progression.

For the key of A we count: A-b-c-D-E-f-g

Thus, for the key of A, we will be using A-D-E as our I-IV-V progression. Similarly if you count out starting with E, you will find that for the key of E we will use E-A-B as our I-IV-V.

Music theory students refer to the I as the "tonic", the IV as the "subdominant", and the V as the "dominant". I will not use these terms in this lesson, but knowing that may help you understand what other people are talking about sometimes.

Chords and Progressions

Another central component to blues is to memorise the chords and chord progressions that are commonly used in blues guitar. Learning these will assist you to produce your own blues progressions and melodies. It's important to remember that not all blues music is played at rapid speeds. Most blues music is played slowly and soulfully. It's as if you can feel the guitarist's soul as he tells a story with his music. Accuracy is the foundation of playing solid, soul-bearing blues music, and not just raw speed.

An integral part of playing and mastering blues guitar is learning how to improvise. After you master the scales and chords, it's time to put them into practice. Improvising is where your creativity and knowledge come together to create passionate blues music. There are a variety of different improvisation techniques that you should practice along with learning your chords and scales.

One of the best ways to fully master blues music is to practice with guitar backing tracks. These backing tracks can improve the productivity of your practice time immensely. It's like practicing with an entire blues band, which will help you develop your improvisation as you put to use your knowledge and solo over the backing tracks. These will produce good, solid structure and timing as you learn to play along with other musicians, and learn to play over key changes. Guitar backing tracks are the secret to success in mastering blues guitar.

Blues Guitar Chords & Progression - BB King Style

By Zack R.

Learning how to play and improvise great blues riffs and licks s is not as easy as it might seem to a novice but the one good thing is that focused learning and practicing with a great blues backing track will help a lot in understanding blues chords and progression.

Using blues backing tracks is an important aspect of playing blues lead guitar. Blues is considered to be one of the origins of jazz music and you will find some influence of blues even in contemporary jazz. Most of the blues music and the ones used in common blues backing tracks are pentatonic scales and the mixolydian scales. These scales can be used in rock too and hence the ones used for blues are enhanced with the blues notes. If you understand the basic of the blue notes then you will be able to improvise over blues backing tracks with ease. Basically, blue notes use a drop in the pitch of the 3rd, 5th and 7th of the major scale. If you hear a professional talk about a blues scale then what they really mean is the pentatonic minor scale with a blue note like b5.

There are many people who jam to blues backing tracks in the C key and the chords used could be C, C7, G7, and F7. If th tracks are meant for a solo then the Am pentatonic scale will be rather useful and perfect to a certain degree. Some of the other options of blues guitar backing tracks include C-minor pentatonic comprising of the c-blues scale and c-major and Bb major scales in Dorian mode.

Blues Chords and Progression

Here are some characteristics of the blues chords and progression, which will unquestionably help you to play great blues guitar effectively:

Most of the blues chord progressions are in a 12 bar form. Apart from this, you will also find 14, 16, 24 or even higher number of bar forms for blues. The tonic chord in blues progression is basically the dominant 7th chord. The blues music has been predominantly defined not only as music that focuses on chord changes as well as scales but also on feeling. There are 3 basic chords in blues and they are all dominant 7th chords.

Some of the blues backing tracks techniques include:

Using hammer-on or even a slide right from b3 to natural 3 Mixing the Mixolydian scale with the dominant blues scale

Mixing scales is probably the best way of enhancing blues backing tracks techniques and some of them are:

Blues Tabs

In the first part, you need to use the C Mixolydian scale with a natural 3. In the second half of the 2nd bar, you need to use the C-minor pentatonic scale using a flat 3. If you really want to pursue blues guitar techniques then the best place to learn is by listening to recording of blues guitarists or legends like Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan. You can also listen to some of the compositions of famous jazz guitarists like Kenny Burrell and George Benson.

What Is The Right Guitar For You?

By Zack Roberts

When it comes to choosing the right guitar for you, the most important point to keep in mind is what kind of music are you looking at playing?

Rock or Blues Guitar Music

If you are looking at playing rock or blues music, the best guitar to go for is an Electric guitar. The key here is to start small and grow big. I have seen so many people go out and buy the most expensive equipment before they can play anything. You may have your heart set on getting big names like a new Gibson Les Paul or a Fender Stratocaster, but the prices are pretty steep.

When choosing your first electric guitar, the best thing to go for is a copy of an original i.e. Plywood. The sound between an original Solid Wood compare to Plywood is a lot better, however plywood is much cheaper. My suggestion is to go for small brands like Legend, Onyx or Orion for now. Once you have mastered the basics, then it is the time to upgrade.

Second hand guitars are another option to go for. There are some great deals going in the local papers. When looking for a guitar, make sure you plug it in and try it out. Grab the strap if need be and put the guitar around your neck. Get every possible bit of information you can before making a decision.

Tips: Keep in mind that when you go for an electric guitar, you will also need an amplifier. There are some great deals going whereby you can choose guitar, amplifier and lead in one package. One final tip is when choosing your guitar; REMEMBER to plug it into an amplifier similar to what you are buying. There is no use testing your guitar through the most expensive amplifier in the shop. It will not sound the same when you play through your own amplifier at home. Choosing the right amplifier is important; therefore it is covered in the next lesson.

Classical Acoustic Music.

The best guitar to go for if you are looking at playing Classic Acoustic music is either Spanish Classic Acoustic Guitar or Steel String Acoustic.

Spanish Classic Acoustic Guitars are extremely light and having nylon strings which are very soft on your fingers. They come in a range of different sizes even very small size for young kids. Spanish Classic Acoustic guitars are also a lot cheaper and easier to maintain than Steel String Acoustic Guitar.

Steel String Acoustic Guitars are a little more expensive compare to Spanish guitars. Again, with acoustic guitars, there is no need to go for big brands when you are first starting out. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable playing it. Also, make sure your fingers fit around the guitar neck and it is not too big for you to play. It depends on you as to whether you want to pickups or not. But remember to test it first before you buy.

There are many possibilities when comes to choosing a guitar. Whether you decide to choose an electric or an acoustic, the fundamentals are the same.

Ask yourself. What style of music are you looking at playing? Classical Acoustic music or Rock music? How keen are you when comes to playing the guitar? How serious are you? What is your budget? Are you looking at getting the best equipment from the beginning or looking at starting small and then upgrading gradually? It is a little difficult to tell at this stage, so your best bet is to keep expenses low and your music education high. Choose a guitar that fits you, suits you, and makes you look good!

Mastering The Blues Scales - Slowhand Blues

By Zack R.

The slowhand blues is the most prominent technique that makes blues music what it is today. Mastering the slowhand blues will require time, effort and focus and above all in-depth understanding of the different blues scales and the blues notes.

Defining blues is not the simplest of things and playing it iwell s a completely different ball game. There are plenty of great blues players and guitarists in the blues hall of fame to learn from. The fact of the matter is that if you are able to master slowhand blues then who knows you might be able to create a great blues record that will take you to the hall of fame too! But then that's just a thought right now. The main focus should be on mastering the blues scale and creating a blues backing track so that you can practice soloing using that.

When we talk about blues, you need to first learn to differentiate between different guitar techniques. You may be able to do impossibly fast runs or stretch your fingers far on the fretboard to play multiple notes but that's not what blues is all about. There is a degree of emotion and feeling that comes with the blues scale and has been well rendered by the likes of BB King, Albert King and Eric Clapton. Eric Clapton is one of the greats who is so versatile that he can play almost all the guitar styles including acoustic or unplugged, electric, slide, fingerpicking, open tunings, among many others but his real root lies in playing slowhand blues.

Starting with Slowhand Blues

Where do you actually start from especially for mastering the slowhand blues? Tough question really but it depends on quite a few elements like personal influences, the specific key, finger size and special patterns also called boxes. Each box has the notes of an octave in an arrangement that will be easy to play. Once you are comfortable with the boxes, it will help you to play with a blues backing track. The boxes or patterns mostly highlight the places where you can bend an important note with your index finger. One of the best ways of mastering the slowhand blues is by spending more time in researching various positions that will help you to play your strings better. Here is an example of a slowhand Blues scale: The A Blues note

I---8---10--I I---8---10--I I-7-8-9-----I I-----------I I-----------I I-----------I

The E minor Blues scale will look like the following:

I-------------------------0-3-I I---------------------0-3-----I I---------------0-2-3---------I I-----------0-2---------------I I-----0-1-2-------------------I I-0-3-------------------------I

The E minor pentatonic scale will be like:

I-------------------------------------12-15-I I-------------------------------12-15-------I I----------------------12-14-15-------------I I----------------12-14----------------------I I-------12-13-14----------------------------I I-12-15-------------------------------------I

A I-----0-2-----------------I E I-0-3---------------------I

You will have to start with an open E-string and when you reach the D-string, go onto the 2nd fret, which is also an E. You need to play both the notes simultaneously so that you can hear it. To make it easier, download some of the blues backing track for the same and practice with it. One more important thing: Never download any midis of blues backing track as it will not help you to understand the scales and the changes.

Dumbo, Disney's 4th Animated Classic

By Steve Collins

In 1941, Walt Disney distributed his fourth animated feature, Dumbo. Based on the children's book of the same name, written by Helen Aberson and drawn by Harold Perl, Dumbo follows the exploits of Jumbo, Jr., a baby elephant. Because of his unnaturally large ears, which give him the power to fly, Jumbo, Jr. is nicknamed "Dumbo." His only companion, other than his mother, is Timothy the mouse.

When Disney submitted his first cut of Dumbo to RKO, their distributor at the time, the studio was troubled to find the running time was only 64 minutes. George J. Schaefer, the president of RKO, demanded Disney either edit the feature down to a short film or beef it up to 70 minutes. Disney refused, and insisted Dumbo be released as an A picture, in the maximum number of theaters nation-wide. Schaefer reluctantly agreed.

It cost Disney only $813,000 to finish Dumbo, which was approximately half the cost of Snow White and a third of the cost of Pinocchio. Along with Snow White, it would be one of the only two feature to turn a profit for Disney during the 1940s. Its original release, in 1941, went on to gross $1.3 million - a monumental success at the time. Indeed, according to Wikipedia, Dumbo was scheduled to grace the December cover of Time magazine, only to be dropped at the last minute to cover the December 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. Indeed, the Second World War would nearly break Disney's young studio as they were quickly recruited by the United States government to create a number of training and propaganda cartoons for the Armed Forces.

Dumbo garnered the nomination for and subsequently won the 1941 Academy Awards for Original Music Score. It was also nominated for Best Song for Frank Churchill and Ned Washington's "Baby Mine" and won the 1947 Cannes Film Festival award for Best Animation Design. The popularity of the movie was capitalized on again during the 1949 re-release, making a tremendous profit for both RKO and Disney.

Dumbo was one of the first features to be aired on television as part of Disney's anthology series, cementing its popularity for an entire new generation of American viewers. In 1981, it was the first Disney film to be released on VHS. In 2006, the 60th Anniversary Special Edition was released to wide acclaim, while a special edition "Big Top Edition" was released on DVD.

5 Greatest Quotes For Becoming A Better Guitar Musician

By Zack Roberts

1) "Don't Just Copy The Licks, Use The Concept." -Roger Mckinley

Again, Roger-Roger would carry a lick, say a Pat Martino phrase, and upon memorising it, amplify it, play them from all possible diatonic step, in whatever position, change the modes, etc. Do you like the way Albert Collins holds and sustains the fifth and accompanies it with a cascading flurry of descending notes? Try learning it, practising it, then re-write it from the flatted third, or the fourth or seventh. This is a good practice. Begin in a position you've never actually played in before, or in the major pentatonic, or applying open strings or associate it to the one starting on the fifth up an octave. Incidentally, Roger also schooled me to "..connect, connect, connect"

2) "Master All The Tempos"-Phineas Newborn, Jr. This piece of advice from the distinguished jazz pianist always stuck with me. I believe this is genuinely a central to dominating music. Let's say my intention is to master playing at rapid tempos. I work for 3 weeks on a tune at 152mm. I'm starting to get it. One night I go to a nightspot and discover some players playing a fast jam. Wow! What tempo is that? I haven't got my metronome with me but the melodic phrase and tempo I can't get out of my head. I get home and discover that the tune is somewhere in the neighborhood of 176mm to 184mm. Well, that's a whole new glob of wax! It calls for a completely new approach. I ain't gonna be able to pull off all those ingenious sixteenth note runs, (maybe a couple of them..) let's see, it's back to the drawing board. And so, I get down to get the hang off that tempo, and the peculiar expressive style of phrasing it would require to sound genuinely good.- Or, I have gotten pretty adept at a "quick" slow blues at 63mm. But I hear somebody just kill at a super slow 40mm. It's a completely new world! I've got my work cut out for me. This tip truly keeps one expanding and developing, and out of those same old ruts! Master time and you can rule the world!

3) "Free Your Right Hand"

I didn't make this one up, I just never heard it said. It's like a well-kept mystery that I had to discover the challenging way. I'm astounded when, as a instructor, a new student will tell me that his previous teacher had told him to always anchor his right hand. On a superficial level this creates a safe way to find the proper strings easily. I force the student to play with the right hand free and begin alternating the pick direction cooccurring with the down or upbeat. This is commonly met with opposition and creates confusion. I even had a student after one lesson go to a gig and as he tried this advice out on the stage, he wound up cussing me and of course went back to anchoring his right hand after the first set. I personally enjoy this method because you begin to genuinely use the guitar percussively, as a drummer would play the drums. The term "attack" gains a whole new meaning. As one masters the free right hand, one compensates for string noise by muffling unpicked strings with the left hand, or just by learning to be deadly precise. Combined or alternating lead and rhythm, can be brought up to a completely raw art form, not to mention while sustaining a note, one can reach for a beer, cigarette, or hand signal the girl in the 3rd row. (All habits I have given up, by the way.) Pete Townsend at one time said "Don't allow your technique get in the way of your stage show." How else to do those "windmills", simply with a free right hand?

4) "Emotion, First" -my acting coach, Joe Palese

When I was studying acting, many of us would arrive at the beginners mistake of memorising our lines first then tacking on the emotion after the fact. This makes for bad acting! We were adjusted and trained to try the much more dangerous (and messy!) approach of creating genuine and honest emotion in the context of the character reference and the scene we were playing, and then learn the lines in an wholesome fashion, always connecting to the emotion. This made for acting that was genuinely motivating. It is the equivalent for playing guitar and improvisation. How many times have we practiced a lick again and again, pull it off flawlessly at a gig or public setting, and have the feel that folks are not that impressed? Or, do the reverse- you are watching someone else, and although you are impressed, something is lacking and you're not sure what? This goes perfectly with the "Free Your Right Hand" tip. This is where we go first, or at any rate in the process, arrive at a priority. This is where we develop feel, color, audio, nuance, individual articulation like characters, speed that really backpacks a wallop, melody, domination of phrasing that comes in the circumstance of emotional communication. This also involves intimacy, and true self-expression, exposing ones self. Giving all that one has, as contrary to the ego trip or impressing others. This is the stock in trade of the true artist. Clapton, Wes Montgomery, Duane Allman, Bill Evans, and Miles Davis come to mind.

5) "If You Want To Be a Better Musician, Become a Better Person."-John Coltrane

O.K., so what does that mean? Perhaps it entails tell the truth, be real and authentic. Be happy..contribute to other people and the worldbe faithful yourself, be genuine to your ideals and valuesbe caring, be loving. Be a leader and learn to communicate effectively. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Be a teacher. Do things as they should be done. Do all of the work. Do what you said you would. Be gracious. Make and nurture human relationships. Forgive. Make the world a better place. It really is a good deal easier than being a dork. It gives you power.

Photoshop Basics -

By David Peters

My nephew made the leap and finally bought Photoshop. He had been saving up for a while now, and believed it would make his life a lot easier. He saw a future where he would make top quality images by merely thinking about it. Just close your eyes hard enough and 'poof', it was done. Then he sat down to use Photoshop, and realised he had no idea what to do!

You won't have to go through this pain if you spend some time learning about Photoshop. The software is pricy and for good reason- it's the best image editing software on the market today. For someone who is knows what he or she is doing, Photoshop can do anything.

The color algorithm that the program uses is decided by the color picker. Most user selct Adobe or Windows. The algorithm for resizing an image is choosen by the 'Image Interpolation'. Again, most people will use the 'Bicubic Interpolation'.

Next you will notice the "History Log". This allows you to save all the steps you used in the creation of an image. Here you have some choices ... you can either record the start time and date of every editing session with the "Sessions Only" selection. The "Concise" selection records details on every editing session on the file. The other option is the "Detailed", which records the same information as in the 'Concise' selection ... plus information such as the path of the file and an account of every edit made to the file.

These brief examples can point you in the right direction, but the best way to learn about Photoshop is to experiment and try things out for yourself. Play around with all Photoshop's features and discover great new ways to alter your image. To learn in more detail you can read about Photoshop or take an online video tutorial which will show you the step-by-step process for achieving a specific effect. If you keep at it, you'll be making those top quality pictures in no time!

Resizing Images While Keeping Resolution

By David Peters

When you make an image smaller you may interfere with the resolution making the final image take on a blurry appearance. With large, clear images this can be devastating to the effect of the image.

This is a fairly common issue when resizing images, but with Photoshop there's a solution.

You must have at least Photoshop CS to perform this function. The CS series is the most advanced software for editing images so you should get a copy. It is used by media professionals all over the world because of its unrivalled capabilities.

To make an image smaller go to Image> Image Size> Resample Image. Choose Bicubic Sharper from the resulting menu. This setting will minimize any blur that occurs when resizing the image.

When you want to increase the size of an image, but want to minimize the resolution loss choose Bicubic Smoother.

This tool is so useful for resizing that you may want to select it as the default so that it is automatically selected when you start your Adobe Photoshop up. To do this go to Preferences> General where you can select Image Interpolation. Here you just choose Bicubic Sharper from among the selection and it should be set as your new default.

Repeating the resizing process too many times will increase the resolution loss giving a blurry appearance. To avoid this only resize the image once. If you want try out different sizes, use a copy of the original image and when you find the right measurements, simply apply them to the original image once you're done.

Introduction to Adobe Photoshop

By David Peters

Today is an exciting time for photography. The advances in digital technology have made it easy and accessible for anyone wanting to achieve professional photography editing effects to do so from the comfort of their own home. The internet has provided us with an infinite amount of programs to improve the images we capture, but none can aspire to the status of Adobe Photoshop. The program is so recognised as the editing program of choice for the professional and amateur alike that the phrase 'to Photoshop' is in common use meaning to alter images.

It is possible to 'Photoshop' images to give fantasy the illusion of reality. You can alter images so that figures and objects appear in the image that could never be seen together. Whether it's a party with past presidents, Frankenstein and the Easter Bunny, or a picture of you and a celebrity you've never met, you can make anything appear completely realistic.

One thing that Photoshop is closely associated with is isolating aspects of the image you don't want and removing them. This can be used to improve physical features, such as smoothing out damaged skin or covering up body piercings, and can even be used to remove whole objects from the image that detract from the photograph like a distracting person in the background. With Photoshop it is unlikely that you will be able to tell that any alteration has been done to the picture, as the software is so complex.

Photoshop is the software of choice for anyone serious about editing photography. It is popular for a reason, and due to its reputation you may feel like you should familiarise yourself with it. There are many resources to help you learn how to use Photoshop, and if you still feel lost, you can always ask a college or high school student to help you out. Learning Photoshop is useful for so many different applications that it makes sense to invest your time in learning about it.

They story of Photoshop goes back to 1989 when two brothers developed a software for editing images. The program was extremely useful for their personal projects, and it dawned on them that they could make money by selling this product to the growing software market. They soon founded Adobe and began production of Photoshop in 1990.

Adobe's achievement is difficult to put in perspective. This small company has designed programs that are on almost every computer in the world. The Adobe Reader, a free PDF reader, is used by everyone to read PDFs due to its simplicity and reliability. The PDF format is just another example of how Adobe has taken over a format, creating software related to it that becomes the world-wide standard.

To gain experience with Photoshop you should find a copy you can experiment with. Perhaps a friend or relative has one. Go over and explore the program, browsing all the features and adding effects to images. Once you get a feel for how the software operates, ask your friend to show you the more advanced features. Then you'll see why Photoshop has its first-rate reputation. Within no time, you will be addicted to Photoshop.

Downloading a copy for your own use will make it easier to practise using Photoshop. You can get a free trial version, but it will have limited features. The best thing to do is to buy a full version from Adobe as then you don't have to worry anymore and can concentrate on learning how to use the product. Photoshop is used so much, that it makes sense buying a copy. Once you own a copy, you may find that you spend hours experimenting and exploring the features. While this is a great way to get used to the features, specific learning in a Photoshop class can improve your learning curve and make you understand Photoshop faster.

When you master the software, there is no limit to what you can do. Just imagine any concept and you will be able to translate it into an image in no time. Keep experimenting, and remember to have fun!

Learn Blues Guitar Basic Fingerstyle

By Zack R.

There are many different types of guitar fingerstyles for rock and different for blues and this technique can be best learnt on an acoustic guitar. Mastering diverse fingerstyles will assist you to effectively render blues music and backing tracks.

When you are playing your guitar, the technique by which you strum the strings or pick your guitar strings without using a pick is called a fingerstyle. Blues Fingerstyle has been in use for quite a long time in jazz, blues, rock and is even used for improvisation over blues backing tracks. There are some greats of the world of blues music like Mark Knoprfler, Jeff Beck and Chat Atkins who do it very well. Some of the blues guitar players who do the fingerstyle better than anyone else include John Lee Hooker, Albert Collins, Otis Rush and Albert King among others. Learning the fingerstyle method of blues playing will definitely make things easier for you especially when you are jamming and playing over blues guitar backing tracks.

In a nutshell, this technique is all about how well you are able to use your bare fingers. You can use blues fingerstyle on both the acoustic blues and electric blues but they should have nylon or steel strings. Using the fingerstyle gives blues players a definite edge. Most of the blues guitarists of the Delta style used extensive blues backing tracks reinforced by fingerstyles.

You may have heard the word fingerpicking more than finger style and mind you - both the words sound similar but mean different. Fingerpicking in blues is more centered on particular picking patterns that have been inferred from certain chords and are always played in a style quite similar to arpeggio. For illustration: The song Layla by Eric Clapton is fingerstyle but the song Never goin back again by Fleetwood Mac is fingerpicking.

Different Blues Fingerstyles

There are different kinds of blues fingerstyle techniques that you can acquire as you advance up the ladder and of course if you want to play great blues music with backing tracks. The most common way to use fingerstyle in blues backing tracks is by using the classical guitar style. In the classical guitar style, you've to use your thumb for playing the 3 bass strings, and use the index, and middle finger for playing the melody strings.

There are three distinctive style of blues fingerstyle guitar and each have a different effect in blues backing tracks. They are:

1.Using the thumb: The thumb fingerstyle mostly requires down-strokes. It will provide you with a hard style, hard sound, and a great tone but you will not be able to play fast. This is considered a beginners style and will provide you with a feeling of the guitar and the strings and create the base for blues backing tracks.

2.Index finger and thumb: In this technique you need to simulate playing with a pick except you will be using your fingers instead of the pick. The thumb will help in down-strokes while the index finger will be used for up-strokes.

The thumb, index and middle finger: In this technique you will have a definite advantage over the other two techniques and can play blues backing tracks with ease and speed. The middle finger and the index finger will be used for alternate picking.

Online Art Gallery - Lifeline Of An Aspiring Artist

By Kathy Austin

Long before the advent of the Internet, Art Galleries were the haunts of the rich and the famous and it was populated by paintings and sculptures of famous artists and sculptors. Art is very much a personal choice. A picture that one might find to be extremely artistic might not appeal to another. This is more so in the case of Abstract Art. The meaning attributed to a painting by an artist may be quite in variance to what is felt by the viewer of the same.

Art Galleries were patronized by the rich and the famous for only they could afford the wares of these galleries. "Terra Firma" Art galleries were and are practically the exclusive place for the exhibition of the paintings and the sculptures of famous artists and sculptors. Only under extremely extraneous circumstances could an aspiring manage to get his foot in.

The advent of the computer and the development of highly sophisticated software changed the whole face of art and the way it was exhibited and sold. The concept of the "Online Art Gallery" was the reason for the sea change. No longer did the new artist have to tote his wares from some petty gallery to another, practically begging for a display. When he did get to do so and if Dame Luck smiled down on him and he did make a sale; the chances of his setting the price on his work was remote. Most budding artist led a hand to mouth existence.

The Online Art Gallery set about making changes in the fortunes of these artists. These galleries could feature just about any aspect of the fine arts. All an upcoming artist had to do was to create a portfolio of his works and upload the same to one of these galleries. Even the traditional galleries now put up information on their paintings, sculpting and other works on online art galleries. Paintings of old masters, paintings of aspiring artists, sculpting, digital art, photographs and videos - all of them can be displayed in an online art gallery.

1. Space is no longer a restriction. There is unlimited space. The artist can keep on adding to the collection already on display. Physical space restricts the number of articles that can be displayed at a time. 2. There is virtually no time limit for an artist to keep a work or works on display. It is absent if he own the gallery. 3. What can be displayed and what cannot be displayed on an online gallery is limited only by one's imagination. What cannot be displayed is virtually non-existent. Ranging from contemporary art to the now evolving digital art every form of art can be shown without restriction. 4. He or she can set the price of the article on display and increase or reduce it depending on the popularity or not of a particular style of art.

Another option would be to join one of the many Online Art Galleries. There are a number of online sites; some offer their services free of charge but with limited options like keeping a work of art for only a limited period of time on the particular site. Others offer premium services for a fee, the quantum of the fee depending on the range of services offered and those accepted. The fee charged might be as low as a few dollars to a few hundred dollars. The beauty of this is that the artist need not be well known, have a patron or be a genius. And anyone can see it.

An Online Art Gallery permits the addition and deletion of paintings, a statement from the artist, details of the artist and his other works and contact details. Some of these galleries even handle the sale of an artist's painting and take a commission on the proceeds of the deal.

An online art gallery is thus a boon to an aspiring artist. He gets the required exposure, in fact world wide exposure, and the opportunity to sell them online. All he has to do is paint the next Mona Lisa.

Easy Approach To Playing Difficult Guitar Chords

By Zack Roberts

Many of the 7 chords and their extensions, 9,11,13 etc are seemingly very difficult to create with your fret hand. However, there are a few tricks that can help you create these beautiful chords without growing two more fingers.

Most jazz musicians use what are commonly referred to as "small chords" when playing. Jazz players do a lot of what is known as comping, the mixture of rhythm and bass runs; playing that requires quick changing of chords. Thus, playing the full voicing of chords is not always possible and actually, isnt always required.

We can get the essence of most chords with only four notes, as little as three if one is playing with a bass player. Before we look at the chord shapes, lets discuss playing technique.

When playing jazz rhythms, I do not use a pick. I use my thumb and four fingers on my pick hand instead. I can use them in unison when I want to play chords or I can use them separately when finger picking and playing a bass rhythm separately from the chords; comping. There are those players that can hold the pick between their thumb and index finger and use the remaining three fingers to play other notes.

The reason I bring this up will become apparent when we look at the chord voicings. The basis behind this technique is not playing all of the strings. Most of these voicings will require you to skip strings in the middle of the chord. Whatever method you develop to deal with this is up to you. Playing with just my fingers works wonderful for me. If you would like to develop the pick and finger technique, check out information on Bluegrass playing and flatpicking. You dont have to be interested in the genre of music, but the technique is well used in that musical style.

First we will look at the small style of the 7 chord shapes then move on to 6,9,11 and 13 chords. The nice thing about these chords is that they are movable up and down the neck. Thus, changing from a G7 to and A7 is just a matter of moving up two frets, much like barre chords. There really isnt too much more to talk about with these chord shapes. So, Ill just show you the shapes and you play them. Work with combining these shapes in progressions. If you have music around that you have been staying away from because these chords were too intimidating, pull out the music and start playing! I will show the shapes in either G or C dependant on the root string. Again, remember that these shapes are movable so just look at the bass note to get your chord name. Ill talk about different fingerings as we move through the lesson. However, I will offer fingerings in a traditional style and they will be shown as follows. First, the chord chart will indicate

G7 - Barre E,D and B strings with Index and fret G string with Ring.

Gmin7 - Barre E,D,G and B with Index.

First, the G7 and Gmin7. You can see how easily one could change from one to the other. Also, notice how the A string and the high E are not played, this is what I was mentioning above.

G7sus4 - Barre E,D and B with Index and fret G string with Ring.

GMaj7 - Barre E and B with Index, fret D with Middle and fret G with Ring.

The G7sus4 and the GMaj7. Again, only four notes per chord and easily movable.

Gmin/Maj7 - Barre E,G and B with Index and fret D with Ring.

G7b5 - E-Middle, D-Ring, G-Pinky and B-Index

Now were really getting into some jazzy chords. The G7b5 chord fingering can be tricky. I play in a style that is known as "thumbing the bass." Many guitarists have used this technique, Grant Green, Richie Havens and even Jimi Hendrix. However, the technique is stilled frowned upon by classically trained guitarists. The technique simply involves wrapping your thumb around the neck of the guitar enabling you to use your thumb to fret the bass notes. I can do this with bass notes on the E A and even D string when necessary. I have become very effective with the technique and my rhythm playing is respected in the circles in which I play. You can, however, simply fret the chords as barre chords or as four finger chords, as one would have to do with the G7b5. Work on different positions and find something that is comfortable and effective for you.

Gmin7b5 - E-Middle ,D-Ring ,G-Pinky and B-Index

GAug7 - Barre E and A with Index and barre G and B with Ring.

Again, were getting into some really jazzy sounding chords here. Try the different fingerings. The min7b5 will probably have to be played as a thumb bass or a four finger chord. The Aug7 could be played like a barre.

Gdim7 - E-Middle, D and B-Barre w/ Index and G-Ring

GMaj6 - E-Middle, D-Index, G-Pinky and B-Ring

Getting a little tricky here when it comes to fingering these chords. Also, we see our first new category, the Maj6 chord. This is where my technique of thumbing the bass really comes in handy (pun certainly intended)

Gmin6 - E-Middle, D-Index, G-Ring and B-Pinky

G13 - Barre E and D with Index, G-Middle and B-Ring

Okay, here are still more jazzy chords. The 13 chord is one of my favorites. This particular voicing of the 13 has the root, the b7, the 13 and the 3rd, just enough to make the chord sound like it should. The 5th can be added if desired, Ive indicated the 5th with *. Now, lets move on to some chords with roots on the A string.

C9 - A-Middle, D-Index, G-Ring and B-Pinky

Cb9 - Barre D and B with index, A-Middle, G-Ring

Okay, these 9 chords are fantastic for jazz and fusion. I find these have a great sound with some distortion or clean. One thing to point out, the Cb9 can be confusing. This is a C9 with a flat 9, not a Cb with a 9. As you know, Cb=B and is very rarely used. But, if this were shown as a Db9, then it could be confusing. Two ways composers will help with this. If it is shown as a Db9, you may assume it is a D9 with a flat 9. If the chord intended is a Db/C# 9, the composer will most likely call it a C#9 to avoid confusion. Also, if the chord intended is a Db9 with a flat 9, you will see either C#b9 or you may see Dbb9. You will come across these voicings once in a while and they can be confusing as you can see. Take the chords in context and the correct chord is usually quite apparent.

Cmin9 - A-Middle, D-Index, G-Ring and B-Pinky

CMaj9 - A-Middle, D-Index, G-Pinky and B-Ring

Okay, I think that is enough for now. We have 16 chords above that can be played with all 12 different roots, Thats 192 chords! Have fun with these

For Guitar Players : 5 Of The Best Tips of All Time

By Zack Roberts

Here are the 5 greatest tips of all times made by famous people and how they can apply to guitar playing. I've heard and read these tips over the years and they have earned their weight in gold :

1) "What You Think, You Become." -Ghandi

I came across this quote in the book entitled "Fearless Creating", which is written by Eric Maisel . It emphasized the possibleness that the things we try to make all begin in our ideas, and imagination. I cast this quote on my wall, my notepad, my hand, everywhere for a number of years to remind myself to keep my purpose present in my mind, and it always assisted me to not give a whole lot of attention to uninvited negative thoughts and my automatic ones, such as..SEX!

2) "There is Always a Way" -Vinnie Colaiuta

I've read this in an interview with Vinnie in a friend's magazine some years back relating to drums. The entire gist of the article was that when he was faced with a abstract problem, or when he was trying to pick up something especially challenging, or new, he was of the mind that there was "always a way" to get it, be it an adjustment of posture, a new way of looking at the execution of it, a new way of playing the blues guitar instrument, something to change to accomplish what was previously believed to be "impossible". I always try to use this when moving up the food chain, trying to get to the succeeding level. It has resulted in some great results, if not necessarily technical prowess, certainly something creative and unique.

3) "Poor Artists Borrow, Great Artists Steal" -Picasso or Stravinsky

I have overheard that it was either one of these extraordinary artists who said this. Also a corrolary"To be a really good guitarist, you must copy the styles of other blues guitarists."-Frank Gambale.

Well, first what can we steal? Chord progressions, tempo, groove, melodic phrase, (backwards melody!) Expressive style, mental attitude. What is the difference between that and "borrowing"? I think the great artist turns his thievery into something entirely his own, perhaps by unabashedly admitting the theft and developing it into a whole new foundation. Think -The Beatles, Prince, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimmie Page, Clapton, Ornette Coleman, Elvis. Whereas the "borrower" is feigning to us that his original work has never before been heard and they have a contrived quality. This can be a very fine line.

Prior to ever reading the interview with Frank Gambale, saying that imitating styles was a invaluable tool, I was intrusted to some obscure concept of "being original". When I acquired the accuracy of that affirmation, I set about to work, and it has changed my life. I embraced the point of view that I was a student, and had a great deal to learn from those who preceded me, that music and its history was outside of myself, and was greater than I was. I am now a firm believer that both of these aspects expand one's growth to an immense degree. They give the player completely fresh languages to speak, and once you speak new languages, you will be able to create your personal great stories. Stories with depth and richness.

4) "The Impossible Can Be Accomplished Through Meditation and Concentration" -The Cup and Saucer Guy

I recall being kind of trapped on a plateau with my blues guitar playing at one point. I had achieved a good deal, but I didn't know how to really move ahead. I was watching a variety tv show on television one night. A man came on balancing one hundred cups and saucers. He did this for what appeared to be a very long time and then he allow them to all crash around him. As the audience applauded his effort, the host asked him how he had learned to do this. His answer was that through meditation, he was able to achieve the necessary concentration. I began my own meditation methods, first applying a easy technique of being still, which I had discovered in the pieces of writing of people like J. Krishnamurti, and Tara Singh. Nothing which requires years to master, but a simple way of continuing to quiet the mind, increasing concentration, focus, and listening, just being in a very calm and relaxed state, paying attention. I now carry this stillness and relaxation to all my guitar performances.

5) "The Three Month Rule" -Roger Mckinley

Roger Mckinley was a associate student at Berklee. Roger was also a very gifted rock and blues guitarist, who, when I first came across him, was imitating Pat Martino. Just 2 years later, had created his own explosive unique style. ( see tip#3!) He left the jaws of many around him agape (and he never seemed to be committing any effort into it!) I was surprised that he befriended lil' ol' me and was willing to jam with me. I understood and leanr so much from him on just a single jam session. One of the things he told me is that it takes a good 8 weeks to bring an element of originality into your playing. This has saved me a good deal of frustration, and tempered my natural impatience. I have come to a conclusion that no matter how much I practise something, it is usually the better part of 8 weeks before I actually can master it.

I hope you can use these practical and inspiration quote to bring your music and guitar playing to greater heights.

Pictures On The Wall?

By Kurt Schefken

Home decorating consists of putting up drywall, redecorating, painting, hanging wallpaper or putting in new flooring. One part of home decorating that we tend to overlook is hanging a picture. This may seem like a very simple project, but if it's not done correctly, you can have problems. Before you begin hanging a picture, you need to consider the weight of the picture and the type of wall you will be hanging it on.

You'll need to purchase the correct fasteners to hang your picture on the wall. These fasteners may be nails, hooks or new adhesive stickers that are now becoming widely used. While these are the most common fasteners, they may not be appropriate on all wall types. If the wall in question is made of brick, stucco or concrete, you won't want to use a regular nail. You'll need to use a concrete screw to ensure that the picture is hung securely and you haven't damaged the wall. Using a nail may only result in chipping the concrete by the nail.

If the picture of object is heavy, you can use a plastic anchor or a molly bolt. Either of these will work great and will not damage your wall. The local hardware or home improvement store will give you free tips on what kind of fasteners will work best for your picture or object to be hung.

Next on your list is deciding where to put the picture. In many parts of the country, people choose to place pictures purely on open walls, and not next to doors or curtains. How high or how low is usually a debatable question. The rule of thumb is to hang the picture so it is at eye level. Take a tape measure and measure from the floor to where eye level is on the wall. This is where the center of the picture will be hung. The next step will be to measure the actual picture. Measure from the bottom of the picture to the highest part of the hanging wire. To determine where you will hang it, subtract half of the picture's height and adding this to where you determined eye level was. You can then make a mark on the wall where it will be. Next, you need to make sure the picture is centered vertically and horizontally, making sure there is a stud behind the drywall.

Hold the fastener in place and nail or screw the fastener in the wall. When the nail or screw is securely in the wall, gently hang the picture. You want to hang it gently in case you missed the stud. If you did miss the stud the weight of the picture may put pressure on the nail if you're nailing into drywall. If you find that the picture is not quite as high or low as you want, first try adjusting the hanging wire. This is much easier than putting another hole in your wall.

If you have to hang more than one picture on the wall, you'll need to figure and measure for each picture. Measure for the first, then hang it, then measure for the second and so forth.

Jimi Hendrix- The Guitar Legend Revisited

By Zack R.

Who'd have thought that a self-taught musician who, as a boy, desired a guitar so desperately he completely built one out of a broom before acquiring a pathetic one-stringed ukulele, would eventually be acclaimed by many as one of the greatest and most influential guitarists in rock and blues music history?

Jimi Hendrix was born in 1942 and served in the US military army as a paratrooper in his early days.Having taught himself the guitar, he played the US' 'Chitlin Circuit' of clubs before heading over to New York, garnering a spot as the new guitarist for The Isley Brothers' band before joining Little Richard's back-up band and others.

On moving to London in 1966, he formed a 3 man band - The Jimi Hendrix Experience - which acquired rapid fame in Europe. Jimi became recognised for entertaining showmanship, which occasionally included setting his guitar ablaze! With a landmark show at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, and huge success of record album 'Are You Experienced?' Jimi became a world-wide star.

Hendrix was the headline artist at the 1969 Woodstock Festival, where he played his controversial war-like fuzz-guitar version of 'The Star-Spangled Banner'. Jimi Hendrix died at the age of 27 in 1970, having recorded only three fully-conceived studio albums and more than 300 unreleased recordings.

With his unique style of playing guitars upside down ('left-handed') and restrung to suit him, Hendrix is credited with taking the electric guitar to a higher level. Hendrix aimed to mix what he called 'earth', a blues, jazz, or funk driven rhythm accompaniment, with 'space', the high-pitched psychedelic sounds he improvised on his guitar.

Hendrix played a central role in establishing the Fender Stratocaster as the highest-selling electric guitar in history and making popular the use of extreme guitar distortion using effects pedals, including the wah-wah pedal, and other pedal units. He pioneered in the recording studio, experimenting with stereophonic and phasing effects.

With his albums amongst the most influential of the 1960s, James Marshall Hendrix altered rock and roll as the world knew it.

The Story of Eric Clapton, The Legendary Blues Guitarist

By Zack R.

On this thirteenth birthday, an English boy - an illegitimate son of a soldier - picked up his first acoustic guitar from his grandparents.

Despite his love for blues music, he found learning to play so challenging he almost gave up. He practised for many long hours, hanging on to learn chords and trying to imitate and mimic the sounds and tone of his blues guitar idols like Big Bill Broonzy by listening to them on his tape machine.

Soon after finding that the study of stained glass design at England's Kingston College of Art wasn't right for him, he busked around Kingston, Richmond and London's West End before bringing together his first band at age 17 - the Roosters - an R&B outfit, in 1963. Fromthat point onwards, Eric Clapton went on to a sensational musical career as an incredibly talented guitar player, singer and songwriter.

His versatility is remarkable, with hits in genres from Delta blues ('Me & Mr Johnson'), pop ('Change the world') and reggae ('I shot the sheriff'). Nicknamed 'Slowhand' for his string-bending blues licks and riffs, Eric Clapton is known as one of the most successful musicians of the 20th century. Do you know that Eric was 'christened' Slowhand by the manager of The Yardbirds because when he broke a string [only had 1 telecaster] he took his time replacing it on stage ...and let everone wait...including the audience.

With his love of the instrument demonstrated in his amazing collection of about 750 guitars, Eric Clapton is hailed as one of the greatest blues guitarists of all time. How is your musical journey progressing?

Easy Blues Guitar Scales for Blues Musicians

By Zack R.

Come and join us as we take a look into what makes up a blues scale, and as we examine in depth the benefits of using blues backing tracks to perfect and hone our knowledge and skill for playing the blues.

One of the most emotional forms of music that is played on the guitar is blues music. Blues guitarists seem to bleed out their emotions through their fingertips, and interweave a soul-bearing story using six strings. Many individuals who fall in love with playing the guitar soon fall in love with blues music, if they weren't already infatuated with it before.

One of the key elements to learning how to play blues music is learning the scales and chords that make up the foundation of what blues music is. There are a lot of different kinds of blues music and different styles within that genre that you can learn, so it's important to just start with the basic simple chords and scales and work your way up to the more complex ones.

The basic blues scale is a pentatonic minor scale, but it has one additional note than the regular pentatonic minor scale. It's this additional note that gives the needed amount of tension to create the signature blues sound. The scale consists of six different note names, but when you actually play the blues scale you will play all the places for those note names within that specific position.

Once you learn that particular scale, you are now ready to master the timing, structure, and improvisational aspects of blues music. This is best accomplished by playing along with blues backing tracks. Practicing along to blues backing tracks is like practicing along with an entire blues band accompanying you. There are a lot of benefits that can come from using blues backing tracks to improve your practice time.

One of the benefits to using blues backing tracks to perfect your skills is it helps you to understand structure and how the scale fits in with the rhythm section. By playing along with blues guitar backing tracks, you'll be able to combine the knowledge you have of the scale and apply what you've learned about music theory.

Another great benefit of blues backing tracks is the fact that it is a powerful weapon in mastering one of the trickiest parts of playing the blues, and that would be improvisation. With these guitar backing tracks you have the freedom to improvise a hot lead solo based on your knowledge of the scale and your own creativity. Improvisation is an important technique, one that is crucial for the blues guitarist to flourish in, especially during a live performance, which these tracks are also good for as well.

The Best Blues Guitar Scales - For Lead Guitar

By Zack R.

Playing best blues guitar scales include the Am Pentatonic scales, natural A minor scales, E minor, G shuffle licks and many others. These scales can help you not only to master the blues scales but also help you to play lead guitar and improvise your own lick and riffs over blues backing tracks.

There are different types of blues scales that can be used for lead guitar playing. You can also use them to make some blues backing tracks so that you can play along with the tracks and learn faster. Blues backing tracks can help you to play solo or lead even when there is no second guitarist present and the best thing is that you can even purchase some of the best blues backing tracks from the Internet from companies such as 50Blues. Let's take a look at some of the most common blues scales used for lead guitar playing and for creating blues backing tracks.

Using Blues Scales

You can start with a natural A-minor scale also known as the A minor scale. Here's how it looks:

A B C D E F G A w w w w w

You can start practicing the natural A-minor scale till the time you are extremely comfortable using it. You can use all the notes that are there in this blues scale for playing the lead guitar with a blues backing track. There are many blues players who use the A-minor pentatonic or the Am pentatonic scale in a mix with the natural A-minor scale.

Once in a while you should try and mix two scales together to bring out a different blues sound. To play the natural A-minor scale, you can tune it to play the Dm7 chord. The Dm7 comprises of D-F-A-C notes. The only chord that is not in the A-minor pentatonic scale is F because A-minor pentatonic comprises of A-C-D-E-G notes.

On the other hand, the natural A-minor scale comprises of A-B-C-D-E-F-G notes. So what you should ideally do is emphasize on the F taken from natural A- minor scale while playing the Dm7 chord. This will bring out a definitive blues scale and sound that can be played as lead with blues backing track.

Some of the best blues scales are just minor pentatonic scales with some added notes. This added note is commonly referred to as the blues note and helps in bringing out the specific blues sound. You can play a basic minor pentatonic scale or the basic blues scale, which will consist of 6 different notes.

When you are playing the lead or creating a blues backing track for a solo then you will need to play all the points for all the 6 notes that are within one position. For example: If you use a C blues scale then you will find that it consists of C E F G G and B notes. Here are the notes that are found in the basic C blues scale:

|--C--|-----|-----|-E--| -1st string |--G--|-----|-----|-B--| |--E-|-----|--F--|-G--| |--B-|-----|--C--|-----| |--F--|-G--|--G--|-----| |--C--|-----|-----|-E--| -6th string | 8th fret

The idea is that there are 6 different notes mentioned above and once you have reached your 6th note, you will need to start back from the C note and go over the process again and again to master the lead.

Avoid Disappointment And Frustration With Good Basic Watercolors!

By Michael Dale

I have to admit that a critic could have been right to say that my simple 2 stage learn how to paint watercolors course was too simple...

The course is too simple for a beginner who expects a painting course to show them how to paint landscapes, still-life pictures, portraits and technical subjects. It is far simpler because it was aimed at artists who wanted to learn how to paint without the pressures of learning to draw.

Here are 2 reasons why you should return to basic watercolor painting techniques...

1. It is a great idea to learn to paint before you try to paint a picture

2. It is a good idea to go back to first principles when your paintings are going wrong

Some people are lucky. They never struggle to learn to paint watercolor. It is easy for some to pick up a paint box and brushes and paint a good watercolor landscape without difficulty. They are a fortunate minority.

Alternatively, most of us aren't blessed with such talents...

* Learning to paint watercolors is hard

* At times it can seem impossible to paint watercolor pictures

It isn't hard to find every brush mark on your painting turns into an awful mess. As you find your watercolor washes flooding uncontrollably, it is easy to create a nightmare of badly blended color.

It doesn't take long for your great art ideas to turn into muddy chaos. And, when things go wrong you are lost. Unless you know what is happening as the watercolor paint sweeps across your sheet of watercolor paper you will never improve...

* You need to see how the color moves where the water carries it

* You need to understand that a wash that isn't fully dry will be wrecked when the next color wash is painted

* It is a great idea to learn how to get a range of different color intensities and tone from a single color before adding another color to the mix

Like the old saying goes... "It is better to learn to walk before you run"

Watercolor painting can quickly convince you that you have no artistic talent. It can make you look like you have no painting skills. It is a shame to become disheartened when your watercolors go wrong.

So, given the choice, which option would you choose?

"Disappointment and frustration... or a deep understanding of how simple and easy watercolors work in your painting?"

Getting Sleeved: Full Sleeve Tattoos How To

By Chris Smith

Thinking about possible getting a full sleeve tattoo or just wondering what the heck they are? Well, full, half and quarter tattoo sleeves are very hot items right now and many people are getting them. This doesn't mean you should just run out and get one because other people are but if you want to know more about full sleeve tattoos then this can help give you some of the basic information. Women don't hold back on this one either as there are more and more women today then ever before sporting full and half sleeve tattoos.

What Is A Sleeve Tattoo? So if you are wondering what I am talking about it is a large arm tattoo. Sleeve just comes from the shirt sleeves that typically cover our arms and a sleeve tattoo is a full tattoo design that frequently covers up the whole arm in the tattoo design. You can get a variety of different lengths which will mean different amounts of the arms will be covered. For example a half sleeve tattoo is typically from the should down to the elbow or forearm area. A full sleeve then is all the way down to the wrist with the tattoo design.

While there are many ways to go about getting a sleeve tattoo most people typically fall into one of two categories. First they might have started by getting individual tattoos on their arms and then later connect all of these together with some larger tattoo design. The second way is to get one large tattoo that covers the whole area. The style or type you chose will depend on the existing tattoos you already have in the area and what your goals are.

The Individual Tattoos Path: This is the path where an individual gets a bunch of individual tattoos over time. These are all tattoos on their arm but most often in a variety of places. For example one might get a big dragon on their shoulder in one sitting and then a few months or year later get some flames going up their forearm. Eventually the individual decides why not connect all for the individual tattoos into one design and they go about connecting them for a unified full sleeve tattoo.

The Complete Project Method: The complete project method is pretty much what the title says. This is done when a person decides before getting any other tattoos that they want a full arm or a full sleeve tattoo design. They want to get the whole thing done in one shot. They will typically then decide on the design that they want done and work with a tattoo artist to get a custom tattoo design drawn for them. The tattoo will take several sessions at the tattoo shop to get the whole thing done but the design was done as one piece. This lends itself to large designs and typically bigger art work as opposed to a lot of small tattoos connected together like int he other way.

Sleeve Tattoo Inspiration Ideas and Designs: Once you have chosen the method for getting your tattoo done then it is time to think about what design and tattoo you want for your full sleeve. This can be a hard and sometimes frustrating process. However, if you learn to enjoy the journey along the way the process will flow much more smoothly. Take your time in getting a full sleeve tattoo since this is a big commitment and something that you will live with for the rest of your life. Therefore you don't want to rush into anything. Instead take some time and think about what tattoo designs inspire you and what themes speak to you. Look at a lot of other pictures, flash and tattoo designs other people have done for their full sleeves. You don't want to just flat out copy but rather gather ideas and resources from other people's inspiration and then see if their is a unifying theme that you can use in your tattoo. Speak with a professional tattoo artist about doing a custom design and let him know the things you like and don't like and see what he or she can come up with.

What Is Hot: One place to get started with finding a design is to think about what you have seen and what is popular in sleeve tattoo designs already. Below are some guidelines of more popular themes for sleeve tattoos. However, these are just meant to spark an interest and should not just be used because they are popular. You want your body art to express something about you so just use the ideas as inspiration.

Sleeve Tattoo Ideas: Flames - One popular design theme that you can find on a good number of full sleeve tattoos are flames. These typically start down at the wrist and the flames burn upwards towards the shoulder. This look great and can easily be incorporated with other designs or tattoos.

Sleeve Tattoo Designs: Tribal - Tribal sleeve designs are another great tattoo design that can commonly be done as a sleeve. Tribal tattoos are typically made up of large bold lines done in black and they look great from a distances and really stand out. Therefore they make great sleeve tattoos designs. Don't feel you have to go with the standard tribal designs either as there are many different native cultures that used tattooing. You can go with something really unique like a Maori tribal design.

Tattoo Sleeve Ideas: Celtic - Another way to go and one that is very popular is to integrated a Celtic tattoo design into the sleeve. Just think about Anthony Kiedis from the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. He has a pair of wonderful Celtic forearm tattoos that could easily be extended into a full sleeve. There are step patterns, spirals, human and animal along with the classic knot work designs. These again make use of bold black lines of ink which can be intricate and bold at the same time.

Sleeve Tattoo Designs: Florals - Another option to go for is a floral pattern. This can work for men as well as women but more typically women choose to get floral designs. The combination of flowers and vines can often be interwoven into an almost tribal or even Celtic look for a really amazing sleeve tattoo. These look great when they start down at the wrist and then grow up towards the shoulder.

The Time and Cost Factor: You should consider carefully the costs and time commitment involved in getting a full or even half sleeve tattoo. They can be rather costly and time consuming and so you want to plan ahead and ensure that you can complete the project before you get started designing it. Typically it can take 25 hours of time to complete just the tattoo part of the work and this number can go up drastically depending on the design and the shop. As far as cost it can be hard to project again it depends on the shop. the experience of the tattoo artist and the amount of work they currently have. Of course when they are super busy they are good but you will have to pay more. Very rough guidelines in terms of price would be anywhere from $1,000 to $2,000 dollars.

If after reading all of the above you are still excited to get a full or half sleeve tattoo then by all means go for it. They can make a wonderfully bold statement and a wonderful piece of body art. Just make sure you spend some time before getting started researching the design and the artist you want to work with. These are the two most crucial elements to getting a wonderful sleeve tattoo.

Discipline In Blues Guitar Practicing

By Zack R.

Any professional blues guitarist will tell you: Discipline is very important when it comes to practicing the guitar. Learning to play the guitar is one of the most rewarding things I have ever done in my life but it was also one of the hardest. The reason that I became good with my instrument is simple. I practiced! Not only did I practice, I practiced a lot; every day in my bedroom.

I spent nearly all of my time practicing the fundamentals initially. Affairs like running up and down scales, switching between chords and trying to improve my repertoire of songs. Occasionally it was easy to make time to practise because I was in a good mood and I genuinely wanted to play. At those times I could spend hours just listening to how cool it sounded when I shifted from the chord D to the chord G.

But on other days, when my mood wasn't so good, it was my discipline and desire to play and improve that made me practise and develop as a blues guitar player. There are two main factors when it comes to discipline in practice. They are practicing regularly, and practicing well. Both of these are important points.

Practicing regularly is the most obvious and easy thing to do. Basically, you should play the guitar every day. These don't need to be mammoth, three hour long sessions, 30 minutes will generally be fine if you are focused during that time. Doing regular, small amounts of practice throughout the week is far better than doing one or two long sessions.

I know that in a busy life it can be hard to make the time to practise but to be honest, 30 minutes a day is accomplishable for anyone. There is no set time that is best for practice but I choose to do it in the evening simply because I find that playing the guitar is a great and relaxing way to wind down after a hectic and long day.

Having said that, practicing well is a much harder thing to do and there are many reasons why this is the case. Bad practice habits affects even the most experienced players but it can be overcome with some help. Develop proper techniques and keep focusing on have good fundamentals.

The Subtle Influence of Blues In Modern Day Music

By Zack R.

Join me as I examine the joys of blues guitar and the major influence it has had on modern day music. Learn how to make your guitar sing out what you're feeling. Learn how to play with blues rhythm and try out some new chords and strumming patterns.

Playing from the inside out.

Blues guitar music is one of the most intriguing and fascinating music genre that is out there. It features a colourful history, interesting people and a way of expressing feelings unlike any other style of music. In essence, blues tells a story of one's life experiences and has diverse themes ranging from travel to modern day events.

Blues isn't as decorated as other genres of music. It is raw and uncensored and as far as the guitar is concerned, one of the finest venues to let your creativity soar. You will not be criticised for your technique here, instead, you will be complimented for your ingenuity. Within the realm of blues guitar, there are many different sub-specialties. There is delta blues and many more

Many guitarists fail to realize is that legendary players such as Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughn were all blues players. Many of their songs were inspired by blues and created a whole new generation of pumped up guitarists. Unfortunately, many people fail to make that connection and blues is often underestimated by aspiring guitarists. The reality is that blues is only what you make it.

While I respect and understand those who decide not to play blues, I have little tolerance for ignorance. You have heard it said over and over again that blues has always been the cornerstone for many of your favourite styles that you love today. Blues lead guitar playing uses a multifaceted approach that is established upon smooth bends, hammer on's, pull off's and many other standard techniques. The way they are ultimately played and delivered is what sets blues apart. First off, blues rarely, if ever, follows a single one set rule.

However, there are numerous approach patterns that have made blues famous. You can branch out from these patterns into your own unique style. Ultimately, you can make anything sound bluesy with some simple scales. There are various kinds of blues scales. Many are derived from the pentatonic scale. However, a true blues scale has what is called a blue note. A blues note means a drop in pitch located on the 3rd, 5th, or 7th tone of the scale. If this flatted note isn't included in the key signature, an accidental will be used to tell you to play that note as a flat.

That scratches the tip of blues scales and there are many other variations. I encourage you to go to your local store to buy a scale book to hone your skills and see the other blues scales available. I will also encourage you to purchase professional blues guitar backing tracks to take your blues playing to the next level.

BB King The Blues Legend Played On Street Corners

By Zack R.

In his youth he played on street corners for dimes and pennies! He was born on 16 September, 1925 on a plantation in Itta Bena, Mississippi, near Indianola. He spent his youth playing on street corners for dimes. Today B.B. King (Riley B. King) averages 250 'packed to the rafters' concerts around the world each and every year.

In 1947, he hitchhiked to Memphis, Tennessee to pursue his music career and it is first love. His first major break came in 1948 when he performed on Sonny Boy Williamson's radio broadcast. As the years well by, King has developed one of the world's most identifiable guitar styles.

He borrowed from Blind Lemon Jefferson, T-Bone Walker and others, incorporating his distinct and complex voice-like string blends and his left-handed vibrato, both of which have become vital components of a blues guitarist's vocabulary. His economy, his every-note-counts phrasing, has been a model for thousands of players from Eric Clapton and George Harrison to Jeff Beck.

In the mid-1950s, two men got into a fight during one of King's performances. The men knocked over a kerosene stove and set fire to the venue. King raced outdoors to safety and then realised he'd left his beloved acoustic guitar behind. He rushed back in to retrieve it and almost lost his life. He found out later that the fight had been over a woman.

He named his guitar Lucille to remind him to never do a crazy thing like fight for a woman. Ever since, each one of King's guitars has been called Lucille. Does your guitar have a name?

Tips on Playing Blues Guitar Chords and Rhythm.

By Zack R

My favorite chords are blues chords. While some of them may be a little more complicated, you can really get a groove going with them

O= Play string.

X= Don't play string.

Most common blues guitar chords l have the same name tag of seven. These are known as dominant seventh chords. They sound great when played together and give you a great deal of possibilities. You can also play a G7 chord by moving your finger from the third fret to the first fret on the high E string. It will expect you to change your fingering. Strumming patterns for blues are usually fast in pace. To do this, we need to keep things simple and rhythmic. Here is a great strumming pattern to learn:

Down Down Up Up Down

Change things up a bit and try alternating the up and down strums. Keep practicing them and you'll be well on your way. You'll find that I used a lot of rest in-between chords. These little pauses can be handled moving your fingers somewhat off the fretboard and discontinue strumming at the same time. You can stop strumming for that short moment and pick right back up again without breaking the pattern.

This will be challenging at first but you will soon grow into it. In musical language, it can be described as a "shuffle" feel.

Soloing Strategies

When playing blues, you may experience a problem where everything you play begins to sound similar. You may find that you continually revert back to what you know. In other words, you're playing in a box. Here are some helpful hints to help you avoid this problem.

First, get yourself some blues guitar backing tracks. You can purchase professional tracks from companies such as 50Blues. Begin by with playing short bursts of music that last for roughly 10 seconds. These short "Bursts" should sound similar to a blues guitar solo. Vary the tempo and the pause time in between these short rests.

Secondly, try key changes. Move into a new key and incorporate the techniques that you are already familiar with. Use dynamics. Going from something soft to something hard really has a great effect and will train your mind to think outside of the box. I also suggest that you learn how to play 16th notes and 32nd notes in rapid succession so you will be as equally equipped to play the fast notes as you are the slow notes.

Focus in on your right hand and insure that you give it a good work out everyday by using alternative picking and rapid picking techniques. I urge you to focus in on that last tip. Stop looking at your left and right hand as two separate entities. Rather, look at them as one. You may notice that when you strum hard with your right hand, your left hand becomes tense even though it's just holding a simple chord.

A problem like that can lead to serious health problems in the future such as carpal tunnel syndrome. To avoid that, practice playing with your left hand relaxed while your right hand strums. This will also increase speed and help you to add texture to your blues solos.

The Art of Nature Photography

By Barry Craft

Before starting nature photography, you need to have the correct lens for your camera in order to take close up pictures. Most cameras do a fine job of taking landscape photography because everything is in focus. However, if you plan on photographing wild animals you may need a zoom lens to shoot from a distance. You will probably not be able to get as close to the animals as you would like without scaring it off.

Macro photography, at the other extreme, is the photographing of small objects usually taken very close up. Examples would be such things as insects, greenery, and small flowers. Some cameras have a built-in setting that allows them to take very good pictures close up. But for the best results, you'll need special lenses for these macro shots. With the right tools, macro photography can be very rewarding.

Macro photography requires more patience, especially when photographing small animals or insects that won't stay still. Just remember, patience and persistence does pay off. The wind can play a role in the quality of your photos when photographing outdoors. This is because of the fact that you're zoomed in so close. Even very small movements will be exaggerated causing your picture to be blurred.

To compensate for this extra movement, you can purchase various accessories for your camera. They will help stabilize the flowers or plants especially in the more windy conditions. They usually clip onto the tripod and then gently hold your subject in position.

To compose a great nature photograph, you must begin by selecting a subject. Do you find beauty in the sun shining through a leaf or do close-ups of insects make you happy?

If you chose plants, you only need to wait for the lighting to be right, which depends on the feel you're looking for. If you chose insects, you must wait to come across one that is fairly cooperative. See our Wildlife Photography article for information on photographing animals.

To compose the best picture, use a tripod or lean on something steady and still. A crooked picture will show a lack of experience and a straight picture will make the photo look more professional. Even if it is on a tripod, make sure the camera is level.

A great tripod will come equipt with a level to make this super easy. If not, use your guidelines and line them up with something stright in your photo. These tips will assist you in leveling your tripod and improve the quality of your photographs. Once this is done, you can begin taking pictures.

Once you have played around with your camera a bit, try to take a nature picture that shows a feeling such as joy or serenity. You might view the bright sun reflecting off of a window as joy. You may see the sun melting on top of the ocean as peaceful and serene.

Try using different lighting to give you photo personality, or capture of the emotion of an outdoor event. If you practice with your camera a lot, you can get great pictures that when you look at them, you think, "Wow! I can't believe that I took that picture!" If you take a really good photo, if you wanted to you could sell it, get a large print of it and hang it on your wall, or put it on a card, mug, pillow, etc. You will be rewarded with the smile from friends and family.

Bambi, Disney's Moving Masterpiece

By Steve Collins

In 1942, Walt Disney released his fifth animated feature, Bambi. It was based on the Austrian story Bambi, A Life In The Woods, by Felix Salten. Published in 1923, the book chronicled the adventures of a male roe deer from birth to maturity. The book was well received both in Europe and the United States. Salten, whose actual name was Siegmund Salzmann, was Hungarian by birth but spent most of his life in Vienna. The popularity of the book prompted Salten to write a sequel entitled Bambi's Children.

The plot of Bambi, the animated movie, follows the adventures the title deer, who is the Prince of the Forest, and his companions Thumper, a rabbit; Flower, a skunk; and Faline, a white-tailed fawn who becomes his mate. While Bambi was initially written as a roe deer, Disney took the liberty to make him a white-tailed deer as roe do not inhabit the United States.

In his trademark effort to capture realistic details, Disney sent his team of animators to lectures at the Los Angeles Zoo and even went so far as to have a pair of fawns shipped in from Baxter State Park in Maine. This allowed the animators to observe, first-hand, the movements of the white-tailed deer. This was a key factor in deciding to make the animated Bambi a white-tailed deer, and not the roe deer of Salten's book. Maurice Day, of one the best known of Disney's animators, was sent to Vermont and Maine to photograph and sketch the eastern forests. His research material was used by Tyrus Wong, a former painter whose Eastern painterly influence added a new dimension of emotion to the lush backgrounds.

Bambi was released by RKO in August of 1942, as World War II was raging. Although it did relatively well at the box office, it was still considered a failure by Disney at it barely covered the costs of production. It was in subsequent re-releases, in 1947, 1957, 1966, 1975, 1982, and 1988 that Bambi actually returned a tremendous profit. Indeed, it has been one of the most popular VHS and DVD movies the studio has ever issued. The Bambi Masterpiece release was the first Disney release to be THX certified.

The film was honored with three Academy Award nominations for Best Sound, Best Song ("Love Is A Song"), and Original Music Score. Fans and critics both hailed the animation, which showed a maturity and solidification of the Disney "style." Disney would not endeavor to make another animated feature until well after the war with Cinderella in 1950.

Digital Audio Consoles - Create a full mix in minutes.

By Steve Collins

The recent screen writers strike made nearly everyone in the country aware of just how important one segment of the entertainment industry can be. It was a field day for reality television, but for everyone else it was a nightmare! The threat of a sound technicians' strike to any aspect of the music, television, or movie industry could be equally harmful. Few people outside the business grasp the importance of a sound person or could begin to fathom the operation of an audio console.

While the advantages of programmable technology and digital consoles have revolutionized the industry, there is still quite a lot to master with any new system, and it helps to have training. The Outdoor Photography Guide

By Barry Craft

Outdoor photography can help you share the duty of the wilderness with your friends and family. If you will be taking pictures of wild animals, the first and most important rule is to be patient! Good pictures require lots of patience, so make sure you move slowly and don't scare the animals away. Keep far enough away so you don't scare the animals, but close enough where you can get good pictures.

It's important to remember that small animals will look small in a picture, unless you take the picture closer to ground level or the same level as the animal. This will make them appear bigger. You may need a zoom lens for this type of a photograph. This is probably something you will want to consider when purchasing a camera.

Even if you don't get any good pictures on the first day, don't get discouraged. There will be another opportunity to get that great shot. Remember that large wildlife can be photographed at a distance since they are big and can be seen easily.

Always be prepared since the right opportunity for that awesome shot can be there one second and gone the next. Be sure to capture the eyes of the animals that way it looks more like a portrait than a snapshot. This will make for a great photo.

Natural lighting is another important factor in outdoor photography. Depending on the time of year and time of day, your lighting will vary. The time of day, such as sunrise or sunset can give your photo a different personality and feeling because the angle of the sun will cast a different shadow.

You may have to use a fill flash to decrease the amount of shadows in the picture but keep it soft so it doesn't look too artificial. The worst time of day to take pictures is mid-day when the sun is directly overhead. The use of a soft flash can help offset the harsh shadows the sun creates at this time of the day.

The best way to ensure image brilliance is to use a tripod. The tripod will bring out the best in the lenses that you buy. Make sure you buy a sturdy, rigid tripod, as this will create the best images.

Make sure to keep your lens clean since sand or dust can create specks on all of your photos. If there is sand on your lens, you may not want to try cleaning it yourself. See a professional because if you scratch your lens, you will have to buy a replacement or else have scratches in all of your pictures, which is no good.

After you download your pictures to your computer, you can use a photo editing program if needed.

Blogging 101

By Kim and Charles Petty

If writing is an art, then, blogging is one way of using words to come up with an art. This is because people who are into blogging are the ones who are artistic on their own sense, carefully choosing words that would best describe their feelings, sentiments, wishes, desires, and everything.

Basically, blogs were first introduced as weblogs that refer to a "server's log file." It was created when web logging hit the virtual market. Since its inception in the mid-1990s, web logging gradually saturated the virtual community making the Internet a viable source of greater information.

However, with web logging, you still need a web site and domain names, but with blogging, you do not need anything just an account with blog providers. In most cases, these kinds of blogs are free of charge.

With the onset of blogging in the industry, personal journaling had been a common ground for people who wish to be known all over the world. However, not literally famous as this is not a case on being popular or well-known personality.

Generally, blogs are created for personal use. Like a journal, people can write their daily adventures, sentiments, and whatever ideas they want to express online.

Nevertheless, with the advent of the online businesses, blogs had gradually taken the limelight in providing businesses a chance to boost their productivity online. This is where the business blogs have taken the limelight.

Business blogs are, basically, created to advertise the services or products of a certain web site or online business in order to increase online sales.

Moreover, business blogs are also one way of promoting the company so that the other readers will know that a certain company exists online. With blogs, entrepreneurs are able to establish a name in the virtual market through articles that can be very useful in the reader's life.

From there, you can make money out of blogs by simply syndicating it to your business' web site. This can be done through the RSS technology.

So, if you are thinking to create a blog, whether for business or for pleasure, you need to know some tips that could help you get through and make your blog one of the interesting blogs online.

Here's how:

1. Consider your audience

Even if your blog is generally personal, still, it would be better to consider the minds of your readers. You have to think of something that would interest them.

After all, most of the reasons of people who write blogs are not at all confined to their own personal motives. Most of them would love to be "heard" (or read) and would love to be known, in some way or another, even for just a minute. Hence, it is very important to come with a write up that everybody can understand, not necessarily that these people can relate to it but they can understand it.

2. Pictures speaks a thousand words

To make your blogging worth the browsing effort of your readers, it would be extremely nice if you will put some pictures in it. It does not necessarily mean you have to place a picture of yourself. Any photographs will do as long as it does not pose danger or insult to anyone who will be reading your blog.

3. Make constructive and beneficial blogs

Even if you are free to write anything you wan to say to the world, still, it would be better to create some write-ups that would be beneficial to your readers.

After all, its information technology that you have there so better be inclined to provide information rather than sheer quirky entertainment.

4. Avoid making multifaceted and complicated blogs

In order to have an interesting blogs, try not to use some highly technical and highfalutin words. After all, it is not a science discourse or a debate that you are making, so better stick to simple facts and short blogs.

Bear in mind that most people who use the Internet usually do more scanning than scrutinizing each site word for word. Therefore, it would be better to come with blogs that will not bore your readers just because you have these lengthy articles.

5. Make it interactive

As much as possible and if your capacity will allow it, make your blog interactive. Yu can do this by placing some video or audio clips in your blog.

You can even place an area for comments or for some feedbacks. In this way, you can get some impressions or reactions of other people. Who knows, you might even gain some friends just by making them feel at home in your blog site.

Indeed, blogs are not created just for the mere fun of it. It also has its own purpose in the world of the Internet. Therefore, for people who wish to harness their craft, as far as writing is concerned, blogs are the best way to do it.

As they say, blogging is the contemporary term of creative and commercial writing.

A Guide To Get Cheap Concert Tickets

By Chris Channing

Musicians are looking to do what they love most and make a living from it at the same time. This often means that fans will have to pay hefty concert ticket prices in order to see such artists. But to the savvy consumer, there are ways to get around paying full price or even paying at all, given the right knowledge and determination.

The first step in finding a cheap concert ticket is to simply browse the Internet. Physical locations are able to markup prices because they have less competition. On the Internet there are hundreds of different places that sell concert tickets- meaning that there is much more competitive pricing available for consumers.

The next step in finding cheap concert tickets is to find online resources that offer coupons to Internet users. These coupon websites often keep promotional codes on file for big-name concert ticket resources. Using such coupons when proceeding to checkout can save the consumer a formidable amount of money in the long run.

Internet users can also take advantage of the online auction craze. These online auctions that are available can give huge discounts to consumers, simply because there isn't usually a high demand for some concerts. This means that consumers can purchase tickets at incredible discounts if the right buyer is found. This also works in reverse, however, as incredibly popular concerts will make auction websites a poor choice for discounts.

Other resources in getting cheap concert tickets come from radio stations. Certain radio stations will allow certain games of chance in order to give out completely free concert tickets. This usually takes the form of holding a contest to see who can call in with an answer to a trivia question or even calling in to be a certain numbered caller.

Lastly, it's always good to visit concert grounds on the day of the concert. If you still don't have tickets and you are still looking to get some- there is a great chance that someone who no longer wants their tickets or has extra will be willing to sell them. Because of their desperation in trying to sell the tickets, the price of the concert tickets is usually quite low, unless of course the concert is sold out and demand for them is high.

Final Comments on Cheap Concert Tickets

Getting a hold of a discounted concert ticket isn't so hard. With some effort, getting a large discount on lottery tickets, or even obtaining them free, is more tan possible. All that is required is that consumers exhaust all options before deciding on which source to go with.

The usage of the Internet is a key factor in getting the best prices on concert tickets. Because of this, you may wish to visit a library or Internet cafe if you do not have access to the Internet. Doing so will allow anyone with the right sense of determination to obtain concert tickets for far less than retail price.

Digital Camera Basics

By Barry Craft

The first thing you should understand before you buy a camera is megapixels. Why do megapixels matter? Megapixels matter because the number of megapixels determines the resolution and size of the image. The more megapixels, the larger a print of the image can be.

Nowadays, 5 megapixels is a good starting point for an entry level digital camera. You can expect excellent prints at 4 x 6 and even as large as 8 x 10.

Another important factor to consider is what kind of camera best suits your needs. A digital SLR (Single Lens Reflex) camera is more expensive, but provides higher quality and many more options. This would be the equivalent of a 35 mm camera but in a digital version.

if you have experience with 35mm cameras, you will recognize many of the same features and more. A very popular feature of the digital SLR camera is the ability to change lenses.

If you are not as particular with your photography and want a simpler camera to use, you may want to consider a point and shoot camera which generally will cost much less. In addition, point and shoot cameras are smaller and easier to use. Another advantage of this type of camera is they usually have many automated features and preset shooting programs which allow you to shoot beautiful photographs even if you don't have much experience.

After you get a camera, you must choose a good memory card for your camera. The most popular types of memory cards for digital cameras are MultiMediaCard (MMC), Memory Stick (MS), Smartmedia (SM), Secure Digital (SD), xD-Picture Card (xD), and CompactFlash (CF). Certain cameras require certain memory card types, so make sure you ask an expert which memory card is right for the camera you have.

One of the most important things to consider with memory cards is how many pictures you plan on taking it at one time before downloading them to your computer. Also if you plan to use the higher resolution settings on your camera, you will able to take fewer pictures so you may want to invest in a memory card that has a larger storage capacity.

You have to learn how to transfer the pictures from your camera when she take them since you can only sender and the pictures once they are on your computer. Your camera most likely came with the USB cable as an option. You can also purchase a USB card reader that plugs into your computer.

By using a card reader instead of the USB cable, it allows you to save the batteries on your camera because the camera does not have to be powered on during the transfer process. A memory card reader simply plugs into your computer using the USB cable and the card reader has various slots and all you do is remove the memory card from your camera and insert it into the card reader.

Usually when you plug your camera into your computer using the USB cable and window usually pop opera alerting you that your camera is not connected pending on the software you have installed it may prompt you to transfer the pictures at that point. If you have a Mac computer especially the newer Mac computer you would simply go to iPhoto and there is a help menu on the top of your screen and it will instruct you how to download your pictures.

Once you have completed the download process and the pictures are on your computer, you can delete the pictures from your memory card which will free up additional space. That way you can take many more pictures. Is a very good idea to regularly make a backup copy of the pictures on the computer neither burn them to an external hard drive or perhaps any CD or DVD you invested a lot of time and effort in taking those beautiful pictures and you would not want to lose them.

Australian Aboriginal Art for your Home

By Barry C Numgerie

Immigrants traveled from Asia to the North of Australia and populated out harsh north. In some recently discovered areas of the Kimberly's and Arnhem land their is overwhelming proof of the Arrival of the first Australians.

In the North of Australia these first humans faced an harsh environment, with wild weather and animals. People made homes in Sandstone caves, which even today some of these caves show traces of these early inhabitants. Daily living implements, shells, leaves, bark, sticks and stones covered the floor. People soon discovered that ochre provided a great tool to paint and soon were making records of their daily life.

In the case of rock painting, the original Aboriginal Art, dates have been obtained for pigment directly on the walls and for painted fragments buried in deposits of campsite material. Techniques for dating have usually involved radio-carbon dating of material, but there are also newer techniques now available including optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS).

Radiocarbon dating is limited to a maximum age of around 40 000 years, and the newer techniques are required for dating of older materials. AMS is a new radiocarbon dating method enabling the dating of much smaller samples of carbon than the traditional radiocarbon (C-14) method.

Ochre is the main pigment used in rock art and is found across most of Australia. Pieces of ochre, have been found in almost all of Australia's ice-age sites. Most have been radiocarbon dated and the dates range from 10 000 to 40 000 years. Proving that Aboriginal Art can trace its beginnings back to the stone age. But it hasn't remained there. Aboriginal Art now encompasses the use acrylics, canvas, glass, and ceramic tiles as well as ochres, bark and wood.

Because of the difficulty in presenting art in caves to a wider audience it was only a matter of time before art moved onto canvas and tiles. With the early artist creating a dedicated following many of their paintings and carvings have appreciated phenomenally , some showing unprecedented growth.

With there being all manner of art to invest in aboriginal art offers a great way to get art that your neighbors and friends may have never heard of. With this type of art it is very easy to find a person that is new to the market but has been doing it for awhile. If you can get the right painter at the right time you could have a great win.

You will then have a valuable and authentic piece of aboriginal art, there is nothing quiet like watching a piece of art bout cheap go for $50000 dollars. While many artist will never achieve this type of fame it seems that more aboriginal paintings and carvings are appreciating faster.

Quilts: A Keepsake for Your Generation

By Sara Musfeldt

The women in my family have all been quilters, going back three generations to my great-grandmother. When I was growing up, I never understood why they would spend months under a lamp creating a quilt, one stitch at a time. When they were done they would put their beautifully handmade quilt in a safe place away from the sun, dust bunnies, and dirty little hands.

Now that I am grown, I appreciate the time they spent creating those quilts. I finally understand why they put them away; the sun, dust bunnies, and my dirty hands would have ruined their beautiful handmade quilts. Now that my grandmother and great-grandmother are gone, I cherish the memories I have of them. The memory of them will live on for generations in the beautiful quilts they left behind.

Due to technological advances, quilting can now be produced in masses. Mass production, however, has increased the value of those custom-designed, handmade quilts from the days of yore. However, this brings up the question "What about those quilts from days of yore?"

Some quilters still make quilts completely by hand. The pieces of fabric, which are usually squares, are chosen for artistic or similar reasons. The fabric and design that hold the squares together are chosen with the long life of a quilt in mind rather than efficiency and mass production.

The mass produced quilts that are available from retailers or online vendors are cheap, and production is fast. It may be possible to order a custom-made quilt in which you are allowed to choose the colors of the fabric, the design, and even where the pieces of fabric will be placed on the quilt. However, these types of quilts are produced quickly, and most of the time, they end up looking like most other quilts. Custom, handmade quilts are artistic, individually created just for you, and will last lifetimes.

A custom quilter can help you decide what colors and design will be best for your theme or idea. Since fiber artists put their names on such quilts, they obviously care that your quilt turns out beautifully. This will not be the case for a quilt that is mass-produced.

If you intend for your quilt to be a keepsake, then a handmade quilt is by far your best option. Although they are more expensive and take longer to make than a mass-produced quilt, you will get a quilt that future generations will hide from dust bunnies, the sun, and the dirty hands of their children.

Blues Guitar

By John Libbo

Many years ago, for the first time ever live to an audience, Bob Dylan took his steps on the stage and began to play his electric guitar. He was completely, taken with his play and ignored the reaction of the audience to the obnoxious rock music. He continued plugging in and playing. His act was such a revolution of the music's world. That event occupied the front pages of all the newspapers that time. Based on the few differences between it and the blues music, the elder blues musicians listening to him caused the leaving of acoustic blues guitar in the dust.

Around 1930s, a movement had developed in Chicago with full success. Some of the blues musicians from Mississippi Delta are, brought their brands of that music to the city. The top famous artists of this industry in Chicago were Muddy Waters and Son House. They were playing the acoustic blues guitar until the audience became wild. When Howling Wolf came, he picked up the electric guitar and left the acoustic blues guitar away. The days of the new acoustic blues guitar began. Howling started with the assistance of other musicians recording classic acoustic blues on electric guitars, sending the new music to audiences. Later on, Robert Johnson became such a treasure.

For many years the electric guitar ruled the blues world and the Jimi Hendrix decided to record a short movie of himself playing and acoustic blues guitar and for just a little while we got to hear as close to the modern equivalent of those old classics that we will hear. As Jimi fired through Here My Train A Comin' it was just like being on the delta near the turn of the century when Robert Johnson would travel from small bar to small bar just to make a living playing his guitar. It was a great time that is lost forever.

The acoustic guitar will never be a basic tool that is similar to the one used to be previously. No doubt, it gets its due on blues and rock records. We cannot mistake the sound, since we know completely the rightness of the music played on it. This music arises from deep heart and the numbed soul. We will never listen to such a sweet music like that again.

The Country Bear Jamboree

By Steve Collins

When Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom premiered in 1971, it featured a great audio-animatronic show called The Country Bear Jamboree. As the name suggests, the show featured bears performing country music. The show was such a hit that capacity was expanded, Disneyland got its own Jamboree, and a second theatre was built to accommodate the crowds.

Originally, The Country Bear Jamboree was not created for Disney's theme park. In the 1960s, the company had been planning to unveil a Mineral King Ski Resort and the musical attraction was being created to entertain guests there. The ski resort never came into being, but the bears so captivated Walt Disney's fancy before his death that they were added to the parks.

The show starred roughly twenty characters, almost all bears. Some rose from the floor, others descended from the ceiling, others were revealed by the opening of a curtain when their moment to perform arrived. The master of ceremonies was named Henry. Joining him were Liver Lips McGrowl, Terrence, Teddi Barra, Trixie, the Sun Bonnet Trio, The Five Bear Rugs, and others. The show amused visitors to the parks for over two decades.

In 2002, Disney produced a movie loosely based on the Country Bear Jamboree. Set in a world where humans and talking bears lived with one another, the story stars Haley Joel Osment as "Beary," a young bear raised by humans. The plot centers on his meeting a has-been country band of bears reminiscent of The Eagles. Because of Beary's encouragement, the band members decide to reunite. He inspires them to perform one final concert to save their old theatre, Country Bear Hall, from destruction be Thimble, played by eternal "villain" Christopher Walken. The movie also features Queen Latifah, Brian Setzer, and a short appearance by Elton John.

While only loosely based on the much loved Disney attraction, The Country Bears will bring back happy memories for anyone who ever saw the original. With great country music and likeable characters, the movie is a nice chance to spend some time with your kids.

Why You Should Buy Your CDs and DVDs Online

By Elizabeth Murphy

These days, online shopping is very common. Buying CDs and DVDs online really makes sense for a variety of reasons, including simple convenience. Most online stores are very secure and you dont need to worry about credit card theft with their secure systems. Others offer third party payment options which help to protect you as you spend money and make your purchases online.

Why Buying CDs and DVDs Online Is a Good Idea

Think about when you want to buy a certain CD at the store. You have to get to the music store first, which may or may not be out of your way. Even a nearby shop will take you 5-10 minutes to get to. Then you have to find the music youre looking for by searching through the bins of CDs . . . only to find that they dont have what youre looking for. Then its off to the next store. When you find the CD you want, you then have to stand in line to pay for it and finally, head home to listen to your new CD. Its a pain in the neck!

Compare that to sitting down in your home, pulling up a CD store online and searching for the CD you want, listening to a sample track or two and then, in just a couple of clicks, purchasing your CD. It arrives a few days later, at your door. Much easier, wouldnt you say? There are plenty of other advantages to buying CDs and DVDs online, too.

Time. Youll have to wait for the CD or DVD to be delivered to you, but you can be doing other things during that time, which isnt an option when youre standing in line at the local music emporium.

Searching. Online search boxes make it super easy to find exactly what youre looking for, even if you arent sure who the artist is, what the song title is and only remember a couple lines from the chorus. Just want to watch all the movies with Johnny Depp in them? Then search his name and youll have a huge selection to choose from!

Browsing. When you want to just check out a new band or movie, most online stores make it easy to listen to music clips from each album. You can also view previews of new movies online. You dont have to wait for someone else to finish using the headphones and theres no time limit, you can spend all day listening or watching clips and previews.

Gifts. If youre looking for the perfect gift for a friend or family member who doesnt live near you, buying online is the perfect choice. You can usually specify a different shipping address than billing address and even get your CDs or DVDs gift wrapped and with a card included. This makes those last minute shopping excursions far easier!

Availability. Your local stores are only open so late. What if you want to buy the latest DVDs at 3 am? Not a problem with online stores, theyre open 24-7. And, when local shops run out of the hottest music album, you can still get them online!

Buying CDs and DVDs online is a great way to go and many more people are choosing this method of purchasing over heading to the local shops. Its far more convenient and youll find that you are able to enjoy your shopping experience a lot more. Plus, what could be better than doing all your birthday shopping from your computer at 1 in the morning?

Sharkboy and Lavagirl, A Dreamy Classic

By Steve Collins

The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl takes viewers on a wild ride in the grand tradition of fantastical films such as Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, which is set in a bizarre world, and films such as The Never-ending Story, in which mistreatment by bullies sends the victim into a dream world where he can be a hero. The merger of fantasy and reality in the film is intriguing.

The action centers around ten year old Max. A dreamer who is often made fun of at school, he creates his own friends from his vast imagination. Shark Boy and Lava Girl are super heroes from Planet Drool who come exploding into Max's school room one day looking for his help in saving their planet from encroaching darkness. As their world was created in Max's lively imagination, the super heroes advise him that he is the only one who can save it.

Their adventures together are truly wild by any stretch of the imagination. The lines between fantasy and reality blur as the villains on Planet Drool are often real life foes of Max transformed into strange antagonists. For instance, his actual Earth teacher, Mr. Electricidad, becomes the evil Mr. Electric, whose fierce animated power cords attack the heroes. By the pinnacle of the movie, the action has returned to Earth.

The surreal quality of Planet Drool sounds like the game Candy Land meshed with Willie Wonka's chocolate factory. The characters ride in a banana-split boat on the "Stream of Consciousness", take the uncontrollable Train of Thought to the Land of Milk and Cookies, and get a Crystal Heart from an Ice Princess in the Land of Ice. Revealingly, the screenwriter, Robert Rodriguez, got considerable amount help with the plot from his children. One, seven-year-old Racer, was actually given screen credit!

While the film may not have as much of an attraction for grown-ups as it does for children, it is still an interesting story. The story of a victim triumphing over a bully is always a favorite plot with youngsters.

When XBox Meets Disney, the Results are Huge

By Steve Collins

Because of the internet, the world is a radically altered place, and changes happen overnight. It has metamorphosed the way we make friends with one another, the way we learn, and the way we entertain ourselves. About a year ago, for instance, the Xbox Live Marketplace was introduced to let users to download movie rentals on demand. This innovative service was embraced immediately. Within seven months, more than 10 million movies had been rented via Xbox's online downloading service. Currently, it is the only company offering on demand movies in high definition.

Their initial successes prompted Microsoft Game Studios to form an agreement with the entertainment industry giant, Walt Disney Studios. The partnership was announced in July 2007 and included thirty-five films. New and old Disney classics are among the offerings, as well as movies from Miramax, Touchstone, and other Disney properties. Therefore, there are titles to appeal to viewers in every age group from little ones to golden agers (assuming they have Xboxes!) The number of movies will expand in the future, as the plan calls for on demand rentals for new releases as they become available to the public.

Currently, movie downloading via Xbox Live is only offered to US residents, but the numbers are astounding for something so recent. Microsoft Game Studios has 7 million subscribers, and they project that number will jump to over 12 million within a year. The listing of Disney movies in the Xbox Live Marketplace is a boon for the company. When Xbox meets Disney, the potential for success is incredible.

Clearly, the public has welcomed this modern way to enjoy movies in the home. No one has to go out to the rental store; no one has to wait in line for that hot new release everyone else in the country has also been drooling over! On demand rentals give you to get the titles you want when you want them

Draw And Paint Better Pictures... Give them Character And Life!

By Michael Dale

Paintings and drawings that are perfect looking copies can appear mechanical and lifeless. In the search for perfection be careful that you aren't missing the key ingredient all artists should search for

"An interesting picture will give the feeling of life"

The texture of the canvas adds depth to an oil painting. The finished painting isn't dull and flat. By building layer upon layer of paint an artist creates a work of art that has interest and character

"With a surface of texture and depth"

But, that isn't all that makes a masterpiece. The painting has its own history. There are background stories that help create great Art

What you don't see when you look at a painting are the plans and preparations. There are thoughts, ideas and research hidden behind each brushstroke

* There are unknown preparatory drawings that add to a painting's storyline

* Color sketches hidden in old art folders

* There will be re-workings that are scraped away or covered with later layers of paint

Even if you can copy exactly what you see in front of you, you need to give your painting more

* Your painting needs understanding and feeling before it becomes Art

* Your painting needs flair and expression to give it character

* Your painting's success comes from your time and dedication

Artists who use reference photographs can combine details from more than one photograph to create a new reality. You can play with subject details and backgrounds to develop new ideas when you

* Introduce recollections and memories

* Tell a story with your picture

* Introduce fresh color

An active drawing allows you to get away with mistakes when you work from real life. You can disguise weakness in your drawing skills with confident line-work even poor perspectives

* With a still life drawing, let the sweep of movement of your ink drawn arcs mask the slightly distorted shape of a vase of flowers

* Lively pencil shading can hide body form errors in figure drawing

* In a landscape sketch, a quick swish of charcoal will make your trees move with the wind

* A swirling dash of crayon can capture the power of Sea waves

Easily improve your drawings by letting your pencil marks show. Leave your sketch outlines showing to add more interest.

Don't hide your talents. Allow the painting process to distinguish your original artwork from a machine produced print copy

* With oils and acrylics you can show your painting skills when you allow visible brush marks in finished paintings

* You can lift your paintings with a splash of color

* Use water to carry color in your flowing watercolor paintings

Don't let your art suffer as an art beginner or intermediate amateur. Take the lead from professional artists and add soul to your drawing and painting

How To Find Cheap Nintendo Wii Systems

By Chris Channing

There is a common problem associated with gamers today. Gamers don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on expensive gaming consoles- yet they still want to be able to relax to the excitement of console gaming as it stands today. For those who look hard enough, there is a light at the end of the tunnel- the trick is just finding out where to get the Nintendo Wii without the inflated costs.

How Gamers Purchase Cheap Nintendo Wii Consoles

The Internet brings a large range of possibilities of obtaining a Wii. There are options for all sorts of gamers- from auctions to contests, to even filling out offers for companies in exchange for a Nintendo Wii.

Auction websites such as eBay will often list the cheapest products- both new and used. These products are generally fairly safe in purchasing, thanks to an excellent buyer protection program that eBay maintains. This makes finding the absolute cheapest Nintendo Wii possible regardless of the lack of stock that most stores suffer.

A new popular means of obtaining a discounted or free Nintendo Wii comes from filling out offers or completing surveys. These tasks earn websites money, and they can then offer prizes such as the Nintendo Wii. But be wary, for many of these websites turn out to be scams or demand that consumers do offers that cost money. Only engage in using these websites if they are highly trusted and reviewed by others.

Other Internet websites that can help save money on a Nintendo Wii include coupon websites. These websites find the best coupons to make the Nintendo Wii much cheaper in select stores. Searching a few good coupon websites can make the Nintendo Wii much cheaper as a result, depending on the offer and the store that the coupon corresponds to.

Some websites and companies buy damaged or refurbished Nintendo Wii consoles, fix them, and then attempt to sell them at cheaper prices than what they retail for. This is a great way to get a much better deal, but the thought that the console was once damaged or broken can worry some consumers. To help remedy this fact, some websites offer warranties that promise to fix damaged goods over a certain amount of time.

Of all the sources available in obtaining a cheap Nintendo Wii, be sure to not focus on any one specific source. Investigate all of your options before committing to one specific way of getting your Nintendo Wii at discount rates. Doing so will enable you to obtain a cheap Nintendo Wii much less costly than what they retail for; all that is required is a little perseverance and effort.

Download Music for iPod - 10 Factors of a Good Download Site

By Davion Wong

If you own an iPod, you probably are always on the lookout for affordable sources to download music for iPod. Apart from iTunes, you may have realized that there are similar services on the internet. But it can really be a challenge to figure out which is suitable.

These are the factors to consider when shopping for a service.

1. Huge selection of music and multi-genre database. It must also be constantly updated so that you can find the latest releases.

2. Best value for your money: there are different payment schemes, but if you want to download music for your iPod with no limits and as cheap as one can get, unlimited music download sites with a lifetime membership are the answer to all your needs.

3. No hidden charges. Make sure you know what exactly you will have to pay and eliminate additional expenses. Ideally, you should only pay for membership or a track download, but not for downloading or any other software, ability to move the downloaded files to a portable player (iPod in your case), and so on.

4. High quality of soundtracks. Unfortunately, even paid music websites sometimes fail to provide good quality of the files due to poor encoding or other reasons. Not to mention free P2P websites, where the quality of the shared files is almost always lousy.

5. Check to ensure that the songs are in MP3, AAC and WMA formats. These are the only ones compatible with your iPod player. Other formats will need to be converted and if the service provides the software, it is still quite alright.

6. Full support and easy navigation. If you have to spend hours trying to figure out how the stuff works, move on. There are plenty of user-friendly websites where you can download music for iPod without any hassle. Good technical support available 24/7 is another helpful feature.

7. Quick downloading speed, full version songs and correct song titles are important. Paid websites normally get these right. The same however cannot be said about free music sharing sites. These are notorious for slow speeds, incomplete songs and often give you a wrong track.

8. PC protection. You need to make sure that the site offers you complete protection from viruses, worms, Trojans, adware, spyware and all kinds of harmful codes. This is to be assured that when you download music for iPod, you do so in a safe environment.

9. Secured environment for payment and a privacy policy. Since you could be using a credit card to make payment, the last thing you want to happen is a leak of your private details.

10. No infringement of copyright laws. The site must be authorized to provide the music files. Professional ones do tie ups with record companies to offer the music so that when you download music for iPod, you need not worry about breaking the law at all. The same cannot be said at some totally free P2P sites.

Read a full review of the most popular services at my entertainment and start to download music for iPod within the next few minutes.

How To Dance Cha-Cha - Timing

By Louis Trayle

Like most modern music, Cha Cha music is 4/4 time (4 beats to a bar of music, and therefore four dance steps to a bar of music. The fourth beat of the music screams for you to step side and close - this step, with the drag of the foot side, then the drag of the foot to close, produces the characteristic Cha Cha sound, from which the name of the dance is derived.

If you are having trouble understanding the basic movement of Cha-Cha which is usually said to be slow, slow, quick-quick, slow, then rephrasing it to "rock, rock, side-close, side", makes it far easier to grasp.

In most Latino dances, you commence your steps on the 2nd beat of the music and change weight from one leg to another between the beats. In Cha Cha your feet only move on the 1st, 2nd and 4th beats. The change of weight which gives the dance its look and feel occurs half way through the 1st and 2nd beats, on the 3rd beat, half way through the 4th beat and on the 1st beat.

Counting from the 2nd beat of the music, my preferred count is 2 & 3, Cha-Cha, 1 - try the basic movements and this will become meaningful.

There are two parts to timing. The first is the static parts of the beat that is through an entire track and dictates when to move your feet. Another one is the tempo of the music. The tempo determines how fast you should make a spin/turn, tells you to move, take a step or pause. If you grasp all of these secrets you'll be a master cha-cha dancer.

It's almost impossible to miss a Cha Cha beat in a song. You'll always hear two slower beats and three faster ones. The quick beats determine how you'll move from side and close, then cha cha cha.

How to Take Care of Your New Tattoo

By James Beckett

You are probably in the minority if you are going to go ahead with the decision to get that tattoo because a lot of people get scared off by the process. Lack of knowledge is probably the biggest culprit for this happening because the fear of getting a tattoo that ends up as a health nightmare of lack of awareness how to live with a tattoo after you get one runs off a lot of potential body art lovers. And when you add to that a media perception of tattoo artists as unsavory characters who operate dirty, back alley operations is far too common and radically incorrect. To start with finding out that tattooists are professionals like anyone else helps a lot. They want your tattoo experience to be healthy and successful as much as you do.

Yes there are some tattoo salons that are not operated in a clean and honest way. But you can find bad apples in any field of business so we can't fault the entire industry for a few bad operators. But it does mean that you should take the time to make sure the tattooist you want to use lives up to high health standards in giving tattoos. A salon that is doing body art should be a legitimate business and one that has a good reputation in the community. You are entirely within your rights to ask for references of happy and healthy former customers and to call those references. Then if you do all that and you even suspect the tattooist isn't trustworthy, just move on until you find one who is.

When you put the health of your skin in the hands of a tattoo artist, you want to know they take that responsibility seriously. Their care and concern will be reflected in three ways. First, they will know their stuff when it comes to ointments and cleansers to use while the tattoo is being applied so the entire process is antiseptic. Secondly, after the tattoo is on, you want to see them clean it and bandage it so you can walk out of there knowing it is well cared for day one. And third, the tattoo shop should give you instructions and perhaps even additional ointments and bandages to take care of it over the next week or two so it will heal up well while leaving behind a beautiful tattoo.

You are going to have the instinct to wash the tattoo area as though it is dirty. After the tattoo process. If the tattooist did all of the steps properly, your tattoo may be the cleanest part of your body at that point. It is good to keep it clean, obviously and change the covering frequently but the tattoo should remain dry for several days to avoid any chances of infections or other problems. As soon as there is no chance of infection related fluids and the ink is dry enough to not smudge, you should go without the bandage sometimes to let your skin breathe and recover.

Talk to your tattooist both about the ointment he uses during the process and what kind of treatment he would recommend for the recovery period. It will almost certainly be something you can get at the local drug or grocery store. You will use this treatment for the next week or so but be gentle when you apply the ointment directly to the tattoo. Change the covering at least once a day so it is completely clean and don't wash the tattoo area with soap for at least a week to avoid irritating the open skin that is still getting over the trauma of the tattoo.

The important time of more intense care will be the first week after you get the tattoo but you will need to continue to favor it for a week or two afterward until it is completely healed. In addition to medicated ointment, after things are moving along on the recovery trail, you can switch to a non-perfumed lotion to keep the skin smooth and soft as well. Any baby oil or lotion that is good enough for a newborns skin is perfect for yours during this delicate time.

The final step of healing will be phase that may be the hardest for you of all of them but you have to be ready for it so you preserve the beauty of the tattoo you have worked so hard to get. When the tattoo area develops scabs, you will feel an instinct to work on them with your fingers. Resist that instinct because allowing the skin to heal as it already knows how to do will sure you don't remove some of the tattoo itself by working on that scabbing before it has finished doing its job.

Getting a tattoo is just the beginning of your life as a tattoo owner. Taking good care of it and the skin under it will assure that it will continue to look cool for a long time to come. And that's what you want from something that you made an investment for both time and money in and that will be with you for the rest of your life.

Nobody wants to be the parent who permits their children watch movies all the time or who uses the television as a baby sitter. However, on a rainy day or for a special occasion, it is welcoming to be able to have a shelf of movies that are favorite fare for kids. It is also a wonderful idea to have a portable DVD player to entertain kids on long car rides or airplane flights or on the occasional days when your children have to accompany you to the office!

One sure bet for entertaining kids of all ages is a Disney movie. The same movies you (and your parents and grandparents, even) grew up with are just as much fun today. All the great old titles are just as fun for children today as they were to their original audiences. How many other movies can make that claim?

Sharing Disney favorites with your kids and grandkids has become a cherished rite of passage. Parents look forward to the chance to share their childhood favorites with their own little ones-and remarkably, they enjoy them just as much as adults as they did when they were children!

Not all Disney movies are targeted for children anymore, however. Now that Disney controls the films of a number of other studios, their library has grown to include many "grown up" movies, too. Those who grew up counting on the studio for great entertainment can be just as assured of excellent entertainment in adulthood. There are Disney movies for all ages!

Owning Disney DVDs means you always have the favorites you love most right at your fingertips. They make welcome gifts, too. For those with small children around, it is especially nice to be able to pull out a special movie and snuggle up on a long afternoon.

By George Kissi

Prior to the advent of the iPod, the music industry was a pretty depressed arena. Record sales kept declining, artists were performing poorly at concerts with increasing ticket prices. With the inception of the MP3, digital music became a household idea. But with the invention of the iPod, this idea was truly given the wings to fly to a whole new level.

The iPod converted digital music into the only truly admired, authentic and beneficial kind of music. Quite a few musicians who are capable of creating outstanding singles are usually not able to duplicate their effort for an entire album as they are usually under duress to come up with a hit for radio as a priority thus making the rest of the album less pleasing to the ears. As a consequence numerous lovers of music who ordinarily obtain this album for that awesome single are left reeling with the album.

As a by-product of iTunes and the iPod, lovers of music have the abilty to simply purchase the hit single as opposed to the whole album and enjoy all their adored hit songs instead of having an enumerate number differing single CDs! With the invention of the iPod Touch, Apple emphasised on ease of use of their digital music and video players.

An incredible touch screen that is wonderfully developed to alleviate the effort necessary in using every iPod's funtions, has is the central focus of these current iPods. Nevertheless as fresh iPods are cultivated, it becomes required to bring out accessories, and iPod Touch accessories are indeed exemplary, distinctly and assertively suitable for the owner of the iPod Touch.

If the iPod is fashionable, the iPod Touch is even more fashionable! As a by-product, iPod Touch accessories are absolutely the only accessories that are suited for this exceptional iPod.

It is necessary to ascertain that the accessories you buy are suited for for your iPod in order to fully enjoy it. There are numerous normal wear and accidental damage prevention accessories like cases, carrying bags and arm bands that. Since the iPod Touch has a touch screen feature, these accessories normally do not shield or prevent the screen from damage.

Nevertheless screen cleaners are at hand to bolster the life of the screens. There's also available certain cases not necessarily useful while the iPod Touch is on, but can be used as protection against normal wear when it's not on. Arm bands are developed for those interested in exercising or running regularly while listening to their favorite music.

Additional iPod Touch accessories makes it possible to share your music in your household or simply play your music through your home stereo system. A variety of docking systems are available to connect the iPod to external speakers or computers in a secure and safe manner thus enabling the music from the iPod to be heard through the external speakers.

These docking systems must also be exclusively designed for the iPod touch. Since iPods comes in different sizes, using a non suitable accessory may not only damage the iPod but also the accessory. These iPod Touch accessories are generally worth the cost as they allow you turn the iPod into a carriable juke box whether it's to bring a party to live or just for listening pleasure.

DVD Copy Software - Quick & Easy Backups

By Jay Smith

Have you ever wanted to make a backup copy of a DVD movie? Do you ever record your own videos and want to send a copy of your DVD to a friend or family?

With things being the way things are (Cheaper, Faster, Smaller) it is becoming exceedingly effortless to produce high quality back-up copies of your DVD movies. With just a few simple clicks of the mouse, most software programs will have your back-up DVD completed in 20 to 40 minutes. However, when shopping for DVD copy software, there are several things to keep in mind

As with most gadgets and software you will find many to choose from when you actually start looking, and of course some are going to be better than others. One of the main points to consider is the ease of use of the program. What good will a software program do you if it is too completed to figure out?

There are many options, features and choices in DVD copy programs. It's best to know what you be using the software for before shopping - will you be copying home movies, episodes, DVD movies, etc? By giving this a little thought beforehand you will make a better purchasing decision in the end.

Additionally, another feature to consider is speed. The speed of a good DVD copy program should be no greater than 45 minutes to create a DVD copy. Some of the faster software programs will get the job done in 20 to 30 minutes.

A quick note the speed also depends on your computer hardware and software. New computers with enormous space and high speed processors will take much less time than those computers purchased just a few years ago.

Quality output is also a very important feature unless you like to watch snow and static. With the better DVD copy software programs quality isn't an issue as you will have a hard time telling the difference between the copy and the original.

Therefore, before you purchase software to copy a DVD, do your research and pick the program that will fit your needs and include the features that you want. Remember, you want fast high quality back-ups and with today's software choices there is no reason to settle for something less.

Take the Time to Find a Good Tattoo Artist

By Marie Wilson

The reasons people get tattoos varies a lot. While one person gets one to declare love for his girl, another gets one to be part of a social group of pledge loyalty to a cause. Your reasons are your own and hopefully the reason isn't because you drank too much and got it on a dare. When you change the appearance of your skin with a tattoo, that is a big step and its best if you go about finding a good tattooist and tattoo parlor who can do a great job for you and will make the process fun and safe for you. To make sure that is exactly what happens, some well thought out questions are in order.

The perfect place to get ink done would be a well respected tattoo parlor that also is a well established business in your community, if you can find that. This is the kind of establishment who will seek the finest in professionalism and maintain tight rules about giving clean and healthy tattoos to the customers. A business that is looking to be there a long time doesn't want to send away unhappy customers or see customer get an infection because of their negligence. So the first level of "auditing" of the place you are thinking about using for your tattoo is to make sure the business itself is run in an honest way with high professional standards.

After making sure the tattoo parlor is trustworthy, move on to the tattoo artists themselves. If you find out that the parlor uses a lot of tattooists and you take a number and go with the next available one like at the barber shop, that might be a good reason to take your business elsewhere. A tat is something that means something to you. So it pays to get to know the body art professional who will give you your tattoo before you sit down in the chair to have it applied.

Build a checklist of great questions to ask when you interview a tattooist for the job. At the top of that list is his experience because you don't want someone new to the job. If the person who will create your first work of body art has had good training and been at it a few years, he will do a better job because he knows what he is doing. Along with the tattooist's career and job performance, you are within your rights to ask for, and check, references of satisfied customers. By doing this kind of "checking up" on the tattoo artists, when the time comes for him to apply the needle to your skin, his abilities and talents will not be in question.

In addition to know who is going to perform this tattoo, its good to understand the process from beginning to end and even after you walk out of the tattoo parlor with your tat in place. Find out in advance if there is service after the money is paid and that the parlor and the artist support you as you get used to the tattoo. Perhaps the tattoo will need some additional refinement or some repair if the healing process takes a toll on it. The tattooist should provide that service. But make sure you know that before you pay your money and get the tattoo because after the fact is too late.

You will want to know the nitty gritty of the costs of the tattoo as well. This should not be something they make up on the spot. They should have price lists which also include any supplies. If they have a lot of tattooists, are the better ones more expensive? And get a feel for what makes one tattoo more expensive than another. You might be happier with the least expensive tattoo. If the tattoo parlor tries to talk you into a more expensive design, that might be good reason to shop elsewhere.

But of all the questions you should be prepared to ask, the ones about whether the process will be done in a clean and healthy way are the most important. The best way to confirm the tattooist is doing good clean work is to watch them give one. This will be helpful if it's your first tattoo so you know what you are getting into and you will see for yourself that the artist who will be applying your tattoo is doing so with health and hygiene in mind. Also get the artist or the parlor to step through all of the care and cleaning issues you must be aware of after the tattoo is applied. It's your job to take care of your tattoo but it's their job to teach you how before you let them apply that pattern to your skin.

Your tattooist should be someone who instills trust in you. Even though you only know him or her for a short time, you want to feel comfortable and be able to ask all the questions in the world. They should be endlessly patient with questions and if you feel slightly insecure or anxious, the tattooist should be able to ease those anxieties. If that body artist can do that well and checks out your other tough standards, you have found the right person for the job of putting a delightful tattoo on your body.

Digital Audio Mixers for Sale or Rent

By Steve Collins

No one watching a live television feed such as the Grammys or the Academy Awards show, could fathom all that goes on behind the scenes! It may look smooth as butter on your television screen, but just beyond what the camera sees lies a veritable hive of activity complete with cameras, massive swinging jibs, boom mikes, many focused technicians, and miles and miles of wires. Tips on Playing Guitar Power Chords

By E Walker

Power Chords are an important aspect of playing lead guitar and lies somewhere between basic and intermediate guitar playing. Mostly used in classic rock music, power chords can be used in progressive, metal and other forms of rock music.

The power chords sound great on stage in a live gig but it is not something that you can learn overnight. You have to practice. You may be able to play a few power chords but to put them all together and actually sound good, it will take practice and accuracy. The one good thing about power chords is that they can make your lead guitar scream..real loud! They are easy and great to play around with.

Most guitarists don't consider power chords as real chords as it doesn't have 3 notes or more. Power chords normally have around 2 different types of notes. Some of the music players especially those who are good at playing lead guitar call it the power intervals as a result of the 2 different notes it contains. Usually you will find that a power chord consists of a root, which is a perfect 5th interval. The root note gets doubled at a rather high pitch and is called an octave. So if you are thinking of using power chords for playing lead guitar then you will be playing a perfect 5th interval.

One of the reasons why power chords are used for playing lead guitar is because you can play them anywhere on the neck and they will help you to render a harmonic texture to any song. Power chords never have any minor or major third intervals. They mostly consist of the 1, 5 and maybe another 1, which is an octave higher. Power chords are played on the bottom 2 or 3 strings of your lead guitar and are used mainly for distortion.

The best example of power chords is the intro of Dreamtheather's Pull me Under.Another reason why power chords are used in lead guitar is because when you try to play a lead using distortion, strumming on a full chord will definitely create a high level of dissonance. Apart from that if there is a fast chord change then it is easier and better to use power chords for playing fast. The two notes that are used in power chords on a lead guitar are the 1 and 5 degrees.

So we will need to start with 2 notes on power chords that have the root on the E-string. The power chord on the E string is the E5, which will also be known as the E5. This two note power chord will use only the root chord and the fifth chord, which will be E and B.

One of the most popular guitarists who have played the power chord successfully on his lead guitar is Pete Townshend. According to some of the guitar magazines like the Free-lance Star, the man who invented the power chord is Link Wray of the Link Ray and his Ray men. Bet you didn't know that!

By E Walker

Guitar backing tracks are essential armory that every lead guitarist should have. Without it, it would be difficult to play solos or lead guitar. If you have moved from the basic stage into the advanced stage then it doesn't mean that you are ready to play the solo or lead live on stage. There are many more aspects to playing a guitar solo and one of them is learning to play with guitar backing tracks.

The good thing is that you can purchase some of best professionally recorded guitar backing tracks from companies such as Planet of Rock. It will come for a cost depending on the track and the band. For example: if you want to practice your solo with a Eddie Van Halen or a Jimi Hendrix number, you do not really require a bassist, drummer and rhythm guitarist. All you need is the guitar backing track for that specific number and you will be good to go. These tracks are perfect for a nice jam session when you are practicing without a band.

The reason why every guitarist should use guitar backing tracks is because there are options you can have for practicing advanced lead guitar techniques. This is a type of product that will help you especially when you want to work on new licks or practice different type of scales like the blues scale, the pentatonic scales etc. You can even use guitar backing tracks for rhythm guitar.

One of the important aspects of guitar backing tracks is that it will help you to improve your timing immensely. You will never go out of tune or end up playing the wrong scale. The reason why most guitarists in their advanced learning stage use guitar backing tracks is because it helps them to prepare for live gigs.

Playing at a live gig is very different from playing in a studio. You will not have any room for mistakes as you will be playing right in front of an live and responsive audience. So you will need to hone your skills and the most effective way of doing that is by playing with guitar backing tracks. Guitar backing tracks are available for some of the top numbers in rock, metal, blues and alternative.

Beach Holidays for Fun in the Sun

By Charles and Kim Petty

Everyone loves beach holidays! The little ones can dig in the sand and splash in the lapping waves. The older ones can swim, get a tan, or just relax. The inquisitive types can explore for sea life, tide pools, and drift wood. The warm breezes and natural beauty are invigorating and restorative. Any trip, however, can cause discomfort if you do not plan well. Here are things you can do to make your beach holidays easier, safer, and more meaningful.

In many parts of the world, people head for their beach holidays in the family car. When planning a trip, it's always a good idea to give the car a good cleaning out first. This will give you more room for your luggage. Stock you glovebox, too, with a few first aid and comfort items, such as sunblock, acetominiphen for headaches, a roll of antacids, a few cough drops, and a few bandaids. Don't forget a couple of scrunchies or pony-tailers for long hair. Get the tires checked and replace any that are likely to go flat. Get an oil change if it's getting close. Road trips are not much fun when they include breakdowns. And whatever you do, make sure you have a map and a place to keep it handy.

Travelling with kids is always a challenge. They may be particularly excited and impatient when they know they are going on beach holidays. Make sure they have cool water bottles and healthy snacks to munch. Try a simple car game to make the time pass. Many kids like looking for letters of the alphabet on signs. If several people get involved it can be quite fun.

With beach holidays particularly, there is always a need to provide for skin safety. Be particularly careful about being in the sun for long stretches of time between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Use a sunblock with a high SPF rating and replace it after getting wet or drying off with your towel. The towel you choose can make a difference too. Thick towels get heavy and tend to trap a lot of sand. You may find you like thin towels at the beach. Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes and some sort of foot protection to keep your feet from being burned on the hot sand.

With a little preparation your beach holidays can be enjoyable and problem-free. When you arrive home you will be relaxed, refreshed, and ready for work. Take a minute to unpack and get your laundry going. It won't belong until the kids will be shouting, "When can we go on beach holidays again?"

Craft Idea for a Group: Make a Mural

By Charles and Kim Petty

Most craft ideas are geared to individuals, whether kids or adults. Sometimes you'd like to have a craft idea that works for a group of kids working together. Making a mural together is an idea that works for a group. By working together, you are creating something to decorate a shared area. Individual crafts can be displayed, but one unique item is often more effective than a group of items that are almost identical. In addition, sometimes kids' crafts, like it or not, just become clutter when they are taken home, and it isn't long before Mom throws it out. This craft idea of making a group mural can be displayed for several weeks and will not become clutter in anyone's home.

The basic materials for a kids' group mural is freezer paper. Freezer paper is about 18 inches wide, and it is very tough. One side is plastic coated. That is the side that is designed to be placed against the food. You will have better luck drawing on and gluing things onto the other side. Class or group murals can feature a number of different design elements. You can mix up some finger paint and let the children make hand prints (or even foot prints!) on the paper. You can let them scour old cast-off magazines and color catalogs for pictures they like and let them cut the pictures out and glue them on. They can add scribbles, designs, signatures, slogans, or pictures using markers, crayons, or gel pens. They can attach stickers to the mural as well. This craft idea is very flexible!

For making the mural, choose a topic that relates to the group in some way. If the group are girl scouts, for instance, and have been learning to camp, the mural can feature pictures of items related to camping. If you've been learning about dinosaurs, you can use them as a theme. If you want a really messy project that makes a cute mural for fall, mix up finger paint in fall colors. The children can each make a tree by first laying their forearm in brown paint. Then they lay their arm on the paper to make the trunk of the tree. They should spread out their fingers so their arm print has five short branches at the top. To make the leaves, the children make fingerprints all around the top of the tree using paints in other fall colors. If you add a few drops of dishwashing detergent to finger paint when mixing it up, it will be easier to clean off the children's arms. Do make sure they have old clothes or smocks for this craft idea.

Little preschoolers will like making a mural with an animal theme. You should probably find and cut out animal magazine pictures to start with, and then let the children choose the ones they like for gluing down. Glue sticks are neat to use with small children. They will paste some of the pictures upside down. Expect it and do not scold them. It is the process that is important in this craft idea. The children can also use animal cookie cutters dipped in finger paint to stamp animals on the mural, too. You may need to tape the paper to the table so it doesn't slide around while the children work.

An elaborate form of this craft idea that adults often make is a quilt around a theme. Each person in the group creates a quilt square to represent some aspect of what the group stands for. These quilt squares can be colored with fabric pens or crafted of patchwork or applique. Again, the craft idea is to build group solidarity and not to highlight one artist's skills over another. When the quilt top is completed, it can be a group project to tie it or quilt it. It can be hung in a special central location or given to an appreciated leader or member.

Handicraft Gift Idea: Make an Apron

By Charles and Kim Petty

If you are looking for a handicraft gift idea to make for someone special, perhaps that person would like an apron. When we think of aprons, we often think of mothers and grandmothers in the kitchen, but men can often benefit from having an apron as well. They often enjoy barbecuing, for one thing. They also can use an apron in the workshop. Children, too, can use an apron for many of their activities, such as arts and crafts. Here are simple instructions for making a handicraft gift of an apron that can be adapted for anyone.

Start with a piece of sturdy fabric suitable for the individual for whom you are making the handicraft gift. The fabric needs to be wide enough to wrap 1/2 to 3/4 of the way around them and long enough to cover them from collar bone to just above the knee. For a large adult, 25 to 30 inches wide by 36 to 40 inches long should be about right. A slimmer adult can use a narrower apron, but if they will be wiping their hands on the sides of it, they might appreciate the extra width. An apron for a child of 10 could start with a piece of fabric about 18 inches wide by 25-30 inches long.

The best types of fabric to use are sturdy cottons, such as medium weight denim or twill. Soft cottons such as broadcloth or muslin are all right in the kitchen, but will not last long, and would not hold up in the garden or workshop at all. Other materials you'll need are thread and a sewing machine. You will also need enough extra fabric to make a strap to go around the neck, ties for the back, and pockets.

When designing the handicraft gift, you can be as creative as you like with pockets. Every apron is more useful with pockets. A person who cleans houses, for instance, can use pockets for odds and ends they pick up as well as for their spray bottles, sponges, and scrub brushes.

To make the apron, fold the piece of fabric lengthwise. This will allow you to cut the shape with one cut, making the two sides symmetrical. What you will be shaping when you make the cut will be the bib section of the apron. The bib for an adult sized apron will need to be about 9 inches wide. Measure from the fold about 5-1/2 inches. This is half the width of the bib plus an inch to fold under twice to form a hem. The piece you will cut off the side to shape the bib will be a half bullet shape with the tip of the bullet being where the ties will be attached. The length of the half bullet shape should be about a foot, and the width will be from the spot you marked 5-1/2 inches from the fold to the outside edge of the fabric. When these pieces are cut off, the result should be an apron shaped piece of fabric.

Now decorate the apron with pockets and any other decorations you desire. After this it is time to fold under the edges all around and stitch down with sturdy stitching for a nice hem all around the handicraft gift. Cut two pieces of fabric a yard long by two inches wide. Fold lengthwise and fold raw edges to the inside. Press and stitch down along the length to make the ties. Attach the ties at the waist of the apron handicraft gift. (If these ties seem a little long, it is because a lot of people like to bring the ties to the front and tie them there.) Cut another piece of fabric 18 to 20 inches long by 5 inches wide fold in half lengthwise and press. Press again with the raw edges of the long side tucked under 1/2 inch. Stitch down the open side. Attach this piece to the sides of the top of the bib, sewing it to the back of the bib and topstitching on the front side of the bib. Be careful not to twist it when you attach it.

People who work hard at homemaking, barbecuing and in the workshop will appreciate a handicraft gift of a sturdy apron. Mostly they will appreciate the effort and design you have put into making a handicraft gift that they can use.

Christmas Craft: Bead and Pipe Cleaner Ornaments

By Charles and Kim Petty

Christmas ornaments made from ordinary pipe cleaners and inexpensive acrylic beads are very pretty and easy to make. They look quite impressive yet are easy enough for small children to make. This is one Christmas craft idea to use again and again. Older people will enjoy making this Christmas craft, too, which can be varied to make a number of different sparkling ornaments for your Christmas tree.

To make the bead and pipe cleaner ornaments, you need common pipe cleaners in desired colors and acrylic beads. Two types of beads are particularly effective when strung on pipe cleaners. One type are called sunburst beads, but are also known as paddlewheel beads, snowflake beads, or starburst beads. These beads have six faceted paddles spaced equally around a center that contains the hole for stringing. When several of these sunburst beads are strung consecutively, they fit against each other in an interlocking pattern.

The other type of bead that is also effective for this Christmas craft is called the tri bead or propeller bead. It has three rounded bumps arranged around the stringing hole. Like the sunburst beads, the tri beads interlock when strung consecutively. For the most sparkly and attractive Christmas ornaments, get tri beads and/or sunburst beads in translucent colors of red, green, and clear. The tri beads can also be found in metallic gold and silver which can be used in this Christmas craft as well.

Pipe cleaners can be found in silver and gold tinsel as well as chenille of all colors. For the Christmas craft, the best colors to use are the metallics and Christmas colors. The beads cover the pipe cleaners, but the ends will need to be twisted together and made into hangers, so they show.

Anyone, even small children, can string these beads on pipe cleaners. Bend up the end of the pipe cleaner so the beads don't fall off. The pipe cleaner works like a needle, making a needle unnecessary. For best results, show the children how to alternate colors when stringing, or start a pattern of three colors. When the beads are strung on the pipe cleaners, they can be bent into different Christmas shapes. For instance, string red and clear beads alternately, then bend down one end of the pipe cleaner for a candy cane shape. Or alternate red and green beads and form a circle for a wreath. Use red pipe cleaner to form a small bow to decorate the wreath. Form a hanger for the Christmas craft or simply slip the circle over a branch of the tree.

If you experiment with clear beads and silver pipe cleaners, you can make some beautiful snowflake or star ornaments. Snowflake designs can be twisted of silver pipe cleaner only, without the beads for a simple but pretty decoration.

Bead and pipe cleaner ornaments are a Christmas craft you will find yourself using every year. Children and their parents will both appreciate this simple yet pretty Christmas craft.

Cruise Holiday Tips for Smooth Sailing

By Charles and Kim Petty

Is anything more luxurious than taking a cruise holiday? Traveling to exotic locations on a luxury ship, catching sunrays, and breathing the salty breezes can renew and replenish anyone, no matter how shopworn from the cares of work. However, a cruise holiday requires planning in order to be the best it can be. Check out these tips to have a cruise experience you will remember.

So where do you start when planning a cruise holiday? First, what is your budget like? Do you need to hold down expenses? Then here are a few tips for economizing on your cruise holiday.

When scheduling your cruise holiday, you should be aware that there are off season and on season dates, and that you want to schedule your trip in the off season to get the best deal. What you may not know, however, is that cruise lines actually change prices a number of times throughout the year. Ask and find out when their absolute lowest season prices are. In addition, keep your plans somewhat flexible so that you can change ships at the last minute. Sometimes a ship is not filled to capacity, so the cruise line will sell the last few tickets at a real bargain. It is always to their advantage to sail filled to capacity because people on holiday spend money on souvenirs, drinks, etc. Use this knowledge to get a really great deal.

Where you cruise to on your holiday can make a big difference in your cost as well. If you pick a popular spot, you can travel cheaper than if you choose a less popular spot. Another consideration is whether you really care about those ports of call. If you just want to stay on the ocean liner and enjoy the luxuries, book a cruise that doesn't stop anywhere. These "cruises to nowhere" are just as luxurious as the others but cost less.

To be safe on a cruise holiday, don't take a lot of expensive equipment or jewelry with you. Make sure your passport, health insurance, and other papers are up to date. Be sure to ask about laws you may inadvertently be breaking when you get off the shore you are accustomed to. Laws in ports and even in the water can vary, and you sure don't want a big hassle with a foreign law enforcement agency.

To travel lighter, find out about equipment that will be available on the ship. For instance, if the cruise line provides irons or hair dryers, you won't need to pack yours. Also pack your own sample size shampoo, toothpaste, and other toiletries because these items will cost more in the gift shop. You should have access to laundry facilities on your cruise holiday, so you don't have to take a huge amount of clothing. Pick a wrinkle proof lightweight outfit for every two or three days and pick separates in colors that coordinate so you can get different looks. Be sure to pack a formal and or semi-formal outfit if you will be taking part in these sort of activities on your cruise holiday.

A Wealth of Kid Hobby Ideas

By Charles and Kim Petty

Every young person needs a hobby. An interesting kid hobby will help children learn as well as keep them entertained for hours. It might even help them stay away from a bad peer group and stay out of trouble. Some kids might think of video games or TV as an appropriate kid hobby, but most parents would like to see their kids doing something more challenging or educational.

A good kid hobby is playing a musical instrument. The guitar can often be self-taught from a book if a child has the interest, but for piano playing or other instruments, you will probably have to invest in lessons. Practice is, of course, an essential part of mastering any musical instrument.

Another type of kid hobby is pursuing an art or a craft. Kids can learn to draw, paint, or make scrapbook pages. They can learn needle arts, such as embroidery, sewing, knitting or crocheting. Beginning carpentry is a very useful kid hobby that may turn into a career, or at least skills that will be used for a lifetime. Tinkering around on gas engines or electronics is another kid hobby that can lead to useful skills.

There are all sorts of things that kids might like to collect for a hobby. Some of the more common collections are of stamps, coins, and rocks. Stamps are interesting because they can be from many different countries, becoming a geography lesson. Coins and stamps both are of historical significance, and encourage reading to learn more about different eras in history. Rock collecting as a kid hobby requires looking into science books.

Other collectibles include bean bag toys or figurines of a certain thing, such as owls, frogs, or unicorns. Anything a child has an interest in can be collected. If a kid is interested in dolphins, for instance, she may not only collect dolphin figurines and posters, but also be motivated to read books about dolphins.

Construction sets also make a good pastime for kids. Many people may think of these only as toys, but children who have grown up with these sets and added components to them down through the years can create some pretty impressive models. They are also gaining skills in reasoning and perception as they build.

Making model, such as cars, boats, and airplanes, has always been a popular kid hobby. If your child is interested in making models, be very encouraging in the beginning. Model car kits can be very complicated and require a great deal of precision. If your child's first few creations leave a little bit to be desired, don't laugh or scold, or he is likely to never want to try to make anything again! Get the easiest kit he is willing to make and then patiently help him as much as needed.

Many kids enjoy sports, making any athletic activity a great kid hobby. Soccer, basketball, and little league baseball all come to mind, but don't forget about track and field events. Maybe your child would enjoy distance running or gymnastics. An active kid hobby will help your child stay in shape as well as make an interesting pastime.

Get a Hobby Kit and Learn Something New

By Charles and Kim Petty

If you are tired of the ho-hum of life and would like to branch out a little, maybe you should get a hobby kit. Many different hobbies have kits that can help a beginner learn about the hobby quickly and easily. It is not easy to teach yourself some hobbies, but with a hobby kit, you can learn from the kit.

For instance, if you have been wanting to learn how to do a needlecraft, such as cross stitch or crewel embroidery, there is no better way to start than with a kit. In a hobby kit, you will receive a piece of cloth with the design already stamped on, yarn or floss in the proper colors and possibly already cut to the proper lengths, and a needle. You may even get an embroidery hoop in the kit. When you buy a hobby kit, be sure to read on the package to see if any other materials or tools will be needed to do the hobby.

A hobby kit is also the best way to learn a hobby like building model cars. In a model car kit, you will get all the pieces you need and detailed instructions. In some kits, you might also receive paint, a brush, and glue, but read the label. You might have to provide these things separately.

When choosing Christmas or birthday gifts for a young person, consider a hobby kit, such as a candle-making kit or a rock tumbling kit. In the fall, the stores are full of kits that could start a kid on a hobby that would last throughout his life. You can find small weaving loom kits, glycerine soap making kits, bead craft kits, wood-burning kits, and art kits. There is a line of colorful books put out by the Klutz company that each gives instruction in a hobby and has a packet of materials for learning the hobby. Some of the topics Klutz books cover are polymer clay modeling, hair styling, and pompon creations. They are all cleverly written and lots of fun.

Another hobby that can be learned from a kit is starting garden seedlings, especially herbs. A seed starting kit typically contains a pot, a small trowel, seeds, fertilizer, and a greenhouse dome or cover. Potting soil may need to be purchased separately.

When choosing a hobby kit, be careful to get one that is appropriate for the recipient. Sometimes a hobby kit is quite challenging. An example of a difficult project is an electronics kit for wiring one's own radio. If a kit is a gift for a child and it is too hard, it will wind up gathering dust on some shelf. In fact, it might gather dust even if you buy it for yourself! Consider getting a smaller project that you can finish in a short time so you can get a feel for the hobby. The next hobby kit you buy can be harder if you find that you enjoy the hobby and have a real desire to learn more about it.

Holiday Crafts: Thanksgiving Decorations Kids Can Make

By Charles and Kim Petty

Thanksgiving is a wonderful holiday! What a spiritual renewal to take a day to reflect over the past year about just how good God has been to you and your family, to give you harvest and shelter, health and hope. To get the most out of this joyous occasion, make some holiday crafts with your children. These days, Thanksgiving often gets squeezed out by Hallowe'en's spooky decorations and the lights and gala of Christmas. With the following holiday crafts, your home can be decorated for this quieter but important celebration.

Turkeys are a natural choice for decorations. A familiar project at this time of year is for a child to trace around her hand and make the resulting drawing into a turkey. The thumb is the head and the fingers are the tail feathers all displayed. While many of the turkeys that are raised for food are now the domestic white variety, the turkeys eaten by the Pilgrims at the first Thanksgiving were the wild brown ones. The tail feathers on a wild turkey are brown, but they are iridescent. catching light and appearing to be multi-colored. This is why children color the tail feathers in bright colors.

The turkey's head has a wattle under the beak. This is a vertical flap of loose skin that is red colored. Be sure to draw this in order to make the hand turkey look like a turkey. Add skinny legs and bird feet. When done, the children can cut out the turkeys and hang them on the wall. It's really cute to make a whole flock of these turkeys in the sizes of all the hands in the family. The little hand shapes are particularly sweet.

Another nice turkey decoration to make when making Thanksgiving holiday crafts is a turkey door decoration. Make a brown construction paper body and head of a turkey. Now make a large number of colored feather shapes. Each family member writes on a feather something he or she is thankful for before attaching as part of the turkey's tail. Repeat until all the feathers are used, and hang the turkey on the front door to greet visitors with a message of gratitude. Make a sign to accompany the turkey that says "Give thanks to the Lord for He is good!" or simply "Be thankful!" or "We're thankful for you!" or whatever you like.

Children love making construction paper chains. To further decorate the house for Thanksgiving, let them make a paper chain in fall colors as one of their holiday crafts. Using 9 by 12 inch construction paper, cut the paper in half across the long side and cut the halves into one inch thick six inch long strips. Use a stapler to attach the ends of the strip into a circle. Loop the next strip into the circle and staple it. Continue the process alternating colors of brown, red, yellow, and orange. When the chains are long, you can drap them along the ceiling or stair rail. If you don't make the door turkey, the children can write something they're thankful for on each strip of paper before adding it to the chain.

Thanksgiving is too nice a holiday to let the other more commercial holidays crowd it out. By making holiday crafts to decorate the home for Thanksgiving, you can keep this day special, too. The extended family, aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc., will be pleased to see the holiday crafts the young ones have made to decorate the house and make it cheerful for their visit.

Start an Art Collectible Hobby and Beautify Your Home

By Charles and Kim Petty

Collecting is a fun hobby, and one of the most interesting things to collect are art collectibles. Many different items can be painted with artwork and become an art collectible. Hobby enthusiasts collect such things as saw blades, and wooden eggs which have had artwork painted on. People even collect designer rugs as art. Another art collectible hobby is collecting limited edition plates, thimbles, Christmas ornaments, and figurines produced by such companies as Bradford Exchange. And of course, many people collect fine art paintings.

The person with an art collectible hobby will probably find his or her own favorite artists whose works they appreciate. They can choose to focus on one particular artist, either past or present, or they can choose from the works of many artists. On the other hand, they may collect art and art objects around a theme they enjoy, such as cigars, wild animals, or piano music.

One may think of an art collector as a rich person who has the money to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on an original Van Gogh. A person of more modest means can collect art too, however. Post cards are a good place to start. Most art museum gift shops offer high quality, glossy postcards printed with some of their more notable acquisitions. By buying those cards one really appreciates, anyone can have an art collection.

Returning to the Simple Joys of Home and Hobby

By Charles and Kim Petty

In the past decades, many mothers have made the decision to pursue careers, but that trend seems to be changing. Home and hobby are calling to these women, who are willing to make financial and personal sacrifices in order to be the primary caregivers for their small children. Many women have returned to being keepers at home, and hobby skills can help them meet the financial challenges of being a one income family.

One hobby that helps the mother at home is cooking. Though it could be considered work, cooking and baking are fascinating hobbies. One can explore the cuisine of different countries or learn to create gourmet treats. Baking can yield wholesome whole grain products that nourish the family for a fraction of the cost of loaves bought at the store.

Another home and hobby skill that comes in handy is sewing on a sewing machine. Many homemakers are producing quilts that are works of art. These beautiful offerings can be made inexpensively by recycling unwanted fabrics into squares and other shapes and artistically arranging the pieces. Other sewing skills that are useful for the stay-at-home-mom are mending, altering, and creating clothing. When polled about favorite pastimes, women often rank sewing at the top.

Some moms and their husbands actively work on remodeling their home, and hobby carpentry skills come in handy. One income families hold down the cost of living by learning to "do it yourself," a term that is used so much it has been shortened into "diy." The Internet has made it possible to find information on making all sorts of repairs and renovations to homes, furnishings and other belongings.

Gardening is a hobby that not only gets the participant close to nature, but also can put high quality produce on the family table. Some families are even investing in hobby greenhouses or growing enough extra to sell a bit each week at farmers' markets. A good practical hobby like growing a garden gives a person a sense of accomplishment when they realize their efforts have created something useful and profitable.

The homemaking parent that has a sense of art can inexpensively create harmony and beauty around the house, raising everyone's standard of living. It doesn't have to involve spending any money. Perhaps she can arrange dried wild flowers beautifully or create simple hand-lettered wall mottoes that lift everyone's spirits.

Yes, home and hobby call to the women of today, suggesting a simpler way of life closer to those people and things that matter most. While the career women are truly making an important impact on today's world, the quiet return of many to home and hobby may result in more impact than any of us realizes.

Island Holidays: Salt Spray Getaways

By Charles and Kim Petty

There is just something about the ocean breeze and salt spray that makes a holiday on an island something you won't soon forget. Because islands can be found in every ocean and near every continent, island holidays can vary widely. You can lay on a beach or watch whales, study botany or shop native craft stalls. It's all up to you when you plan your island holidays.

North American islands include the Canadian east coast islands of Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland. Island holidays to these areas will be filled with unspoiled natural beauty, cool, comfortable temperatures, and whale watching expeditions.

South of these regions is the little island of Bermuda off the eastern U.S. coast. Bermuda is surrounded with hundreds of square miles of reef formations, making snorkeling an interesting activity there. For the less adventurous, you can ride around in a glass bottom boat and view the beautiful undersea world.

Heading on south, we find the Carribean islands. These have long been popular spots for tourists. Here the beaches are white and sandy and the weather is very warm. Up in the interior of these islands, you can find a wide variety of birds and other wildlife. Cayman Islands, Jamaica, Barbados, the Virgin Islands, and many other spots make lovely island holidays. Each island has it's own unique flavor and feel.

Europe has islands of all types nearby which make great spots for island holidays. Visit the isles of Greece and you will see clear seas, quiet beaches, olive groves, and the simple life. Corfu is the choice of those who like up-to-date restaurants and shopping, while Lefkas is popular with wind-surfers and sailors. The Portuguese island of Madeira boasts beautiful weather and one of the lowest crime rates in the world. The Canary Islands, off the coast of Spain, are a popular tourist spot for Europeans.

A new trend in island holidays is eco-tourism. This is traveling in such a way that neither the earth nor the local people you are visiting is harmed in any way. People who are drawn to eco-tourism may enjoy bird-watching, hiking, and other island activities that do not leave an impact on the area.

Everybody dreams of taking island holidays. There are islands all over the world, each offering it's own cultural experience and natural wonders. Many spots for island holidays are still unspoiled and secluded, while others are lively and exciting. Island holidays offer a real diversion from your everyday life.

Creative Handicraft: Potholder from Scrap Fabrics

By Charles and Kim Petty

If you need a gift for a special person, or just need some time to unwind, make a creative handicraft. Crafting is therapeutic when you are feeling stressed, and it also can yield a useful or decorative item. Everyone has some measure of creativity, and with modern kits and patterns, a creative handicraft does not have to end in frustration.

If you have a sewing machine, you can learn to make a creative handicraft that will be a useful and welcome gift. Potholders are a great beginning sewing project that can be made from scrap material or unwanted clothing and a bit of double-fold bias tape. Here are the simple instructions for this creative handicraft.

First cut two 8-inch (21 cm.) squares of fabric to be the front and back of the potholder. Choose coordinating fabrics that match your kitchen for these pieces. To make it easier, you can make an 8-inch square pattern from a piece of cardboard to use as a pattern. Cut more 8-inch squares of any old fabric to stack for the filling. You want the stack of fabric squares to be thick enough to protect you from a hot pot, but thin enough to be flexible and able to be sewn through.

Stack all layers so that the outer layers are facing to the outside and the filler layers are inside. You can put a couple of large straight pins through all layers to keep them together. Now sew right across the middle of the stack. Sew across the middle again, perpendicular to the first stitching. You will have divided the square into 4 squares. Sew across the stack again from corner to corner, and again from the other corner to corner. The layers should be joined and sturdy now.

To bind off the raw edges of your creative handicraft, trim with scissors so that all the layers are again even at the edges. Open out one folded edge of the bias tape. The wider bias tape might seem to be easier to use, but the narrow type makes a neater finished product. Starting at one corner, line up the edges of the tape with the edges of the potholder, and start stitching through all layers along the first fold line, which will be about 1/4 inch from the edge. Stitch neatly and slowly, attaching the opened tape all around the edge until you reach the beginning corner. Cut the bias tape off, leaving 3 inches, (7 cm.) to make into a hanging loop.

Fold the bias tape over the raw edge so that the middle fold lines up with the outside of the potholder and the other fold is hiding the raw edge of the bias tape. Now, for best results, hand sew the binding down, forming a loop on your creative handicraft when you get to the end.

This potholder is just one example of a creative handicraft you can create if you have a sewing machine. When it is finished, you will have a useful item made from all recycled materials. Feel free to give this creative handicraft away or keep it for yourself.

Family Holidays: Tips for Peace and Harmony

By Charles and Kim Petty

What do you like to do on family holidays? Go to the beach or spend a week in the country? Maybe you like camping or visiting relatives. Whatever you enjoy, family holidays are a chance for everyone in the family to get reacquainted and spend quality time together. It's a chance for parents to really talk with their teens and find out what's going on in their lives. It's important to keep the communication lines open, and a family holiday is a good time to do that. Having a good relationship with their parents is one of the most important factors in keeping teens out of trouble.

Studies have shown that when families take holidays together, they are more likely to eat together and are less likely to argue. They do not watch as much television because they are involved in doing things together. Kids even report that their parents seem to act differently while on holiday.

While family holidays are a good time to connect with your kids, communication problems that are already there will not automatically disappear. Especially with teenagers it is important to listen and be flexible. Find out what the kids would like to do and eat and plan accordingly. While even teenagers need boundaries, it is important for parents to try to avoid needless confrontation. Explain why you make the decisions you do and show them positive attention.

Kids will appreciate being included in travel plans. There's a good chance they will choose a theme park or the beach if those are among the options. Sometimes it works well for a teenager to take a special friend along on family holidays. While this might increase the parents' load, the teen is likely to really appreciate it. Also, sometimes it works well for kids to go on holidays with their grandparents instead of their parents. Sometimes there is a special relationship here that can help kids open up and communicate about their concerns.

While on family holidays, if teens are uncooperative or behave improperly, try to deal with the problem in private. Teens are very aware of embarrassmant and it is needlessly mean to exploit this sensitivity. In fact, you might explain to the kids how their behavior embarrasses you, and they in turn might work harder at getting along and acting appropriately.

Kids will be happier on family vacations if they have snacks, drinks, and entertainment. Few kids enjoy a long ride in the car! Try to provide individual CD players or hand-held video games, and don't forget to take plenty of bathroom stops. Sometimes kids enjoy the ride more if they can help you follow the map. This is an educational activity for them as well. By following these suggestions, your family holidays can make a happy memory.

Arts and Crafts Idea: Foam Sheet Glasses Case

By Charles and Kim Petty

Are you a camp director, teacher, or homeschool mom looking for a new arts and crafts idea for your kids? Or maybe you are a recreation director at a senior center or nursing home and could use a new project. Either way, this arts and crafts idea will be interesting and fun for all. This glass case can be used, given as a gift, or converted into a necklace purse.

To make the glasses case, you will need the following simple materials: a square of craft foam, plastic or large blunt needles, lanyard lace or thick yarn. Cut two rectangles from the foam, each 3-1/2 inches (9 cm.) by 6 inches (15 cm.). With a hole punch, make holes on three sides of each rectangle, leaving one short side unpunched. Make the holes 1/2 inch apart and allow at least 1/4 inch between the hole and the edge of the craft foam. The holes need to line up so that the two pieces can be laced together. If you are preparing the craft for small children, you should make the holes yourself. Otherwise, the crafters can do this step if you have enough pairs of hole punches.

At this point the crafters can cut decorative shapes from other colors of craft foam, or you can buy sets of ready-cut foam shapes. If you are doing the craft at a special event, like vacation Bible school, choose shapes that echo the theme of the event. For instance, if the Bible school or camp has a cowboy theme, find shapes that fit well, such as boots, cowboy hats, and stars. Let the kids choose the shapes they like and glue on as desired. You might also like to provide beads or sequins to glue on as well, especially if the crafters are a little older.

The next step in this arts and crafts idea is to thread the plastic needle with the yarn or lanyard lace. Yarn might be a little easier to handle, but lanyard lace is shiny and attractive. In a pinch, some teachers of small children use a bobby pin as a needle. It is certainly a safe alternative. Simply loop the yarn through the opening and use the open end of the bobby pin as if it were the point of the needle. The children can now begin to lace the front and back of the glasses case together.

To turn this arts and crafts idea into a necklace purse, simply attach a piece of lanyard lace to each corner making a long handle. Kids will enjoy using this case as a place to store secret notes and small objects. If they'd rather, they can give the glasses case to a parent, grandparent, or friend who wears glasses. Either way, this arts and crafts idea will be interesting for all.

Golf Holidays to Get Away From It All

By Charles and Kim Petty

If you have been working too hard for too long and just need to get away and play some golf, you will want to check out golf holidays package vacations from your travel agent. These travel arrangements are often referred to as "stay and play" plans because you stay at a certain hotel and receive rights to play at a certain golf course while you are there. When making these arrangements, make sure there are not special requirements that will make playing inconvenient or impossible for you. Some of these plans require you to limit your arrival dates and departure dates or have other unacceptable limits so read the fine print.

You can take golf holidays to all sorts of locations depending on your personality and desires. For instance, you can choose to golf in a course located near or in a major city, taking in museums or theatres when not golfing. Or you might choose to visit a golf course in an area of rugged natural beauty such as the mountains. While there, you might take a day to fish instead of golf. Whatever your needs, you can find golf holidays packages to meet your needs.

Are you going to take your own golf clubs with you when you travel on golf holidays? You probably would prefer to use them rather than the clubs that can be rented at the course to which you are travelling. If you choose to take them with you, you will need to think about the arrangements a bit. For instance, do you have a really high quality golf club bag which will protect those expensive golf clubs. If not, you'd better get one. You won't be able to carry your clubs on if you are flying, so you'll need a bag that can take airport luggage handling and still protect your clubs. So get a good one.

When picking a destination for golf holidays, pick the course you wish to play on first, and then find out about lodging at hotels, resorts, or stay and play package plans. Make sure the tee times that are set for you when choosing a stay and play package are going to work for you. People who are staying at a golf course's own resort generally get first serve when choosing tee times. If it's really important to you to get the tee time you desire, it may be worth it to you to stay at the resort instead of a less expensive hotel. Either way, you are sure to find refreshment and restoration when taking golf holidays.

Civil War Bullet Collecting: A Hobby that Honors the Past

By Charles and Kim Petty

Did you know that during the Civil War, more than 1000 different types of bullets were used? This is one reason Civil War bullet collecting has become a popular hobby. Another reason is that the time of the Civil War saw changes taking place in the development of firearms and ammunition. The old round musketballs of the Revolution were being replaced with bullets in the shape we are accustomed to. While musketballs are found on Civil War battlefields, the most common type of bullet used was the .58-caliber bullet with three rings around the base. Many bullets found are splattered out of shape. If you've always been fascinated by the Civil War and firearms, Civil War bullet collecting is a hobby you will enjoy.

With the advent of Internet buying and selling, Civil War bullets have become more collectible, and the prices have gone up quickly. Not only this, sometimes sellers are not informed and ask more than the bullet is worth. For these reasons, if you are just starting out in Civil War bullet collecting, you will want to buy a good price guide. You can even find a price guide online if that works better for you.

Many Civil War bullet collectors also collect bullet molds and other relics from the Civil War era. A real enthusiast might even investigate the possiblility of becoming a Civil War reenactor, acting out battles with others in towns and fields across the Southeast.

Civil War bullets can be collected by buying from other collectors, or you can begin by going directly to the battlefields to dig and search. A metal detector will make Civil War bullet collecting easier. You may also find buttons from uniforms, bullet molds, belt buckles, and other metal items from the battle. Some of the bullets may be buried quite deep. You will need to wear a headset and pay close attention to the changes in tone in your metal detector. Hunting Civil War relics is prohibited on protected battlefields, but there are still old homesites where battles were fought. Be sure to get permission from the owner and fill any holes you dig.

Some people have the idea that hunting for bullets with a metal detector indicates a lack of respect for the soldiers who died there. They get this idea because sometimes bullet hunters find bones along with the bullet. The fact is, however, that many of the bullet hunters who have found bullets this way have chronicled and mapped out there finds, resulting in many of the facts that we now know about the Civil War.

The Civil War fascinates Americans because of everything it stands for. While everyone agrees that slavery is a terrible blot on the history of the U.S., there are some people who still discuss the issue of states' rights versus a strong central government. Civil War bullet collecting is an iteresting hobby, though somewhat sobering at times when considering the great number of casualties. The memory of brother fighting against brother out in the cornfields and pastures will never go away. Civil War bullet collecting is one way to commemorate this monumental historical event.

Clay Pot Crafts: Make a Bell for the Porch

By Charles and Kim Petty

Clay pot crafts are a cute way to make home decorations. In clay pot crafts, clay flower pots can be crafted into a variety of decorative things that appeal to gardeners. Usually, the crafter begins with new pots. The pots are often decorated with paint as well as being tied together with rope or cord to create things.

Pots for clay pot crafts can be purchased in many different sizes, from tiny ones not more than 2 inches in diameter, to huge ones over a foot across. For a beginning project, start with smaller pots. The beginner should also choose clay pot crafts that don't use too many pots in too elaborate a design.

An example of a good craft for someone new at clay pot crafts is to make a bell from two clay pots. Buy one pot that is about five or six inches in diameter, and another that is very small. You will use the small one as the clapper for the bell. You will also need some decorative cord, two large wooden beads, and paint in desired colors. You may also wish to purchase some glue-on jewels to decorate the bell. The bell makes a nice decoration for a front porch.

Cut the cord two feet (60 cm.) long. Fold the end over 3 inches (8 cm.) and tie in an overhand knot, making a loop. This loop is for hanging the bell from a hook or a nail. Now turn the larger clay pot upside-down. Pass the loose end of the cord down through the hole in the pot. Lay the pot on its side and slide one of the large wooden beads up the cord until it is about 10 inches (25 cm.) from the loose end. Now tie the cord around the bead so that the bead cannot slip from its position on the cord. If you have done this correctly, you can lift the pot by the loop. In clay pot crafts, the beads must be large enough to stop the cord from going through the hole in the bottom of the pot.

On the loose end of the cord, you are going to attach the small pot in the same way. Slide the small pot up the cord to make it easier to tie the other large wooden bead on the end of the cord. Now when you lift the entire arrangement by the loop, the smaller pot should hang freely inside the larger pot, making a pleasant sound when it claps against the larger pot.

Decorate the outside of the larger pot with paint as desired. You may like to paint it in black and white patches for a Holstein cow theme. You may also like to decorate the top of the bell with silk or dried flowers and greenery and a ribbon bow.

For a variation on this craft, make three of the bells and hang them from a horizontal piece of driftwood or other interesting piece of natural wood. When making hanging clay pot crafts, always make sure the beads are large enough and are tied tightly in place, because the clay pots will break if they fall to the ground.

Other clay pot crafts include making a large doll or scarecrow of nested pots strung together and painted. The doll can sit on a chair or a step of the front porch. Paint his face to look like a scarecrow, a jack-o-lantern, a gnome, or a child. Clay pot crafts are especially suited to being displayed outside.

A Hobby Greenhouse Will Get You Growing!

By Charles and Kim Petty

For people who would like to do more gardening but live in a short growing season area, a hobby greenhouse is the answer. A hobby greenhouse is not large enough to produce vegetables or flowers on a commercial basis. It will, however, give you a place for a tomato plant or two and some fresh greens even if you live in the northern regions. Greenhouse enthusiasts even have their own association, called the Hobby Greenhouse Association, which publishes a quarterly magazine. The organization also sponsers events and helps individuals connect to get help with the aspect of gardening that they are interested in, whether it's growing cacti or saving seeds.

If you are in the market for a hobby greenhouse, there are several types on the market. The smallest type is not large enough to walk into and must be accessed from the outside. It resembles an old-fashioned phone booth made all of glass and outfitted with shelves. This type is designed to fit as many plants as possible in as small a place as possible. The shelves are made of glass to allow as much light as possible to reach plants on the lower shelves. Another inexpensive version of this sort of hobby greenhouse is shelving covered with a zippered tent of clear plastic. This sort of arrangement is great for the small-scale hobby gardener wanting a place to keep her flowers or houseplant starts.

There are a variety of designs of hobby greenhouse that are large enough to walk into but made entirely of clear glass or plastic. They are often about the same size as a small storage building. Some independent builders have started making these to sell locally. Among national brands, one of the nicest is called the "Solar Prism." It is called this because of it's unique construction. This hobby greenhouse is made of a single piece of durable clear plastic which is designed to work like tiny prisms side by side. They trap the rays of the sun and shoot them back into the greenhouse at all angles. For this reason, these little greenhouses are said to glow when the weather is cloudy.

Better hobby greenhouses are equipped with automatic sensors that open vents which allow ventilation and keep the interior temperatures from getting too high. These are a great labor saver, but can get expensive. Another benefit sometimes found in nicer greenhouses is a built in irrigation or misting system. Members of the Hobby Greenhouse Association, or HGA, have invented many interesting designs of greenhouses.

If gardening is your hobby, greenhouse growing will interest you. With a greenhouse, you can have the earliest tomatoes and salad greens all year. You can also start seedlings for the main garden early in the spring when outdoor temperatures would kill them. A hobby greenhouse can be a good investment.

Bust Boredom with Kid Crafts

By Charles and Kim Petty

Have you ever heard those familiar words, "I'm bored," coming from the mouth of your child? If so, then kid crafts are the answer. Provide the kids with craft materials and boredom will be a thing of the past. Read on for ideas about kid crafts.

Kid crafts essential materials include paper, crayons, safe scissors, and glue. Paper for kid crafts can include construction paper, plain typing paper, cardstock of various colors, and many other options. Even junk mail and old magazines can make interesting art projects. Crayons are nice for younger children, but the stores are now filled with other options, such as washable dry-erase markers, watercolor pencils, and gel pens. Kid crafts supplies can run into money, but even on a budget there are many possibilities.

Other materials kids can craft with include recycled junk and found objects. By recycled junk, I'm referring to empty cereal boxes, toothpaste boxes, cardboard from packaging, plastic containers, and even tin cans. If you let kids craft with tin cans, however, you need to make sure the open edge of the can doesn't have any sharp edges. Simply file these off or squeeze them flat with a pair of pliers.

Found objects include leaves, twigs, rocks, snakeskins, and other natural item a child might find. Perhaps there is a sheep farm nearby. If so, wool scraps can often be found stuck to the barbed wire fences. Any or all of these items can be used in kid crafts.

One of the most fun and popular kid crafts is making a collage. Kids can glue anything down when making a collage. Use heavy paper for the background, and then let the creativity begin! For an extra challenge, a collage can be built around a theme, like food, animals, or babies. Old magazines can be searched for just the right pictures, which can be cut out and glued to the background. The older child might wish to cut out details from magazine pictures and reassemble them in new and interesting ways. They might cut out interesting words and headlines and add them as well.

Younger kid crafts can include collages made of glued down pasta, beans, popsicle sticks, leaves, and many other materials. Don't forget about glitter, too. If the budget allows only a few kid crafts splurges, remember that kids of all ages, particularly girls, really enjoy crafting artwork that includes glitter. But whether your kids are boys or girls, young or older, suggest some kid crafts the next time your kids are bored!

If You're Collecting, Ebay Selling is for You!

By Charles and Kim Petty

If you or someone you know is interested in collecting, Ebay selling is something you need to get familiar with! Ebay is a huge Internet site that allows people to sell or buy at auction almost anything you can think of. There are very few restrictions on what you can buy or sell. Are you fond of antique toasters? Bicycles? Vintage rhinestone jewelry? Stuffed toys? Elvis memorabilia? Whatever you are collecting, Ebay selling will probably have what you want.

Ebay is essential to know about if you are enthusiastic about your collecting. For instance, if you collect a particular type of antique or vintage dishes, such as Fiesta, you can search Ebay for exactly the piece you need to complete your set. In addition to finding the exact item you are looking for, there is a possibility you'll get it for a great price as well. That tangerine colored pitcher might be yours for a song. You just have to look.

Collecting is one thing, but what about when the collector gets more items than he or she can store? What if they inadvertently collected duplicates of the same item. Or what if you just have stuff you don't want anymore? That's where Ebay selling can help. You can list your item on Ebay, and another collector can find it and make a bid. Ebay is a great way to recycle unwanted used items and make a few dollars as well as helping you with your collecting. Ebay selling is not hard to learn, either.

For just about every item you can name, someone somewhere collects it, and they are probably searching Ebay for what they want. So whatever you are collecting, Ebay selling can help you generate the money needed to add items to your own collection while getting rid of things you don't need. In addition, you can be gratified to know that the item you didn't want, like the bikes your kids have outgrown, or your vintage clock, was exactly what some other collector was seeking.

Just like collecting, Ebay selling can get almost addictive. It's a fun hobby that many people are discovering. So where do you go if there's something special you are collecting? Ebay! Selling, you'll find, is almost as fun as collecting, so be sure to try it, too. Remember, too, that Ebay can not only help you complete your collections. It can also be a source for the things you need for other hobbies, interests, and needs in your life.

How to Come up With a Craft Idea for Kid Programs

By Charles and Kim Petty

Are you a camp director or Sunday School teacher looking for a craft idea for kid enrichment? Maybe you feel like you are just not the creative type, and you struggle with coming up with craft projects. It is true that some people just have a knack for finding or even inventing craft ideas, but your creativity can be improved. There are ways to make it easier to find a craft idea for kid needs.

First, lay aside any perfectionism. Locking yourself into thinking there is only one right way to do something makes every decision harder. Regardless of the kid program you are helping with, there are always many suitable craft ideas out there. Don't worry about picking the wrong one! If you've taken into consideration the age and skill levels of the kids involved, your choice will be adequate.

Next, consider your budget. When choosing a craft idea for kid programs, you need to be aware that some of them are expensive. Prepackaged kits to make a fun foam picture frame or a craft stick cross are affordable for a few kids, but if you are needing to do a craft with a lot of kids, these kits might cost too much. It's often easy to do almost exactly the same project by just looking at the craft kit components and buying the same materials in bulk at the discount store. You may have to do some preparation, like cutting out shapes ahead of time, or at least making cardboard patterns for the kids to use in cutting out their own. The savings will be worth it, however.

Another consideration is this: in spite of years of indoctrination from women's libbers, the fact remains that boys and girls like different sorts of crafts! If the craft seems a little girly, don't use it at boys' camp. Stick with lace-up leather billfolds, Indian artifacts, dinosaur art, and similar projects. Girls will like beads and anything that's pink or purple. For a craft idea for kid camp where there are kids of both sexes, keep it on the boyish side and provide some pink materials to keep the girls happy.

An aspect of creativity that the non-creative types don't realize is that ideas spring from other ideas. That is, if you look over a book or website of craft ideas, maybe none of them will appeal to you, but if you let them, they will spark an idea for a similar project. Use what you can and change what you must in the craft directions. For instance, the craft may have a slogan to be written across the front. If you need to change the slogan to fit your own needs, it's perfectly OK. For instance, the pictured project might say "Girls rock!" You can change that to "He is the Rock!" if that meets your VBS needs better.

A final suggestion is to realize that you don't have to change the instructions or create something new to have a good craft idea for kid use. Feel free to follow the instructions to the letter if that works better for you. The kids will have a great time either way. Just pick a craft idea, for kid creativity beats adult creativity everytime! The kids will make it creative, even if you have doubts about your own ability in this area.

Learning To Use The Tremolo with Guitar Backing Tracks

By Eugene W

Life couldn't be easier than this: You get guitar backing tracks for almost all the top rock, metal, blues and progressive music tracks. All you need to do is learn to focus and learn to play along with the guitar backing tracks. The guitar backing tracks are essential for practice because you can play just about anything or any type of lead. You can even conjure your own piece of work.

>For example: if you have guitar backing tracks for the Blood and tears by Steve Vai then you don't have to necessarily play the same lead that Vai has played. You can use all the different advanced guitar techniques using the tremolo and do your original stuff. It's much more fun that way.

The tremolo technique for playing the lead guitar comes in handy especially when you are practicing for a live gig. Of course the guitar backing tracks have to be there but then you need to understand how to play around with the tremolo. While playing a tremolo all you have to do is play the string with an up and down motion with the help of your pick. It is something that was made famous by the legendary guitarist Pete Townshend.

You can use a tremolo on guitar backing tracks at very high speeds as well as slow speeds. More often than not, a tremolo is played rapidly. If this is your first time then all you need to do is get the right guitar backing tracks and start playing the tremolo at a slow speed and then move a step ahead and try to play it faster. The stronger your grip on the tremolo, the faster you should play it. The truth is that there is no fun playing the tremolo slow. Here is a tip: try to play thin picks on the tremolos as they are easier to play. Here is an example of a basic tremolo track:

Always remember that when you are playing the tremolo with guitar backing tracks, you need to pick down on whatever string you are playing and then immediately pick up that particular string. It should never be two motions - it should always look like just one motion. Here is another example of a simple tremolo that you can practice with guitar backing tracks:

Paper Crafts: Scrapbook and Greeting Card Basics

By Charles and Kim Petty

Paper crafts are a popular pastime right now. Scrapbooking is a fun way to display pictures and chronicle family history. Other paper crafts include making greeting cards and even making hand made papers.

When getting started at paper crafts, it is easy to spend a lot of money! Go easy at first until you know what sort of paper craft products you are likely to use. For instance, you may find that you love using stickers in scrapbooks, but rarely use your rubber stamps. If this is the case, you would be better off spending more on stickers and less on rubber stamps for your paper crafts.

Almost everyone has at least some of their photographs stored somewhere in a shoe box. Scrapbooks are a great way to get those photos out where people can enjoy them. You will need a loose leaf binder, some plastic page protectors, and some colored cardstock for starters. Many paper crafts experts insist on only archival quality materials. Check the labels as you buy. Most paper products, even the cheaper ones, are labeled "acid-free," which means that it shouldn't fade or otherwise deteriorate if stored for a long time. Sunlight will bleach almost anything, but your paper crafts should not be out in the sunlight very often.

To start a scrapbook you have several options. You can select photos that all relate to one event, such as a trip or a child's participation in sports. This type of scrapbook will be short, but can be designed around a theme. This is a good choice if your photos are not in a jumble. If they are, then you may wish to choose 3 or 4 photos around a general theme, and change the theme for each page. You may want to include some 2 page spreads in your scrapbook.

Attach your photos to the cardstock with double-sided tape squares or a gluestick. Then it's time to decorate the page with stickers, paper shapes, or rubber stamped designs. In addition, you can use a colored gel pen to write dates, names, and other highlights about the activities in the pictures.

Other items are available in paper crafts stores. These includes die cuts, which are pieces of paper already cut into shapes and objects. There are also special scissors that cut paper with an interesting edge. A pair of the type called "deckle" scissors is very useful for making elegant looking scrapbook pages, greeting cards, and other paper crafts. If you also have an old pair of pinking shears that are too dull to cut fabric, you can use those for cutting out shapes and photos.

Many paper crafts enthusiasts begin with scrapbooking, but then branch out to making their own greeting cards. Greeting cards may or may not have an original poem written on the inside. A simple "Happy Birthday," "Get Well Soon," or even just "Hi!" is enough to brighten someone's day, so don't worry about not being a good enough writer to make your own greeting cards. Rubber stamps often make beautiful greeting cards. You can even attach small ribbons, beads, and other items to hand made cards. A handmade card is sure to please anyone, whether they are interested in paper crafts or not.

Pin Collecting: A Friendly Obsession

By Charles and Kim Petty

Pins are a hot collectible that offer an added advantage over other collections - they are small and do not take up much room. Pins are available in many motifs and themes. Some of the most collectible themes are Disney characters, sports teams, and Hard Rock Cafe. The first rule of pin collecting is to specialize. If you like the San Diego Padres baseball team, for instance, you can start pin collecting with souvenir pins that celebrate this team. And just because these themes are popular doesn't mean you have to collect them. Be original and collect what you like.

Many pins are centered around modern entertainments, but many pin collecting enthusiasts collect campaign pins from election campaigns. Buttons are a similar item and are collected by many of the same people who do pin collecting. Pins created to advertise businesses and services are also very collectible.

To display pins you have several options. When you wear a jacket with lapels, you can wear a few of your favorite small pins. The same goes for wearing a cowboy hat or a vest. Many pin collectors wear a few on the front of a cowboy hat. Tote bags, purses, and fanny packs are another place where some pins can be displayed.

Of course, as you get into pin collecting, you will soon find that you have too many to wear the entire collection at one time. A bulletin board, perhaps covered with a plain piece of fabric, like dark blue velvet, makes a nice backdrop for a pin collection. The pins can either be pinned into the cork of the bulletin board through the velvet or attached to the velvet first.

Another way to display and store pins is in a notebook. This method works well if you wish to take some of your pins to an event where you can do some trading with other pin collectors. To make the notebook, purchase sheets of hard felt or craft foam. Either punch holes in the side so they fit into a looseleaf binder, or slip the pages into page protectors after attaching the pins to the pages. The type of looseleaf binder that zips closed is the best to use for pin collecting.

Sometimes pins get scratched, especially if they are stored in a notebook arrangement such that they hit each other. The scratches can be smoothed over with a tiny bit of liquid car wax. Future scratching can be avoided by using page protectors in notebook collections.

Pin collecting is a very popular hobby. You can find groups of likeminded people with which to trade pins, making pin collecting a hobby that helps people make friends.

For Recreation, Sports Collecting is a Great Hobby

By Charles and Kim Petty

In this fast-paced, stressful age we live in, everyone needs a little recreation. Sports collecting is a hobby that can fill your spare minutes with interest and offer a diversion to the everyday grind. Sports collecting takes many forms depending on the person who is pursuing the hobby. Many people choose to collect memorabilia from their favorite professional teams, but others collect items related to golf, fishing, and other recreation sports. Collecting requires a certain amount of space, but collectors are creative about finding ways to display their collectibles.

If you have a favorite pro team or two there are many items you can collect related to those teams. For instance, you can create scrapbooks in which you save clippings about exciting games, favorite players, and special interviews. You can keep ticket stubs and photographs in your scrapbook, too. Other items, however, won't fit into a scrapbook, such as a game ball, team jersey, or a team's annual yearbook. These items will need other storage. There are stands for special balls, and jerseys look great hanging on a hanger on the wall.

You might like to collect souvenir items from all types of sports. Most professional teams sell small metal pins with their insignia on them. Pin collecting is a widely practiced hobby, and sports teams are one of the hottest types of collectible pins, as are those commemorating the Olympics. Another option for sports collecting is to collect antique sports equipment. Vintage baseball gloves are an example of this type of collectible.

Baseball cards have long been a source of recreation. Sports collecting enthusiasts have collected baseball cards, football cards, and basketball cards for many years, although baseball cards were the first. This is such a popular hobby that some cards are worth a lot of money, such as a rookie card of a player like Willie Mays.

Other collectors like to accumulate things that illustrate their favorite recreation sports. Collecting items decorated with fish, horses, or golfers are examples of these types of collections. For instance, if you enjoy hunting with dogs, you can decorate your home in a hunting dog theme. There are throw pillows printed with handsome hunting dogs, as well as with the game they help you find. You may find lamps that have a hunting dog as the base. You can even have curtains made from hunting dog printed material! The same can be done around the theme of golf, horseback riding, whether western or eastern, bass fishing, sailboats, and other popular recreation sports. Collecting is a hobby that offers many options!

Wedding Crafts, Ideas for Saving Money

By Charles and Kim Petty

Weddings are a joyous occasion but can get expensive in a hurry. With wedding crafts you can insert a personal touch and hold the price down as well. Here are a few ideas for wedding crafts to add sparkle and creativity to your big day.

It is not that hard to create your own wedding veil. To make this wedding craft, you will need a length of bridal illusion in the desired length. You will also need a comb to attach it to your hair and a hat or headpiece to cover the comb. Sew large running stitches about an inch from the end of the illusion and gather it tightly. Now sew the veil to the comb. Top with hat or headpiece. As an alternative, you can decorate a wide-brimmed straw hat with silk flowers, ribbon, and pearls.

The bouquets and floral arrangements can also be personally crafted. For a simple outdoor wedding, consider wild flowers. They are free and have a charm all their own. Bouquets can be arranged in large clear vases, with a bow tied elegantly around.

Favors for the guests are particularly appropriate wedding crafts. Refrigerator magnets are a simple and well-received favor. A really nice idea is to make a magnetic picture frame and include a picture of the couple. You could cut a frame out of craft foam in one of the wedding colors, arrange over the photo, and glue all onto a cardboard backing. Place self-adhesive magnet tape on the back of the cardboard. Decorate the front of the frame with foil heart stickers and a monogram of the couple's last name.

Bows for the ends of the pews or rows make simple wedding crafts. Wide velvet ribbons are nice for fall and winter weddings, while satin is more appropriate for spring and summer weddings. Loop some flat lace in with the ribbons. In the center of the completed bow, attach some silk flowers and pearl sprays with a hot glue gun.

Perhaps you'd like to try your hand at decorating your own cake. Check the craft section of the department store for pans and gadgets of all types to help you create a cake to remember. Do remember, though, that it takes a steady hand. Be sure to practice before starting on the real cake.

Preparing for a wedding can be expensive, but with wedding crafts, you can take some of the sting out. Plan early, however, because it will take a little while to make favors for everyone and all the other little details you will want to take care of. Maybe creating wedding crafts will even relieve some of those wedding jitters. In any event, crafting your own wedding items is a way to have a personal, beautiful, and less expensive wedding.

An Educational Past Time: Stamp Collecting

By Charles and Kim Petty

Stamp collecting, also known as philately, is a popular and educational past time. Stamp collectors save stamps from letters, especially those from other countries. They also search out old stamps that represent a past time. Stamp enthusiasts can be found everywhere. Their notebooks and glassine envelopes filled with stamps are fascinating to look through. Many of the stamps they collect are very valuable as well.

Materials needed for starting a stamp collection include a stamp album and special mounting tapes called hinges. Tools you will find useful are a pair of small tongs or tweezers for carefully lifting delicate old stamps and a magnifying glass for finding minute details. The beginning philatelist can start with the stamps on the mail that arrives this very day. To remove a stamp from an envelope, carefully tear away
